Cool Frank i`ve noticed a big difference in my birds weight very buoyant just feeding once a day 18 birds 500 grms about a pound of wheat ! and once a week a racing mix.
Hi frank First of all, after 3 years of trying to beat my friend who flies 6 miles shorter I finally beat him by 2 minutes. That’s 8 minutes in total. I was using your system. The confusing part is that I’ve seen couple of your videos that shows different way of feeding. The system I used was 100% barley all week and Friday basketing I fed race mix and fats. But I’ve noticed that Quintero has put a video up of your system with 80% barley and 20% race mix with 100% barley on rest days . But after watching this your feeding depurative all week and race mix on basketing. Last week I fed 80% barley and 20% race mix all week and 100% race mix and fats on basketing. We raced 163 miles and velocity was 1396 , we don’t live on the racing line but fantastic results.
Congratulations on great results and you are now seeing the speed pigeons with proper body weight can fly. Fat pigeons are slow pigeons. Your system is close to what I do and will certainly work for short distance. Please email me and I will send you a very simple system to follow. You cannot make a mistake and many around the world dominate feeding like what I will email. Frank@McLaughlinLofts.com

Once you master feeding the racing game becomes easier. Many fanciers never have success and much of the time their pigeons are just too heavy to compete.
Once I started using 80/20 barley and depure mix during weekday my hens eat between 20-25 grams as well. Cocks eat a bit more, around 25-30 grams but I noticed they eat more minerals which is what Frank also mentioned as very important aspect of having healthy and good birds.
Feed like this video for such short races. You will race like crazy. See my video series on feeding for an real education, ruclips.net/p/PLfjpm1Kc9E0UkXcdnfTrnV_VKTkfNozbt
Great video. Any suggestions on a DIY mix to mix with the barley. I have access to most grains but not the commercial mix. Thanks again for the great videos.
Hey John, If you can get Safflower and add 20% safflower to the mix it will be a great feed. You can also use a combination of fat seeds for the 20% like some hemp, safflower, sunflower which is better than maize or milo or even peas.
Very enlightening to see the actual amounts given here. I think the pickpot measurement (basically one per ten birds) gives a good simple baseline explanation. Unfortunately, I doubt if I can get access to the DePure, but it looks like I can come close to simulating it.
You can certainly mix your own and monitor the results. I feed fat seeds for the long distance races the day of shipping and sometimes the day before shipping.
Mr frank I must saw your system works, now I'd add that I get your response regarding young birds in a old bird comment under master feeding and racing. My question is am 3 weeks away just started training how do recommend the training per week, given there on 30 percent barley
Hi Kevin, I suggest training only on the best days and give a day off if the young fly close to an hour. You are trying to educate them without taking too much out of them. Go slow and make sure you build a few rest days in each week. You can get more serious right close to the first race.
That is the measurement for the race team celibate hens for depurative or the barley mix. Remember you cannot feed like this if you work the pigeons hard. My pigeons race, toss on Tuesday and toss on Thursday with no loft flying. They are out of the loft only three times per week. This season, many weeks they flew the race, had one 60 mile toss and raced again.
Thanks for that, correct me if im wrong if i use your system wrong. From now on im from philippines then the truck training start so i change my system to barley mix which is 80% of barley and 20% of racing mix from monday to saturday, but the days of training when they arrive i gave them 50%barley and 50% racing mix. But when its sunday which is long toss (the day of arrive) I gave them pure racing and other fat seed and minerals they want.. Did i use your system right?
I go to the lofts around 9:30 am and feed shortly after that. If they are on a training toss they may eat a bit later. They are not on a strict schedule and work around my schedule.
hi frank its ali from scotland , very interesting and you are right , congrats on your combine win , what area does your combine cover and how many birds were in the race ? i remember one of biggest mistakes i made all those years ago was overfeeding , it messes them up , . i am still trying to find good place to get started , it tough to find coz i cant buy , houses are to expensive , but i am working on ways to do it , i will get some where with big garden as i can , its been 35 years since i had pigeons , i really miss having them . good luck for rest of season , i think we having our first national race next week ,its not channel race ,by that i mean over channel from france which is 500 miles to here , this is races i prefer . though i was really happy to win from 360 miles at a fast velocity and that little chec hen 4 weeks later nearly won from 500 , we had a clock problem , it was given 160 th i think, never forget theses birds ,
Hello Ali, It will be fun when you find the right place to race. Maybe you partner with an existing fancier that does not have time to compete successfully. He may have everything set up. You are lucky to compete in such a competitive part of the world. Years ago I competed against 200 lofts and 3000 birds weekly so I could work on being the best. Now the numbers keep dropping and we may have 60 plus lofts and 600 to 800 birds. On may 507 mile win the members were fearing the headwinds and we only had four clubs ship around 440 birds and under 50 lofts. Sad to see this.
yes frank i am also very sad about this ,.i get information from a local very good fancier , i know there is big problem with losses and hawks, i think a lot of it is to do with money , small man cant compete with that , . i was in midlothian federation , sending 5000 to 8000 each week , when i had to give up , i was hearing lot guys saying they cant afford it . i heard they only sent 3or 400 hundred birds to a national race last year . yes i was thinking same thing about going into partnership , also there maybe someeone who really wants to start but doesnt have the time but has a big property , i have the time and i can build a loft any size no problem , i built many lofts when i was young, if i cant get a place this year ,i will look at other ways , ok take care
Hi Brian, That is a tough one. I suggest not to overfeed on an overnight race. I also suggest two small meals the day of shipping to encourage the pigeons to drink. It is also wise to teach the pigeons to drink on the truck. All trucks should water before liberation. It is worth having a basket like is used on the truck. You can teach your pigeons to eat and drink while in this basket. Setting up a very similar trough so the pigeons are comfortable eating and drinking while in this basket. You can put ten or so young at a time and feed and water in the basket for several days. They will be okay after that.
Hi Rico, Watch my Long distance Feeding Video. ruclips.net/video/Xvol6GUU5TE/видео.html I feed this amount during the week and this past 507 mile race I gave the fat seeds the evening before shipping day and all the fat seeds they wanted the day of shipping. They were predicting headwinds. They went to the race nice and light but had the energy needed and were way in front.
@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons yep, understood. When you say you don't work them much, did I hear right you do a 20 miler and 50 miler in the week? Do they loft fly each day as well?

Do not limit feed for young that are not racing. You can add maybe 30% barley to the feed now and more barley a week before racing starts. Feeding the young once a day all they can eat is best this time of year.
Thanks for the video, really visual and helpfull. A little under 1 ounce per bird per day (0.83 oz). Do you do the same amount for the young birds in racing season?
I do feed young slightly more during racing. They are usually molting flight feathers. It is best to feed the young once a day until they start to leave a little barley.
I never loft fly the pigeons. One to two training tosses per week between races. Anyone that loft flies more than once a day is way over training. Check out this video. ruclips.net/video/wYW1IAtxK_Q/видео.html
Hi Frank Great video once again 👍. My question is if you drop a hen or a hen comes back later than expected do you keep the same amount of feed or do you not top off the feeding can you use. Thanks Eddie

I can keep any late comers inside and feed the rich feed to help them recover without feeding the team the rich feed. I am feeding Depure. I have not been able to get quality Barley. Depure is 12% protein and 6% fat. Good feed between racing. I add fat seeds before shipping long distance races.
I consider long distance over 300 miles. We fly 407 miles which is my first long race. We fly every other week 407, 507, 507 608 miles to end the season.
I do not loft fly the birds. Loft flying takes too much time. They are only out of the loft two to three times per week during the race season and this includes the race.
