I loved my Mooney 20J (201CA)
Bought it in 1979 with 60 hours on it and sold it in 1984. I have been longing for one If I could pass my medical at 71 which is iffy. In any event your video caused me to remember why I got rid of it in the first place. The old adage, “Rich people and fools own airplanes”.
It took me 5 years to figure out I wasn’t a rich people.

I bought my Mooney just about a year ago, I think with avionics upgrades plus a few repairs I spent over 40k, but I'm expecting this year to be much better. It's pretty much squared away now.
The avionics will run that bill up fast!

Daaang I’m surprised more of that stuff wasn’t caught in the prebuy inspection. Put that cost back on the previous owner before you took ownership. Glad you got it squared away!

Soooo… I had one for the panel but the Mount broke and I suck at replacing it. In up coming videos I talk about that issue then have a panel can for my review of my panel upgrade. Thinking about finishing the ppl and getting a highlander stol since I can't pull a yoke with my left arm anymore.
Yes, it seems you hard a tough year with the fuel pump, prop cable, oil leak, new tires, etc. With any luck those costs won't resurface any time soon. Hopefully it'll all be smooth winds from now on. (Btw, Grogu is a totally separate character than Yoda 12:34)
I owned a M20C for a few years and had it hangered. The fixed monthly cost for maint, 1hr flight per month, insurance, etc., it cost about $550, then i charged myself $60 per hr flight for oil changes, fuel, etc. I bought a 1/3 share then bought the other sharse over time.
Sound like a pretty tough year. I would expect the following years to not be so severe. My father flew Mooney’s in the 60’s and least he could write stuff off as a business expense.

To be honest nothing really. She hadn’t been flown a lot when I bought her so when I started putting the hours on, the stuff started breaking. It goes with owning a vintage aircraft. I’m hoping on the maintenance costs side of the house it will be easier this next year, but we know how these things go lol
Grew up and got my PPL in ELP back in 1981. $110 per month for a hanger is crazy good. Don't move to Austin, 1 you cant find a hanger, and if you do it's $400+ per month. Great info, be safe in the desert, thanks for your service and keep the videos coming.

A few decades ago I owned a Piper Apache. Only owned it for 14 months. But I was astounded at how much money it took. The phrase that came to mind was that it was nickel and dime -ing me. Except that instead of nickels and dimes it was $200 and $500. It consumed all my financial reserves so I had to sell it.

Mooney's are Beautiful planes, if you have a six figure income.. For people who are on a budget, a gyro-copter can be one of the best ways to experience flying... I like the ones with tractor props... The FAA/PMA parts you're buying amigo, many of them are similar or even identical to automotive parts... The main difference is one has serious liability insurance protecting the manufacturer, and the other part means if it fails, you'll soon be procurring another one to exchange with the defective one. Obviously, the non certificated aircraft can't fly for hire or go into & out of certain airfields like the store-bought planes can , but few store bought planes have foldable wings that several experimental aircraft have, to enable them to easily be stored inside of a garage, and easily be transported inside of a trailer...
No fixed wing aircraft is doable if it was 25k purchase and then 40k from 2016 to 18 for maint and such to keep it legal, and now 100LL makes 91 octane cars fuel seem cheap. Wait until fall of 25' 100LL will be 9-10/gal and 7/gal for cars.

Even the Used flyable aircraft of various types are going fir a LOT these days, when they have current maintenance and paperwork.... The selling price often depends on the condition and the demand for them... The method of pricing, is actually Not a whole lot different than the classic vehicle market...
The main difference between the classic aircraft, and the classic vehicles, are the legal hoops the new owners often have to deal with and the very important policies & procedures that were, or were not followed on the flying machines.... The differences of the failure results between the aircraft and the ground based vehicles, can quickly become DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT....

As far as the expense of flying is concerned; much of it depends on the TYPE of flying that is sought after... There are several affordable forms of flying, however, it is limited of what can be done to generate earnings for expenses, using non-certificated aircraft...
Usually, the more performance and capabilities the plane has, the more complex and expensive it will be to operate. There are a lot of enthusiasts who simply would like to get-off the ground and experience flying, for fun...
Not try to go really fast or really high, just fly for fun, and safely return to the ground. I feel those people often get the most out of this sport...

The amount of that cost, can greatly depend on what type of an aircraft that was selected to be purchased... I have known people who have been involved in personal ownership of an aircraft, that they have managed to fly routinely... I have also known of other people who have initially purchased aircraft that they quickly found cost more than what they could afford, and underestimated the skill level, knowledge, specific training, tool / work area access and proper certification of bringing it back into servicable condition...
The key to doing that type of thing properly, is to start with something as simple and inexpensive as possible... Then carefully check each component for proper operation... Never make time schedules to complete it a priority... Quality and safety, has to be the highest priority...

I bought 2 because I’m not the smartest person in the world. They are old but they are also cheap and still work. I have future plans for the stack but that will be down the road so I wanted a radio to work since both of my coms were a half solution at the time at best

About half of that was the cost of the oil. Stuff isn’t cheap. I do my own when I have the time but life likes to get in the way

This is a story about owning an old plane...Anyone of these items could have killed you...its true aviation is safe but everything has its limit...
True, but much of what you're saying applies to fast planes with fairly low glide ratios and high stall speeds... These fast planes are nice, but getting to far away places using commercial airliners and rental cars seems to be a lot le$$ expen$ive , and fewer headaches involved with them. The car rental companies and airlines can pay the bills to operate their planes... And they're about 3x faster than planes like these and can often fly above bad weather quite easily... Safer, because of that alone...
Airplanes aren't cheap, but they are MUCH CHEAPER than having KIDS. Guess which one I happily choose. Not kids!

Yeah, you got it easy , like one guy said below. You do not really need a hangar in the desert, not for a all metal bird, just have to protect the plexi glass. You fly Apaches? Tell us how much per 100 hour that one cost?? My guess is in 6 digit figures. I am one of those who did not buy the BS from the press about the 40% out of service rate. Desert Storm proved me right.

No reason to have hands on yoke unless configured for winds. Steering and braking are both in the pedals.
