Even after 14 years, the sting of Legends 3 being canned hasn't completely gone away. I still remember buying a 3DS specifically for that game only to hear about the project and demo being cancelled like a month later. And in some sick divine prank, it happened right after Ocarina of Time 3D came out too. Twice in a row did the Legends series get unintentionally screwed over by the Hero of Time.

      Thrice.
Between OOT in 1998 and the 2011 3DS remake, Legends 2 competed neck-n-neck with Majora's Mask in 2000. In fact, both games out just days of each other in Japan and the US.

      Majora's Mask
      JP April 27, 2000

Is the US PS2 launch didn't do L2 in that week, the second N64 Zelda did.

And the way the Legends series was so consistently screwed by the Zelda series stings even more considering that I loved the Legends series far more than any other Mega Man entries BECAUSE it had the same appeal as Zelda games. A single interconnected world to explore, interact with, and backtrack through as you got more stuff, rather than completely disconnected levels to just travel straight through and never see again. That's always been my gaming happy place and always will be. Why must Zeldas destroy other Zeldas?
Now that being said, the Legends games weren't as overall good as Zeldas, and certainly offered less ways to interact with the world, but darn it, they were doing their best and I'm sure they could have eventually matched Zelda games in overall quality if given the chance. Okami did, after all, and that was a Capcom game as well. They could have done so with Legends too if it had just continued.
And yeah, for the record, I remember that Legends 2 broke the game world up into separate disconnected areas. It was, unfortunately, one of those sequels that both took steps forward and steps backward. The cutscenes were also less good due to not doing that thing the first game did where they drew custom mouth textures specific to the exact poses, angles, and backgrounds of individual shots.

    • @hedgehoundable
      @hedgehoundable 5 месяцев назад +2

@@Alloveck Actually, I always felt the Legend series had more of a Metroid feel to it. Especially with how you can explore ruins deeper and deeper once you get new parts to make weapons, sometimes from just exploring cracked walls and other times from defeating bosses.
It's for that reason, I am especially sad that no one has been able to use that style up until now to make a Metroidvania game. It almost feels like a prototype of an inbetween game of Super Metroid and Metroid Prime.

It's stunning how well this game's artstyle aged. Still ravaged by the sheer clunkiness of early 90's graphics, but it's stylized in just the right amount of simplicity, and it kinda looks like a really low-budget anime...

I agree, the controls for the first game certainly haven't aged well, but its graphics show that stylized graphics over realistic ones are better at standing the test of time. Heck, its style is so charming for me that anything that even remotely looks like it makes me smile.

The fact that Legends came out BEFORE Ocarina (never thought to look this up) makes the game even MORE impressive, IMO. As a kid playing the game for the first time, it was easy to get the impression it was just Capcom's attempt to mimic and iterate upon the success other studios like Nintendo already struck in the 3D space. But this characterization that Legends was experimenting with 3D language before anyone even invented the vocabulary is... sublime. In that light, the game's ambitiousness and the degree to which it holds up even to this day are just downright impressive. I wholeheartedly agree - Mega Man Legends was a massive diamond in the rough, a package that not only dared to be such a unique departure from the norm but managed to succeed so well at it, and its absence leaves a huge feeling of lost potential for what could have been.

The bad news: there probably won't be one. Due to spin-offs generally being excluded (so no MoTB), a Legacy Collection having only two games (whereas the others have 4 at an absolute minimum) would be tough for Capcom to justify.
The good news: that said, if Capcom wants to revisit the Legends series, it'll likely be in the form of full-blown remakes. The Legends games brought up to modern standards? You son of a bitch, I'm in.

And I'm still a little salty about Capcom blaming us for not supporting it even though they never released anything for us to buy. The problem was that they picked the 3DS as the only platform, then the 3DS released and was tanking due to a high price and no games, so Capcom pulled out instead of pivoting to other platforms. Same stupid mistake they made by making Mega Man Powered Up and Mega Man Maverick Hunter X for PSP only. Xbox Live Arcade and PSN were right there, they could have sold a lot better with ports. Legends 3 also could have been a smaller download only title for consoles. But nooooo, Capcom has to go handheld exclusive on handhelds that (at the time) are selling poorly.
I don't even think Keiji Inafune leaving had anything to do with it. Even if he was still there, the higher ups would have pulled the plug anyway.

(It bitterly now makes me wonder how much better both games would have fared on the Switch even with that system's own issues as a portable system.)

I remember randomly finding it for sale and getting it back in the day based on the Megaman name alone. It ended with me loving it and playing it through many times. Such a shame it all went down the way it did.

Loved the vid! Mega Man Legends was an all time favorite of mine growing up. Played it over and over again. I didn't realize just how much I still harbored a deep hurt that Legends 3 never came out until I literally had to stifle the urge to shed a single tear of disappointment when you brought it up in your video. Excellent content, can't wait to see what else you cover!
Oh, and get Mega Man off the moon!

When I was a kid, a friend let me borrow his PS1 and games, in some kind of "the consoles we hadn't played" summer trade, and I played a little of everything he had. MGS, MediEvil, Wipeout, the RE trilogy as it stood at the time. But the prize of his collection, which he almost didn't let me borrow at all, was MM Legends 1, 2, and Misadventures of Tron Bonne. And as much as I enjoyed the back catalogue, MM was looming the whole time. I'd played plenty of MMX and a little MM classic, but Legends was spoken of in a weird kind of reverence by a kid who really seemed far more of a Resident Evil fan than... whatever the cartoony thing he didn't want to part with was. So with like, a month left on our trade, I finally popped it in. And I was in love with it. 1 had rough edges, but nothing so bad that the charm of the game didn't carry me through, and 2 was so good I couldn't believe it. Tron Bonne instantly cemented itself as an alltime favorite, and they did this all on the strength of being a light action game version of a type of cartoon I didn't even like, and still don't to this day.
It cannot be understated just how enormously charismatic these sedate and whimsical cartoon games are. Once they got the actual gameplay on par, and centered in on the most charming aspects of the whole presentation, it was just over for anything else I'd played that summer. The Mega Man Legends trio was my game of the year in 2001. Probably the only way I'd ever buy a console again is if MML3 was on it, and not on PC. I've revisited them since and they hold up to my nostalgia just as well. Whether it was properly Mega Man or not, these were solid games with a solid identity, and I wish they'd carried on making them. It almost hurts when other capcom games make references to them, because it's like they know Legends deserves the love, but they'll never quite get around to giving Legends the full treatment. I'll always have the memories, but I could probably have done with some closure.

Casually checking Second Wind's library of other content outside of Fully Ramble, and I swear - I've never clicked so fast on a video just based on the thumbnail before....
MML was my first ever PS1 game and I was always blown away at how the voice acting was so amazing and the world was so expansive, especially if you explored beyond the main storyline!

I was so incredibly hyped when Legends 3 was announced, and so incredibly heartbroken when I heard it got cancelled. This series was truly great and just thinking about Megaman Volnutt being cliffhangered up on the moon indefinitely brings a tear to my eye.
Also, absolutely here 1000% for a Marty series.

I dont even need to watch to know this is a given. Geez with the popularity of souls and AC6 this should be a no brainer for capcom. There is a huge market for fiddly weapon swaping exploration rpgs and even mission based versions.
I watched a full playthrough on my downtime when on business travel of 1 and 2.

Yeah open world shooter with puzzles is easily portable to the modern era of games. A "gun" that fires whatever the story needs and multiple armors types being amicable to DLC work should be a layup

Amazing production quality here! Some weird frame pacing issues a bit into the beginning, but otherwise was an excellent video. I think you did Legends a pretty solid service while keeping the video an appetizing length.
It's been charming to see the Legends aesthetic be revived in newer indie games. I just hope there's one that really captures the same sense of *adventure* someday, too.

I am crossing my fingers Capcom will release a Legends collection for current gen console! They’ve basically release almost every other Mega Man game into a collection bundle but now only Legends is missing the same treatment!
Till this day I hope Capcom might reconsider and give us Legends 3. Come on CAPCOM you can’t leave that story on a cliffhanger!!!
I’ve played just about every single Mega Man game. Throughout the years and yet somehow Legends still remains as my all time fav! It was unique, it was daring, it was fun etc.
I had fun exploring Kattlelox Island and the multiple islands you explore in Legends 2.
The voice acting was top tier in this franchise and considering the fact this was developed in the early Y2K’s when video game voice acting wasn’t considered main stream or as a serious job. Yet somehow every voice actor made the characters iconic.
I still replay Legends 1 & 2 along with the Misadventures of Tron Bonne every once a year.
This game after 21 years still holds the charm and magic. I never get tired or bored after all these years!
It deserves more love and attention and what better way to do it than to release a Legends bundle collection on current gen!
Old and forgotten PS1 games are being ported to current gen! Another of my favorite games such as Tomba got the same treatment in August of 2024!
So who is to say Legends can’t? It’s not impossible, you just gotta have faith!
    💙💙💙💙💙💙

I'm one of the largest mega man legends fans under the sun, I'm in the middle of creating an indie game that's inspired by it.
while I'm working within my limitations & it's a 2d rpg, I just miss the style & the heart. the exploration & the adventure. it's not the greatest game, but it could have been amazing in better hands. the legends story in spirit belongs to it's fans now. I hope everyday for a remake, but I gotta push forward with my ambitions to fill that hole in my heart.

Great video. Can't wait for more of this series in the future. Mega Man Legends is definitely an underrated classic and really sad it came out before 3D was fully baked. I am very much of the opinion that most early 3D suffered from growing pains and rushing to hit that next gen graphics started from there, which has been a plague on the industry.

These two games were such important gems. BTW, "gate crasher" is a perfect capturing of legends epic vibe. All the songs are great earworms. But the title menu music and the final gate music from the first games are certified bangers.
