98 was the first one I ever played. And I've never played 97. I have heard that it was better though. I was a staunch Ferrari supporter back then and would purposely push the Mclarens off the track. It was a HELLUVA season though.
They were offered the game engine by Bizarre Creations but Visual Sciences refused as they wanted to make their own game.... well, certainly was a bad move given they would have sold a lot, if they had taken the game code and implemented their own ideas to it... shame. We could of had a full classification in the pits, better commentary, after each race showing the classification of retirements but hey-ho it's what if's now :D Still F1 '97
Even if it is on the worst f1 games its my favourite f1 game along with the n64 world grand Prix ones but i prefer this more because of Murray's commentary lol
It's such a shame that Scottish (now defunct) game developers Visual Sciences didn't take the engine code that Bizarre Creations offered them but they refused. It would have been a better game all round and given they had just 10 months to complete it in back in 1998... it would of made things easier on the development side. Despite this, it's not the worst ever F1 game made, as you can get to grips with the handling when trying different car set-ups. Like others have said F1 '97 was the best one ever made... probably up until F1 Championship Edition back in 2006 on PS2/PS3. The original F1 game based on 1995 is also fun, still own like F1 '97 :) . It also shows how development was on this game as it has Jos Verstappen in it instead of Jan Magnussen for Stewart-Ford. The game menu's are really great though in F1 '98 despite it's issues with game-play/commentary.
Remember getting a PS1 for xmas in 1998, got this game along with Ridge Racer Revolution I think it was oh and Tekken. Loved the other two games, really reallly tried to like this one..... it was shit! :( looked like the track was rotating instead of the cars actually moving around the track. The commentary was repetitive, graphics were shocking even for 1998 standards and when you spun off the track the gravel was like drowning at sea! could barely move so if you was leading you'd be down to 22nd within a few seconds. Sounds like they could get the licence to say 'Villenueve' and would just say "the former world champion" same with I believe Tarso Marques in the Minardi was just "Minardi". Total shambles! I got F1 97 in the end and played that one to death instead. Ive read the stories about it and it seems the people who made it were short on time scale so rush released it which explains why its so painfully dull.
And the main menu music but yeah agree with u on that for Geoff Crammond, at least there was an alternative, its a shame we had to wait 2 years later for that
joseph willows yeah i was bitterly disappointed with f1 98 after the brilliant f1 97. For me once Psygnosis left the series it never really recovered. I am however a big fan of the current codemasters series. playing that then going back shows 1. how good the Geoff Crammon games were and 2. how forgivubg as a youngster I was.
Formula 1 1995 by Psygnosis was sensational. It not only appeased to motor racing fans it was so good it broke down barriers to even those who’d never watched an F1 GP. Formula 1 1997 also by Psygnosis was a small step backwards because it wasn’t as thorough with the 97 season because they rushed the game so it could be on the market before the 1997 season was over. The gameplay was only slightly inferior to 1995 but they didn’t even have Villeneuve’s name rights as the reigning champ. Nevertheless still very good. Then Formula 1 1998 came along. It was such a step backwards which was a huge surprise. I can only presume Psygnosis got lazy due to the success of the previous two games, particularly 1995. The 1998 version was a flop and the F1 games have never since recovered to reach the dizzy heights of the 1995 version. I don’t see it happening anytime soon either based on Formula 1 2017 by codemasters.
Psgnosis didn't do F1 98, they stopped after 97. Visual Studios were brought in and therefore re-wrote the whole game from the ground up but in a rushed period to appease the release date. I thought F1-97 had better gameplay than f1(95), the collision detection for example was far better. in F1(95) you scraped a barrier and came to a standstill for example in F1(95). Reference the Villeneuve issue, Villeneuve owned his own image rights and could therefore charge what he wanted. Because of the car crash of F1-98, Studio 33 were brought in for F1 99 which was better but not a patch on the 2 originals. As a side note, EA F1 2000 got pretty close to a good handling model for this era of F1 game.
Psygnosis are featured on this game. Watch the loading screens in the video, lol. I wish they hadn’t made it because they tarnished their otherwise spectacular record for F1 games.
F1 and F1 97 were developed by Bizarre Creations. They went on to do new things after doing F1 97 (notably, Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast) and so Psygnosis chose Visual Sciences to develop F1 98. They wanted to re-write the game from scratch and do it all their own way and I can only assume they simply didn't have the time to get it right by the release date. F1 98 shows a lot of potential but, sadly, it doesn't quite live up to it. Definitely a step back on the two Bizarre Creations titles that came before it.
I feel this game is nowhere near as good as the game that came before it. Formula 1 that released the previous year was better. The only thing this game has over 97, is the tracks are more accurate . Monaco and game entirely may play better in 97, but 98 got the track layout right with inferior gameplay.
I remember playing this for sixteen hours straight because I didn't have a memory card.
what got me was how bad this was compared to the previous 2 versions. F1 '97 I absolutely loved

as a Jordan GP fan and a Damon Hill fan, 98 was mega
Bitten & Hisses :D
Beautiful Livery!
this game was a step backwards. the first 2 games were better then they changed the entire game engine and screwed it.
i agree completely. when you consider what geoff crammond was doing with the grand prix series, this was a complete failure from top to bottom.

I love the menu system in setting up an gp race. you don't see that anymore.
02:28 LOL
Rainy summer days in 98... Such nostalgia!
Gerard Green89 the game was only released in late October 1998, lol.
Darren Moynagh must of been 99 then lol! Memory is an unreliable thing
in memory 😫😫😫
It's a yoke! A yoke!
Love the first part of F1 98 cool
日本で発売されなかったのは残念だ。
Love the Menu Song

this game was absolutely terrible. But i loved it becuase i was so young and when you 7-8 years old you don't really care about realism or anything.
This video was featured on WTF1
was it? no one asked
stephen hayes check out their top 5 worse F1 games
joseph willows its a pity the intro is the best thing about this game. Geoff Crammonds GP3 is tge best game for the 98 season
And the main menu music but yeah agree with u on that for Geoff Crammond, at least there was an alternative, its a shame we had to wait 2 years later for that

as the releasing studio yes, but it was sub-contracted to visual studios
