Always great to hear Mike Wilner's take on anything baseball or Blue Jays. I wonder what he thinks of Rogers Sportsnet (his former employer) axing Jays' radio man Ben Wagner. I'll have to check out his podcast. I've just subbed this channel.

As a lifelong Dodger fan, I'm ecstatic to have shohei ohtani join the big blue Wrecking Crew. But honestly, if he did sign in Toronto, it would have been great for baseball also. Toronto is a world-class city. It would have been great for the city and that whole nation of Canada.

As a Southern Californian (who has spent most of his life residing at the beach), 5 years in British Columbia, and now in Japan till about mid-2026 before returning home to SoCal, I have been telling my friends in LA for the past 2 years that Shohei was destined for the Dodgers - it just made the most sense. One of those friends has been a life-long LA fan like me, but was somewhat of a worry-wort. I made a $100 bet with him that Shohei would sign with the Dodgers after his time with the Angels. Given it was one team versus all the others, my friend took that bet based on the odds.
Geography and location is a critical consideration (especially for Japanese, and becomes even more so when moving to a foreign country). SoCal has the most significant Japanese American and Japanese Expat population (especially due to Japanese Corporations), with the highest cultural presence in all of continental North America. This helps to alleviate any possible homesickness or feeling of isolation. But being on a team that can effectively compete for the World Series was probably the next most important aspect to consider.
So I was very surprised when one of my LA Dodger friends emailed me that Shohei was heading to Toronto and said that it was time to pay off our wager. I wrote back to him that it's not over until the contract is accepted and signed. I love my Canadian friends and the country. It is so much more civil and safer than America. Weather wise, Toronto is about the same as most of Japan - cold in the winter (just a little more) and humidly hot in the summer with those blasted mosquitos. But it is not Southern California.
Well, when the news finally broke that Ohtani would be wearing Dodger Blue, my friend immediately emailed me to ask the best way to pay off his bet since I was in Japan. He also asked about Yamamoto. I told him that if anything, Shohei signing with LA, and giving the salary deferrals to later years in the contract, just made the Dodgers more appealing for Yamamoto to also be joining the team for the most important reasons previously cited. Plus, he would be able to be a teammate with someone else from Japan.

As I mentioned in the original comment, my friend just emailed me and said he was glad that he didn't make another bet with me about Yamamoto signing with the Dodgers. One thing that impresses Japanese a lot is geography/location (it's easy to see this living in Japan). This was an immensely significant advantage that only the Dodgers possess - namely being in Los Angeles. Besides having what I consider to be the best weather in the continental US, it will be the best choice for alleviating any homesickness that may affect Yamamoto. And of course, Ohtani will also be on the team. I'm sure Yamamoto considered "everything", and thought the process out carefully. It was the best choice for him to make. As a lifelong Dodger fan, I'm thoroughly delighted.

Just a note to say I submit that Mike Wilner is genius. The guy could be curing cancer and solving problems in the Middle-East, but here he is whispering sweet nothings in our ears about baseball. Anyone who heard him host a post-game radio show called Jays Talk will attest that it was by far the most informative and laugh-out-loud funny sports commentary show on the air. Then Rogers decided to let him go, for reasons unknown. Rogers are really good at making money, but they're tone-deaf when it comes to appreciating art. I think Philistine in the proper word to describe Rogers. P.S. Now that I'm on a rant, a statue of the late Ted Rogers stands outside the Skydome! No Jose Bautista Bat Flip; no Joe Carter World Series winning home run. No, we have a weasel immortalized in front of Skydome. This is the same guy who laughed in everyone's faces when bragging about purchasing Skydome on the cheap.

Ok sure it may not snow in Toronto in the summer obviously. But it DOES snow eventually. Shohei doesn’t like the cold so imagine winter for him in Toronto. He’d hate it. I think it’s a contributing factor for him choosing to stay in LA. He’s also mentioned he’d prefer to stay in the west coast so that he could be closer to home (Japan) not to mention in an interview when he signed with the Angels he said he’d want to win a championship by 26. He’s 29 about to be 30. So again, he chose a team (Dodgers) that could make that a reality.

I think you are all missing the point here and that is, it doesn't matter which players are on the Blue Jays team or which players they had the potential to get or missed out on. The point is the Blue Jays front office as well as the coaching staff have no clue on how to use the players they have and they have no idea on how to help bring success to this team. I guarantee you that the Blue Jays staff would have screwed up Shohei Ohtani's ability to be successful with this team like they did with our starting pitchers this last season. The Blue Jays had one of the best starting pitching line up in the league and their coaching and front office staff did not allow them to play to their full potential.

Yes, we'll said! As they say, "You can't fire the team!" Although Shatkins have tried. I think Schneider is handicapping the team as a whole. I think the Jays could have won 100 games last season without him.

I certainly will never forget my 38th birthday with all the shenanigans that transpired on Twitter on Friday. Sure, it sucks thinking that the Blue Jays seemed to be on the verge of completing probably the biggest task in not just Toronto sports history, but quite possibly Canadian sports history (With Gretzky's 50 goals in 39 games and Olympic gold medals in multiple sports in thought). Yeah, having 1-4 lineup of Springer, Ohtani, Vladdy and Bo would be lovely to have and even if they had the same deferral structure. But, if you're wanting to have money available for Bo and Vladdy, then it's there. The trade market is probably their best bet to fill most of the holes. Chapman would be nice to have back. He's more than solid at 3B, but his bat needs to be more impactful.

I don't know about going to Canada as being "bad" or even Canada being primitive. I think it's because as big and populus as Canada is, there's only 1 MLB baseball team. Not to mention just 1 basketball team. Basketball and baseball just aren't popular in Canada. Montreal losing the Expos is another example. I think the perception from Americans is Canadians don't love our sports as much as their sport Hockey.

Toronto is gorgeous and modern, one thing is Jays rating doesn’t count towards MLB rating and profitability and their brand value is behind their professional hockey teams, their farm isn’t consistently deep and ppl forget Dodgers were the first to scout Ohtani w/ an extensive history.
