  • I read that there were Golden Trout in Treasure Lakes #1 and #2 so I figured I'd hike up there and see for myself.

    thanks, Amani, for all the videos! Being down in Mexico for most of the last 5 years, it has been nearly 4 years since my last trout fishing trip and watching your videos, well, I am like a dog watching a steak cooking! I couldn't take it anymore! Finally, I am scheduled to fly back to Nor Cal on Sept. 3 and already set for a 2-day trip to the Truckee. I am pretty excited to get back there. I hope I can make another trip to the Carson or maybe East Walker before I head back south.

      That's awesome. I hope you get into some good action when you come. If you can afford it, get a guide to float you down the river. West Walker is good too. I have a feeling just being in the mountains again will be a great feeling for you.

      Hike is totally worth it for that action. Real fun day. Until it started pouring rain at around 2pm and I had to hike out for the first hour in the downpour! Oh well, this summer rain has the creeks flowing and the fishing in the Fall should be better because of it.

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 года назад

      Man, if I lived in bishop I'd be tearing that place apart! There is a really big trout that seems to hang out in the inlet area of South Lake. I've thrown all kinds of stuff at it but I couldn't get it to bite. You are close enough to give that thing a shot at different times. So far I tried the crack of dawn, last week, and the end of the afternoon a few weeks back. No dice. If you stand on the far side of the inlet after crossing the creek, you might see it hanging out there on the far side. It takes off if you try to approach the inlet on the closer side.

    Hey Amani, genetic contamination sounds a little harsh... how about genetic hybridization? It’s pretty simply, those fish just have to “get it on” when nature say’s it’s time!!!

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 года назад +1

      I guess I use that terminology because that was the reason they opened up Cottonwood Lakes to fishing. It stuck with me after they used the term in what I read about that situation. As far as fisheries and pure strains of trout go, it's accurate. They used to use those lakes for Golden Trout brood stock until they discovered a little Rainbow trout genetics in there. I haven't seen it manifest itself through physical traits in Cottonwood Lakes or cottonwood creek personally but it was detected through testing in the 90's. I fished near by South Fork lakes a couple of days ago and those Goldens seemed pure as well. At least I couldn't see the rainbow in them if it exists at all. I'm OK with using "genetic contamination' as long as I'm not talking about people!

      Yes it was. When I first got that rainbow I was a little worried that's all there would be but the gold showed up soon enough. Would have been a greater day if I didn't get chased out by heavy rain at around 2pm! Killed my jig fishing clip plans. When I took a nap it was partly cloudy but I woke up to howling wind and soon to follow rain. Not so great for hiking out!

    Hey Amani, Stan here frm San Francisco. How is the foot traffic hiking in to the lake?. The road driving in to the TH seems pretty busy. @@wildernesswithamani1027 Thanks for the reply. Yes I would think most folks stick to 168, especially if in an RV. I noticed that you like goldens, have you tried Gibbs Lake and Kidney Lake in Ansel Adams Wilderness? Access is via Horse Meadow Rd off 395 just south of the 120 junction. I fished Gibbs years ago and caught some colorful goldens, I did not fish Kidney but it is reputed to hold goldens as well. The hike in is easy but the drive to the TH is, or was, washboardy when I went. Thanks for all the great content. When I can't get to the mountains I watch your videos and it takes me there instantly. It also puts an aching in my heart because I want to fly fish for those mountain trout so bad!

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 года назад +1

      I typically use inexpensive 5 weight 4 piece backpacking fly rods that run about $50. I'd use a random fly rod from a garage sale without hesitation if that's all I had. I mostly care about just getting to the water and fishing. I'll work the rest out. The rod I have now was donated by a kind viewer after I snapped my last rod. That rod was half black and half green because it was made up of components from two different fly rods! You can see it in some of my older fly fishing clips. I use 4lb Berkley vanish fluorocarbon as a leader. Whatever flies I have left in my box is what I use whether the fish want them or not. It's my job to make them bite! I have a clip on my fishing tips playlist for very basic fly fishing if you are just starting out. I include a lot of variety in my approach depending on what the fish are doing or what the shoreline looks like but that clip shows the basics of what I do. The rest comes with a lot of fishing experience.

    Hi Amani! I want to take my 7 year old twin boys fishing for the first time in the Sierra's. I live in Las Vegas and trying to find something relatively close. Is Lone Pine a good spot or is there something closer that you would suggest? Thanks!

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 года назад

      I just got back from fishing for golden trout above Lone Pine at South Fork Lakes. That's a 4 mile hike one way that I'm not sure a 7 year old would dig. One option would be Onion Valley. Check out my clips for Onion Valley on my 'backcountry lakes and creeks' playlist. That is just to the north of Lone Pine and the hike to the first lake is less than a mile. The second lake is better, I think Gilbert lake, and that is barely over a mile. You could camp in the campground at the trailhead and day hike up with minimal packs. There is a creek down there to mess around in too. It's brook trout action which can be easy for the youngsters. Hope that helps. Great you are taking the kids fishing.

      I would think your largest golden were at cottonwood?

    • @wildernesswithamani1027
      @wildernesswithamani1027  2 года назад

      I have never measured any of them because I usually just try to get them back in the water but I would say I have hit several in the 16 inch range in Cottonwood Lakes over the years. Hilton Lake #3 had some real nice goldens and golden/rainbow hybrids and I saw one cruise by down deep there that was easily over 16 inches so I definitely need to do more work on that lake. I got some nice ones in those Hilton lake #3 clips but nothing close to the size of the one I saw swim by.
