    Such an amazing game/end of a trilogy. Likely the first JRPG prequel in history, and the impact of the ending was just. Ugh so good.

    I finished the original trilogy on the Switch last year and 1 and 3 have a place in my heart, 1 is simple but fun and challenging enough and 3 is charming with the plot and the roleplaying aspect, I made the characters based on my friends and girlfriend.

    DQ3 on GBC was my first Dragon Quest game when I was 11. I enjoyed the hell out of it but got my ass kicked during the mid game every playthrough. Eventually ended up beating it about a year ago.
    Definitely one of my favorite entries in the series despite the difficulty. Great story, music, graphics, and class system. Feels somewhat light on content compared to modern DQ games but to my it symbolizes the quintessential DQ experience. Just a solid game all around that had a lasting impact on the series.

      There is a fan translation of the SNES remake which is amazing. The sprites are a lot better than the GBC version since it was made in the DQ6 engine and carries over the improvements made by the other SNES titles. The GBC version does have one extra dungeon though, plus the monster medals if you like collecting them. Shame we never got a proper release of this version so you can only play it in English with a patched ROM on an emulator.

    I lost it when I beat Zoma as a kid and found out you were the hero from 1. I played Dragon warrior 1 on NES in middle school and couldn't find 2 anywhere. When I read in Nintendo Power they were re-releasing 3 I was so excited. I played it nonstop. I enjoyed the first game well enough but it was 3 that cemented my love for it. I would then play 9 on the DS and stupidly miss out on picking up 4, 5, and 6 remakes. I definitely picked up 7 and 8 though.

    Personally not a fan of these games. Just not fun to play. But damn I gotta respect just how much we owe to Dragon Quest. They started so much of what we "expect" outta games (not just jrpgs, either) these days. And that ending was incredible. After what seems like somewhat of a mess the first 2 seemed, that twist payed off on so many levels!

    I'm so glad I got to see this before I left for the next few weeks, another great episode.
    I find it interesting how similar the UI in Dragon Quest III and the first Pokemon games look. Despite it being 8 years later, they are almost identical.

    • @GCVazquez
      @GCVazquez  9 лет назад +1

      Adam McDermott You'll probably make it back in time for the next one too! The GBC release of DQ3 was only about four years after the first gen Pokemon games, so there's either a built-in template or Gamefreak made such a good UI that TOSE (the guy's that adapted DQ3 to GBC) couldn't come up with anything else. Rest of the sprite work is very Pokemon as well. Could be that the GBC makes it difficult to deviate from that style.
      All this talk about the differences between the ports of these games is starting to breed another video in this mini-series. Might do it once I finish VII!

    They may have called him Loto in the GBC release, but to me it will always be Erdrick. Before then, Zoom only returned you to Tantegel Castle in DQI, and to the last place you saved in DQII. Re-releases of both might have updated them to more modern conventions, but before 3, it was a very limited spell that didn't function like the Zoom we have today.

The hardware in the phone was pathetically weak and it had very little storage so the game got cut down to work on it. Not to mention the cut content from the GBC remake. Pretty good review of my favorite RPG of all time. I do find the ending of Erdrick/Loto being a title name in DQ3 kinda skeptical as it implies that there was someone within the Dragon Quest worldbuilding canon named Erdrick/Loto who’s heroism was so legendary his name became a title in it of itself. So yes while the Hero in DQ3 isn’t literally named Erdrick/Loto, he’s still Erdrick/Loto to me in terms of working his way up into becoming a hero that brought the story of DQ1 and 2 gawking over the who/what/how/when/where of Erdrick/Loto to a close.
    Perhaps a next Dragon Quest game might reveal who this Erdrick/Loto originally was before his name became a title name? Where did such a term even come from that defines “Legendary Hero” within the context of the Dragon Quest worldbuilding canon?

    Another hell yeah in your direction, GC :P
    Not gonna lie, pretty convinced DQ3 might be my next game after I finish my FFT challenge run.
    Quick question though! (and if you don't answer I'll just wing it)
    Any version you'd recommend? I have no qualms with technical limitations and my question is more based on which feels the best or most complete or 'right' to you.

    • @GCVazquez
      @GCVazquez  9 лет назад +2

      redphienix YO, play the Japan exclusive SNES version and look up the fan translation. The SNES version of this game is exactly like the GBC version, minus one of two bonus dungeons (and one is enough), but the sprite work and music on the SNES version is SO good.
      And opt out of playing the NES original. Like I said in my video: They couldn't fit all the intended features into the original release, but they did manage to put those into subsequent releases as well as use a lot of convenience features that make the experience way smoother.

      +GC Positive Just finished playing through the SNES version, that was definitely a good game :D
      I had forgotten about some of what was mentioned in this video, not to mention I've never played any DQ game besides the game boy incarnations of the monsters series- so it was a nice blind run.
      Impressed by how easily you could figure out what to do by talking to NPCs.
      Pachisi is cool as heck.
      Keeping comments from rambling isn't nearly as cool.
      Keep up the great work, man. YOU are amazing.

    You really also need to do a far better job researching the differences between the original NES entry and this remake that you're actually featuring here. Many of the things you mentioned in this game were not present in the original, such as the Pachisi tracks.
    This remake actually has a whole bunch of additions to it that the original NES version did not have, such as the personalities, tons of new equipment, the Thief class (An amazing additon for those who change classes a lot due to their fantastic MP growth), etc.

    • @thedoorman6940
      @thedoorman6940 5 лет назад +3

      Erdrick/ Loto are merely titles like king or Joker. Their real name is... whatever you want it to be(now for some fun facts, Loto is the name given in the GB Color remakes and is a more closer translation of the Japanese name Roto. Erdrick is from the first release of Dragon Quest over in the states and worldwide when it was called Dragon Warrior and is the name most used. Hopefully that makes sense :/)

    this easily could be a very dumb question, but do the gbc dragon warrior t games contain batteries that will have to be replaced? I want to buy this game, but I don't want to have to worry about running out of battery and ruining my save file.

    • @GCVazquez

    Once again, if you bothered to do some research, you'd know that there IS in fact a way to raise both Magic AND Breath spell resistance. There are actual spells in the game that do both of these things, as well as equipment that reduces the damage you take from both. Research man, do your research when you do a review!

    DQII was better constructed and polished then DQI? You must not have played NES version of it.... It was a huge mess and devs apologizes for it lol. Although, the third installment was the best apology they could offer.
    Nice channel btw.

  • @skins4thewin

    That's actually not true at all about magic power. It is not at all based on your stats and is actually random between a set value. It will never do any more or less damage than a predetermined amount. This is only the 2nd video in this series and already each one has had a pretty big bit of misinformation. You might want to study this stuff a bit more man.

    This ding dong doesn't know how wisdom works in Dragon Quest 3. People have hacked the game and there's info out there on how stats work in these games but, in almost every review of this game I see, they get it wrong.
