It is sad that Dragon Quest doesn't get the love and attention in the States as it does in Japan. I wish that Dragon Quest Collection came out here as well. Either way, great look back at this classic RPG! :)
That's entirely Nintendo's fault. They chose to localize the archaic first game in 1989 when they could have just localized 3 and had a game more than worthy of competing with Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star.
The fact that you can make a 10 minute video feel like half an hour's worth of material and be able to present it in an appealing and informative package is the reason I love this series. Good job as always, and I can't wait to see the next one!
6:11 too primitive of graphics to recommend? The graphics were GREAT, especially for the GBC. And they still had the surprisingly smooth combat animations from the SNES port to boot! The game was HUGE too, especially for a GBC title with tons to do besides explore the world.
@@GiordanDiodato which is just the mobile port, which is the SNES version but stripped down(no combat animations, no animated into, etc.) It's probably the worst version of the game save the original American NES port.
maybe you should try looking at his video list again, larry. he's made 5 videos in the last 5 months, one just 4 days ago (1 day before you posted yours)
ClanofTheGrayWolf is like another user: Rebeltaxi. They both take FOREVER yet their videos are timeless as they provide us with such a rich and flavorful incite on their respective topics. Pretty much a bad review will always be bad but a delayed review will eventually be good.
It's very interesting how Square Enix has gone about with XI tying it into III (very much a Final Destination 5 situation) and now we're getting that remake with Octopath's engine. It's almost like they were setting up a revisit to this game, or in some of cases a first exposure.
I can't simply describe in words how amazing this review is! I'm 15 years old and I'm also "RPG'd out." I remember 2 years ago, when I started playing J-RPG's, and I found this game series - my imagination was taken very far and I was surprised that the games are underrated. Hopefully someday the series becomes well-known in America. Also, another underrated game series to review on the SNES I think would be Fire Emblem because those games are just as overlooked as Dragon Quest and Earth Bound.
I don't care that the video is nearly a year old, G+ gives updates on comments! Thank you for the heads-up on the translation, Roo. I remember Nintendo Power showing info on the GBC remake and thinking it looked awesome, but I never had the chance to get it. Well, now I know what I've been missing. Started playing at 11PM and by the time I finally checked the time, it was 4AM.
Baramos is one hell of a villain! In the new DQ11 for the Switch, there's actually an optional 2D area where you get to fight him once again, and he is BY FAR the hardest fight in the entire game imo. It was literally the only fight that gave me any challenge in this game, including the Post Game boss. As I fought him semi early and was playing the game blind, it was a complete shock when I first fought him and I admittedly did Game Over my very first time as I didn't see it coming. It was the one and only time I ever Game Overed in Dragon Quest 11. That fight is no joke tho. It was also by far the most fun fight of the entire game as well. It was an absolute blast! I also loved how you had to traverse an EXACT copy of his dungeon from Dragon Quest 3 to get to him. It's literally you playing through the final dungeon of DQ3 in DQ11. It's fantastic! Oh yeah, not to mention the Switch version has an ALL NEW arrangement of the Baramos fight theme, and it's the best version I've heard of it thus far! I really, REALLY wish I could find that version somewhere online, but I haven't seen anyone upload it as of yet!
I really enjoyed playing the mobile versions of 1-3 on my Switch. They greatly increase the playability and menu management.I know some don't like them, but I'm fond of the drawn monsters as well. The game ended up blowing my mind, as this was my first playthrough of the series (I'm on 5 atm) and I wasn't using guides so the specifics of the surprise at the end blew my mind, and I didn't expect to see Alfheim. The class system is also my favorite way of management characters as well - I hope some of the later ones pick up on this.
I just beat this on the Nintendo Switch!! I loved it!!!!!!!!! I did not want it to end! I beat it with a lineup of Hero, Soldier, Sage, and Pilgrim. My hero was at lvl 57, And the rest of the crew was at lvl 50-53. My soldier was blasting out 400 plus damage and my hero right under up in the 390's when they were buffed with the damage spell. Man what a great time!
I played 3 on the GBC and while I really liked it, I'm someone that prefers RPGs to really motivate me to push through countless hours of grinding and random battles with a really good story. 3's story isn't very deep at all, though not as paper thin as the first two so it took me a good while to beat it playing it off and on. But it's a definitely a good game, I wouldn't play it anywhere other than the GBC just to be able to play it on the bus or something.
There's de iOS/android version now too, pretty good on my opinion, with improved music quality... although there are no battle animations. In any case, grinding is less of an issue when you are playing in a bus on your way to school, for instance, and it's a relatively unexpensive game. It's a great way to experience a classic for the new generations :)
***** I still would recommend the mobile versions. The new localizations retain the Old English language while updating it to be more faithful to the originals, and though the game can only be played in portrait, it actually makes it very easy to play one-handed. The controls take some getting used to, but considering it's a turn-based JRPG it's really not that bad. Not only that, but I would say buy them to show Square that there IS a market for these games in the west, and to show them we care about Dragon Quest. I'd still LOVE for these updated versions to be released on other platforms, but for that to happen we need to show that Dragon Quest is wanted.
You say what my entire life of experience tells me to be true. great choices of DQ games to review as well. all favorite games of mine and my favorite of all time DQ8
Great Dragon Quest III retrospective. I've been playing the Dragon Quest 3r Super Famicon translation. It really is great. It's easier than the original, but not as easy as the GBC games were.
it took me seven years to finish this game on my gbc , because at the time i was 10 yo, i did not know english, it was my first rpg, so when i won i was already a teenager i did know english, it was a fucking epic day
Roo, in an internet full of Call of Duty trash-talk videos and poor taste "fail" compilations, you bring a wisdom and air of class that is unsurpassed!!! Keep 'em comin'!
I definitely overlooked this game the first time I played it; I even thought that it was a ripoff of Pokemon. But after learning more about the franchise and playing DQ 3 once again--it has become one of my most favorite games ^_^.

Do... do my eyes deceive me? Is that a new episode of 16-bit gems? No, it couldn't be, it must be a mirage. I've been trying to survive this Gem drought for long enough. But wait! Could this be real? Yes! The next coming of the holy one has come! Roo is here! Good to see you back, Roo! Great episode too!
X has the mainstream appeal, one of the reasons we don't think it's that great is because it's so linear and simple, but that is the reason casuals can pick it up and play it. You also have to remember how impressive the graphics were at the time, that alone reserves a nostalgia plot in people's hearts. It's part of the reason FF VII is my favorite video game.
I know this channel hasn't been active in a real long time, but Roo, if you happen to read this & you're still interested in continuing the 16-Bit Gems series, you should do Shin Megami Tensei II for the SFC.

looking back, yeah I miss ya, we all miss ya Roo, however I'm gonna put my two gold pieces in on some things 1. emulation is still a touchy subject but here is how I see it, if I legally can not gain a game directly from the publisher/dev/ip owners I feel like emulating is fine. That being said for this game, there is the IOS and many console ports of this game. 2. The GBC version while it has problems I feel has a slightly cozier feel to me. Not as grand as the SNES version but a nice nostalgic trip down memory lane as my party of Kick Rick Mick and Dick go kick some monster's teeth in
Roo you are such a tease. lol Anyway, good episode as usual. I actually can't wait for the next one. Also, thanks to your review I'll check out the SNES versions of Dragon Quest 1-3. I have 5 and 6 on the DS (I may have to find 4) but I just wish these 3 would be released on the 3DS.
