To answer your question about why Jamis dies instead of becoming Paul's friend (like in his visions): it's because Paul sees many *possible* futures, different timelines and possibilities - not necessarily the exact future he's going to experience. So with Jamis, he saw an alternate future where the two of them became good friends, and Jamis taught him all about living in the desert. But sadly, that's not the future that Paul actually gets.

10:05, Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa) is a member of the inner circle of Paul’s father Duke Leto. He has been with the Atreides family since he was a young boy. Leto was like an older brother to Duncan and mentored him to become a commander in his army. Duncan attended the Ginaz swordmaster school and is one of its finest graduates.
Duncan loves the Duke and his family like they are his blood kin. That is why he is like a big brother to Paul.

There are no "powers" in Dune, only skills that are learned over a lifetime in the most advanced and deepest disciplines across more than 10,000 years of human history.
Paul has been trained since infancy in the Bene Gesserit's psychological and physical mastery by his mother, as a swordsman by Duncan Idaho(a Ginaz Master, the only swordsmen equal to the Emperor's Sardaukar commandos), as a Mentat(a human supercomputer) by Thufir Hawat and as a General by Gurney Halleck, the most renowned(and feared) soldier in the Imperium.
Plus he is Leto's son...and an accidental genetic freak, a wild, unplanned Kwisatz Haderach. The Bene Gesserit intended an Atreides daughter to be wed to a Harkonnen son, thus healing the political rift and creating the bloodline for the Kwisatz Haderach...but Jessica loved Leto too much and gave him the son he wanted so badly.
What Paul sees isn't the future, but a mosaic of possible futures. The "Prophecy" of the Lisan al Ghaib is a lie, planted by the Bene Gesserit over many centuries on many planets for the protection of their sisters. The Jihad he sees is a culmination of the unstable political system, the particularly virulent form of the prophecy among the Fremen, the sheer ferocity of the Fremen (They can go toe to toe with the Sardaukar-very few can do that) all spiraling into the focal point of the wild Kwisatz Haderach.
Hundreds of billions will die in his name. He MUST stop that.

Dune explores the potential of improving the Human condition to its maximum potential. In the history of the Dune series, a war was fought to free mankind from being enslaved by thinking machines (Butlerian Jihad) so computers were no longer allowed. This forced humans to improve themselves both mentally and physically to the point where machines were not needed. The Bene Gesserit train their bodies and minds to be able to control themselves at the cellular level, and also mentally to be able to control others with their voice (like the power of suggestion). Mentats are like human computers, and Guild Navigators can see just far enough of the future to guide ships safely through foldspace. All of this is made possible (or enhanced) through Spice.

The Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV of House Corrino has a lot of power. He shows up in Dune Part Two and is played by Christopher Walken. His daughter, Princess Irulan is played by Florence Pugh.
The entire balance of power rests on the tripod of The Emperor, The Landsraad (the Congress of the Noble Houses), and The Spacing Guild which holds the monopoly on all space travel. With Duke Leto's popularity growing, the Emperor feared that he would try something. Since Leto remained unmarried, a political marriage with a daughter of the Emperor might have been possible, BUT...as Baron Harkonnen said, "the emperor is a dangerous, jealous man". The Emperor ordered House Harkonnen to leave Arrakis, giving up the contract to mine the spice after 80 years. At an appointed time, the Harkonnen would take back Arrakis in a sneak attack on the Atriedes, leading the Landsraad to believe that the animosity between the two Houses blew up and the Atreides were destroyed. To make Baron Harkonnen go along with the plan, the Emperor promised his Saudaukar troops (in the movie 3 battalions (3,000 troops), in the book the promise is 5 legions (in Roman times about 5,000 men per legion, in Dune about 30,000 per legion or 150,000 troops). The plan failed. Paul and Jessica escaped.
Among the many themes that Herbert employs in the novel are the repeating patterns of history. I mean, a distant future with feudal nobility, plotting like Renaissance politicos worshipping Machiavelli, over a finite resource as the most precious in the universe. That is a lot! He uses ecology, spirituality, religion, the messianic impulse, economics, power dynamics, Jungian psychological motifs and archetypes, and the belief that charismatic leaders are inherently dangerous all into focus in this universe he created. The film only tells half of the story of the first novel, and Herbert wrote 6 Dune novels before he died in 1986...and his son, Brian continued on with another 14 novels starting in the very early 2000s. Since 1965 when the novel was published, Dine has been for sci-fi what Lord of the Rings is for fantasy.

I'm late for your reaction, but to give a tiny bit of context: the Harkonnen's have been skimming and stockpiling thier own spice reserves for 80 years as well. The Emperor basically said they either destroy the Atreides for him or face the dire consequences of spice hoarding and market manipulation. The cost of using a Guild Highliner (big cigar tube ship) is immense and even more so when transporting military assets as this poses more risk to the Guild. This forced the Harkonnens to spend a good majority of their stockpiles to even transport their forces off and back onto Arrakis.

Been a fan of the book since I was a kid and it's wonderful to see others being introduced with this all-around really great adaptation.
Book has many more sub-plots, characters and scheming going on and goes into rich and interesting detail about so many things in this universe. You can see themes in the books about the nature of leadership, the power of faith, gender, geographical impact on culture and much more. Some of the themes I can't even mention without spoiling part 2. One of the most wide-reaching stories i know and somehow it doesn't loose track of it's core story and it all comes together to feel relevant and poignant.

    Okay, here some answers.
Both great Houses have their own entire planet
    House Harkonnen: Planet Giedi Prime
House Atreides: Planet Caladan(which they had to leave for Arrakis)
Empeor Shaddam the 4th : Planet Kaital( Emperor appears in the second movie)
Arrakis is a planet, the city, the capitol is called Arrakeen,
Arrakis indigenous people are the Fremen, the great Houses only go there by imperial decree to harvest the spice which is needed for safe space travel( not a time portal) and to make money....and it causes premonitions in some individuals....and it expends life for a couple of decades, so the people can become 150 to 200 years old
The Emperor wanted to get rid of House Atreides because they became to popular, for which he used the Harkonnens and his own army, the Sardaukar, so the whole thing was a setup from the beginning
The emperor doesn't know that Paul and his mother are still alive and that they joined the Fremen. So he thinks he has won. Harkonnens are on Arrakis again and the Emperor watches over them. He thinks every possible threat to his power is gone or under control.

The thing on the nose is not for breathing, it is to recover nose humidity for recycling. Arrakis atmosphere is perfectly breathable, it's just that the inhabitants go out mostly at night or dusk/dawn to conserve their body's water the most possible.
Jessica wasn't allowed to produce a make heir for the Atreides but she was sent to be with Leto to make a Atreides girl who would have married one of Baron Harkonnen's nephews, likely Feyd Rautha that we see in the second movie. However, by love for Leto, she decided to give him a son instead (they control their bodies so much that they can decide which spermatozoid will enter their egg to decide the sex of the child). I also bet that Jessica has some inner personnal motives as well.
What the movie doesn't mention is that the Guild, the Emperor and the Houses of the Landsraad are part of the Combinate of Honest Ober -something- Merchants (CHOAM), the galactic Market or Stock Exchange if you prefer. Just like Oil in the US, Solaris are indexed on Spice. Spice is necessary both for nobles and Navigators (those latter use it to gain prescience to see safe trajectories into Hyperspace without advanced computers and AI which were banned just before the creation of the Guild, the date 10191 is based on the creation of the Guild as a reference, not JC, the War which banned computers is settled approx 16 000 years from now), and to settle money value. Arrakis is not given to the same House for too long otherwise, they would become too rich and powerful to control.
Thanks to Bene Gesserit's bloodline crossing, every great Noble House are related to eachother. Leto is even a cousin of the Emperor himself.
The Emperor is not that powerful, he's kept in check by the Landsraad on one side and the Guild on the other. However, his family, House Corrino, had been on the throne for millenia and he intends to keep it that way.
Worms couldn't live in a watery environment, they are allergic to water. And BTW, Spice is their poop.
No, what Jessica fears is that she loses control on the prospect she hoped to bring forth for the Bene Gesserit. Paul is wary of her and the Order.

Time portal? It’s a Highliner. Used by the spacing guild to travel from planet to planet. Inside the Highliner is a space navigator. The space navigator consumes large quantities of spice. The spice expands the navigators mind, allowing it to fold space, and guide the Highlander to one part of space to another. Each great house pays to have their own supply of spice. The emperor distributes the spice to the great houses. Without spice, there will be no galactic empire. Everyone would be isolated on their own planets.

The Spacing Guild is an organization in Frank Herbert's science fiction Dune universe that possesses a monopoly on interstellar travel and banking. Guild Navigators (alternately Guildsmen or Steersmen)[a] use the drug melange (also called "the spice") to achieve limited prescience, a form of precognition that allows them to successfully navigate "folded space" and safely guide enormous starships called heighliners across interstellar space instantaneously.@@rodin9836

Just like you drive your car onto a ferry, you fly your spaceship into a Spacing Guild Highliner, the Highliner then performs interstellar travel with you and your ships onboard. At your destination, you disembark from the Highliner and it moves on to its next contract.

Slow moving objects pierce shields. Shields repel fast things, like bullets, missiles, and swift swords strikes. But slow pressing stabs or slices, robotic darts programmed to slow themselves, and
crushers, which are sky dropped artillery that link up and slow their motion to press through a shield work. So that is a shield’s limitation-But more destructive projectiles like bullets, shells, and missiles can’t neutralize a shield. Nor can lasguns (lasers) be used against shielded targets because they destroy both the shielded and the laser gunner (plus they’re illegal). It is illegal to use any weapon that causes a nuclear detonation on human targets.

The Navigators are not a separate species. They are humans who have been mutated by extreme continuous exposure to the spice melange.
The Navigators use the spice to see into the near futures to find a safe path through interstellar space. They then input that path into the systems of their Heighliner ships. It is the ships that create the wormhole not the Navigators themselves.

especially space travel was hit by this technology ban very hard, because safe navigation between the stars was impossible without AI support and 1 out of 10 ships that tried to travel to another star was lost.
in this new age new orders emerged. for example the mentats, human males who where trained to discipline their minds to bridge the gap that the missing artificial intelligence left. they where not only experts in mathematics, they where also brilliant strategists, thinkers and planners, surpassing even what AI could do.
another order that emerged where the bene gesserit, human females who trained their minds to enhance and control their own body chemistry, giving them superhuman abilities like "the voice". they can also for example chose the sex of their children. some even can move so quickly that it seems like they teleport. also, a fully developed bene gesserit reverend mother has genetical memory of all her female ancestors. they can also sense truth in others.
a third order was the spacing guild, who developed their minds using spice to mutate their bodies to earn a skill called prescience. whith that they where able to predict safe paths between the stars.
the missing technology from the lost era before "the butlerian jehad" gave rise to older principles of war again. you might ask yourself why fighting with swords is still a thing on a battlefield where missiles, guns, lasers and other more or less modern weapons are used. it got its renaissance when energy shields where invented. the shields in the dune universe block everything that goes fast. everything slow they let through. so, they block for examples bullets, shockwaves and shrapnell from explosions, most other projectiles as well. BUT there is one exeption: laser weapons. if a laser hits an energy shield the shield detonates in a nuclear explosion, also sending a feedback pulse back through the laser beam and exploding the gun itself as well. which such a big drawback to these weapons they are used rarely and carefully. that is why duncan idaho's ornithopter was first hit by a missile (to collapse its shield) and THEN the harkonens tried to shoot him down with the blue laser beam, to avoid desaster. this is why sword fighting is again part of their war culture, because its the best means to attack when personal energy shields are in widespread use. many modern weapons are more or less useless, but a delicate blade can penetrate a shield if it hits with the right speed in the right place.
the nose piece of the stillsuits is for breathing out. that way no moisture leaves the system of the suit and is recycled like all other fluids that leave the body in any way.
the emperors legions, the sardaukar, come from the planet seluca secundus. its a so called hell-world with extreme enviromental conditions and hazards. only the toughest of the toughest survive the training to become sardaukar. they are feared in the imperium. usually all unwanted and criminals are send there to be reconditioned into an emperors blade.
the lady jessica and leto atreides where not married to leave the duke open for a political marriage. maybe to become emperor one day himself. this is why the current emperor felt so threatened by the house atreides.
also: paul sees in his visions not THE future, but POSSIBLE futures. but he still gets the knowledge from them, if it comes true or not.

I still can’t believe that you did an internet out of order version of Star Wars for a FIRST TIME watch. Rewatching is fine, but you let them deprive of a total experience that you can’t get back. Don’t lose anything by listening to loud corners of the internet.
Also, don’t help the internet kill theatrical versions. Watch them first, then watch extended versions later as intended and mainly experienced.

the reactor really tries to sound smart here. attempting to pick up on nuances and development. but you can tell she's doing it for money and attention and doesnt actually care about the story.
