If you look at lower powered cars at the nurburgring for example. They tend to stay away from wide wheels/tires because of the mass. People who run E36 M3’s actually go quicker on 235’s than 245’s for example, and they have 140hp more than this RX8. I believe the E36 M3 stock motor record BTG is done on 235/45 Dunlop DZ03G. I just watched two men add a lot of drag to an underpowered car. I hope there aren't a lot of long straights on this track. Otherwise this rx-8 is going to get smoked.
Adding downforce to slower cars is not so detrimental. The reason why is because underpowered cars can't reach the speeds where the drag matters so much to begin with. Wind resistance does not scale linearly, so, drag matters a lot more the faster you go
When sanding exhaust flanges you should always use a belt sander bigger than the flange. Using a die grinder like that will just make the flange surface not be flat, causing a leak.

Forced induction + alcohol please. Rotaries love methanol injection or ethanol for fuel for the knock resistance and cooling. Rotaries don't cool the combustion chamber well since intake and exhaust take place in different parts of the housing.
Looks like it'll handle well into a sweeper at 100mph, but it's gonna need such a long straight to get to that speed. And a 235 track tire would've been the move, a 275 is a lot of unnecessary unsprung weight to add for such little power. Plus a wider tire adds frictional resistance which slows you down in straights.
Many people stating the rx8 won't push the wheels but forget hit import in japan did many many builds that showed the rx8 handling incredibly well with tires alone.
I did love the Forza wing line. Big laugh for that no doubt. But I agree with Mark, you need to do more. No replacement for displacement, needs more power. My tuned Golf might give you a run for your money as that sits now.
Everybody ragging on the aero... :D A low power car benefits from aero a lot. A 9 Lives Racing wing on my 170 whp MR-S cut 3 seconds off on a 90 sec track. Every single braking point has a HIGHER speed with the wing due to higher cornering speed, earlier throttle and thus, faster exit from the corner before. Also, the Torsen diff doesn't slip any more, meaning yet earlier throttle at the exit. Depends on the track, of course, but low power cars will not reach the point where drag kills your top speed. So I am more than certain the RX-8 is faster with the added aero. The 275's, on the other hand...
You can add about 30% or more front downforce with tunnels/diffusers in it. And I'd close that gap up and vent the hood if you want the front to really work. Also people in the comments stop pretending like you know what you're talking about with the 275 wide tires. A wider wheel and tire combo will almost always be faster around a road course. Very obvious you're not racing a road course car. Nobody would ever say a narrower wheel and tire will be faster. It's really that simple. Wider is almost always faster. Even on 100 hp car. Grip is always a limiting factor unless it's an oval or huge insanely long straight track. Even cota a 275 would be faster than a 235 or 245
Strip down the interior. All they need is the driver seat and door handles. Passenger, rear seat, all the panels sound dampening, anything in the trunk, spare tire. Also in the trunk from the inside add some rods so the wing mounts rest on them and have them rest on the trunks floor. That will allow you to run more down force.
This comment is the winner. Gotta gut the rx8. Drop the weight by 500 pounds will give it shot. Balance the weight if possible. Might need reinforcements.
I personally can't wait to see the race! I love both cars so iam not siding on one or the other. But my heart senses a roadtrip in them, atleast I'm hoping for it! Track is why I subscribed to G&G,but its been a good minute since we got a roadtrip episode!
@easydayez true bridge port cant extend port you can. RUclips has habit of calling all types of porting o a rotor bridgeporting. If properly bridgported the forced induction causes porblems due to the overlap. not saying you cant do some form of porting because huge power rotors are always ported but they pretty specific to application. Na vs turbo you approach it differently. But loads of examples of people doing the wrong thing on youtube for sure. Doesnt mean their engine didnt go kaboom a week later. Bridgeporting provides the best results for na. Plus this 13b type not fantastic for turbo to begin with. Turboing a bridgeported renesis is a recipe for kablamo in the real world not youtube bs world.
Ben is going to be running Honda s2000 with spoon engine, and on top of that, he just went into Harry’s and bought a t66 turbo with nos, and a motec exhaust system.
It’d be epic to see a factory renesis 13b make more power while utilizing a turbocharger. I’m just hoping that the Ben Thorne’s Ford Escort will get another chance to make a road trip. As uncommon to many better known platforms as this is to modify it’s what got me hooked for a long time following you guys at gears and gasoline. It’s definitely awesome seeing that in recent times the rx8 is finally getting more popular and recognized by us enthusiasts
Well Ben. You could have Easly fixed the flex issue of the trunk lid by installing struts inside the trunk and distribute the load to a wider area without adding a lot of weight. Just check how you can transfer the down force load from the trunk lid to the inner part of the trunk.
The Renesis, the answer to can you make a rotary clean running and reliable. Answer, not really. The exhaust ports are the killer with this engine as it bakes the casing seals.
Around 2010-2012, some of my friends who owns an RX-8 tried pretty much all combinations of modifications except engine porting... The most power comes by removing that stupid cat and putting there a proper, single exit 76mm (3 inches) full exhaust. That gives the highest increase in HP. Second most critical modification is a lightweight flywheel. One of my friend's rx8 dynoed 206 whp with 76 mm single exit full exhaust, headers, lightweight flywheel and a tune (tune gave very little). So, if you really want to get some gains, no-cat and 76mm single exit full exhaust is kind of must. Yes it will be very loud bla bla... But at least 10whp is lost there otherwise... Found the video of the pull: ruclips.net/video/YnyFhFr-rVQ/видео.html
Yep, I was glad they installed a header, but leaving the stock cat and mid-pipe, I knew it was going to come in low for power. The Renesis' weakness is its exhaust ports! Do everything to make the exhaust flow well. That Bridgeport only made the problem worse. That poor stock cat is going to be melted before the end of their race.
I remember there being a lot of noise when the RX8 came out that it dyno's low became the ECU didn't see the front wheels rotating so it pulled back power. I think you're making more real power when the car is moving, maybe another 30 whp.
Eric should have made some struts to anchor the wing to the bottom of the trunk. Just bolt it to the bottom and that would support the weight without having to chassis mount it.
Hedders in REV engine is really good designed. If RX-8 had be fastest as it can be, you should build lightest car you can, plus good driving position, good suspension with allignment, tyres and at the end add more lightness ;)
Love it awesome I'm also prepreping my rx8 for track use and the builds is almost identical, one thing Wich I found a lil odd that Eric didn't mentioned that a total rotary brake in is 1500miles so they only completed the bare minimum so idk maybe is for production porpoises but small Ben rx8 power is gonna increases cuz he is still in brake in period and the brand new housing ,apex seal and side seal still has to brake in properly so Ben if u read this u still have hope on the power department cuz u literally have all the bolt on mods on rotary for power so it should be around 215-220
Ngl though the rx8 looks sick with all the aero mods at the end. But good lord 188 horsepower is just painful to look at with how much money and work that investment is. Especially for a bridgeport!
There's an awesome JZS15 Crown in the parking lot. Pick that up and leave that thing in the lot with the keys in it and a signed title in the glovebox.
Watching the series in order, let me just say I have high hopes for the RX8, seen an Auto X RX8 build, also NA 1.3, and that RX8 was FLYYYINNGGG, one of the fastest cars at it's events. So I'm thinking even though the RX8 may be a little bigger, and engine a little weaker, the RX8 chassis and balance is very, very good from what I seen, so that's my prediction right now, I think it'll be competitive at least.
I enjoy the video series on this RX8! The RX8 needs more love to battle a K swap S2000 with cams, ITB’s, headers, big brake kit, full tune by a know Honda tuner. Plus the added big aero is going to kill the RX8.
I only do, but for the sake of the RX8. The 8 will be tge better handling car at the limit guaranteed because they're exceptionally easy to drive all the way to the limit, but it doesn't make enough power.
I feel tire width should be selected for the right balance of minimizing rolling resistance and maximizing cornering grip. Same way of thinking for tire selection for na/nb miatas, they are usually faster on a 8” wheel with a 205 rather than a 225
When it comes to low horsepower, area under the curve often matters more than peak number at redline. Let's also not forget about final drive ratio and gearing. The RX8 is geared very short and close to keep it close to redline. My money is still on the S2000 if the track has anything resembling a straight but if they choose a course with lots of medium speed sweeping corners, the RX8 will be able to ride the bumper of the S2000 but never get a chance to pass.
RX8s are a very well handling chassis with the RIGHT suspension and tyre package, Bens S2000 doesnt make a tonme of power and only has extra legs with the revs. I doubt it would pull as much as people think on the straight. Both cars set up equally on a windy tight track would be a very close battle I believe.

Yo it be great if our boys can do a roadtrip in a different country instead. UK? JAPAN? Somewhere right hand drive? It would be something new for them

LOL budget meal build 😅
You should toss on a lightweight flywheel for hehes and hahas to see how much more power you can free up
So happy to see Mr Rad helping out
Boy oh boy, I smell a future roadtrip with those two cars 😊
Even cota a 275 would be faster than a 235 or 245
I don't know why I love watching you make splitters so much. But, I do.
On the curves you could take advantage! Good luck! RX8 team🦾
The "quick release" latches for the splitter, are the same latches used for ambulance doors. Just a fun fact, since I work on ambulances for a living
I personally can't wait to see the race! I love both cars so iam not siding on one or the other. But my heart senses a roadtrip in them, atleast I'm hoping for it! Track is why I subscribed to G&G,but its been a good minute since we got a roadtrip episode!
You're... gonna put a turbo in, right? You're gonna put a turbo in, right???
Unfortunately, the Renesis does not respond well to turbos due to the exhaust ports. If a turbo is in the cards, it really has to be an older 13B.
@@JETZcorp with the amount they spend on the rebuild they could have and i dont think its to late also more content so more money lol
Can't turbo a bridgeport.
@@airfreshna1 yes you can YT has tones of proof of it
@easydayez true bridge port cant extend port you can.
1:41 same Mark, same 😂
I love these builds you guys have been doing lately with this and the dsm. You guys are killing it.
The Renesis, the answer to can you make a rotary clean running and reliable. Answer, not really. The exhaust ports are the killer with this engine as it bakes the casing seals.
Yup gotta port the exhaust
That looks like a blast to drive. No idea how it’ll deal with the S10K, but it looks like a great time.
Get some hub centric rings for the wheels. It centers the studs in the lug holes so sockets wont rub and scratch the paint. It also reduces vibration.
Found the video of the pull:
ruclips.net/video/YnyFhFr-rVQ/видео.html
Yep, I was glad they installed a header, but leaving the stock cat and mid-pipe, I knew it was going to come in low for power.
The Renesis' weakness is its exhaust ports! Do everything to make the exhaust flow well.
That Bridgeport only made the problem worse. That poor stock cat is going to be melted before the end of their race.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO BUILD THE RX8. This my cement the decision of me selling my civic and purchasing an rx8.
I love RX8's, incredible design of the interior and exterior. Wishing you luck against the S2000!
I remember there being a lot of noise when the RX8 came out that it dyno's low became the ECU didn't see the front wheels rotating so it pulled back power. I think you're making more real power when the car is moving, maybe another 30 whp.
do you recall if it were the forums from the time?
Eric should have made some struts to anchor the wing to the bottom of the trunk. Just bolt it to the bottom and that would support the weight without having to chassis mount it.
Man sunday cartoons are the best
Keep up the builds guys! This is youtube gold 🥇
I have never gotten something spoiled by a T-Shirt before…
And boy am I happy to have my hope confirmed!
You know a wider tire does not always equal more traction. There is a real good video going into science between wide and narrow tires.
Link?
great content keep building the RX8!! love it man
Hedders in REV engine is really good designed.
Also removing the knock sensor helps in making power in these engines as they're quite noisy internally causing some issues with higher rpm power.
There's an awesome JZS15 Crown in the parking lot. Pick that up and leave that thing in the lot with the keys in it and a signed title in the glovebox.
We’ve seen both Bens play both sides of the rotary/4-cylinder battle. We need a V8 showdown!
One sick looking Rx8.
Woke up randomly at 4am to see this posted yay
Such a creative genius, seriously!
I kinda want Asian Ben to lose for some reason 😂
He'd be cursing way too much.😅😅😅
Not me hahah that guy needs a break😅
Gotta put those stookie bros in their place. It's our only hope.
Same
I only do, but for the sake of the RX8. The 8 will be tge better handling car at the limit guaranteed because they're exceptionally easy to drive all the way to the limit, but it doesn't make enough power.
I just want an Rx8 more and more watching these videos
Regardless of how fast it is, that RX8 looks sexy. Kinda wanna see how far you can take it as a track build. I have a soft spot for them
I feel tire width should be selected for the right balance of minimizing rolling resistance and maximizing cornering grip.
The "you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about" had me not worried at all, now you can't drive it in the rain anymore
19:30 same reaction when a girl steps on the scale 😂
there was a japanese racer who said on the trach while racing: i hate heavy cars, and heavy chicks XD
"Not that"
I had the same glass with Ben before 16:19😂
Watching you cut into that clean trunk hurts my soul.
Man I hope this rx8 turns into a rx7 slaying tack monster and then send it to alaska all over again!
winning the race or not, this car looks wicked
Ben if you want to win then you have to choose a track that puts the s2000 at a disadvantage. Can't wait for next episode
Safe to say this car is gonna be Ben T's New track car. This and the Civic for different classes or if one is down
RX8s are a very well handling chassis with the RIGHT suspension and tyre package, Bens S2000 doesnt make a tonme of power and only has extra legs with the revs. I doubt it would pull as much as people think on the straight. Both cars set up equally on a windy tight track would be a very close battle I believe.
