Hey Doc, have a question, the polar lights do u need a soldering kit for this build I’m getting this kit for Christmas and was just curious. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
Additionally some people use soapy water and that is a BIG no-no, as the soapy water will allow the vinyl to slide around only as long as it is wet. That soapy water will make the vinyl set down like glue when dry.
I see what looks like a lot of waterbased Vallejo or Vallejo like paints on the table. And if that was the paints used underneath the aztez paint masks, then that was the problem. At the very very least, people should use a lacquer based primer the melts into the styrene, and then if not sticking to lacquer thinner based paints at least enamels. And do a test, don't use a new technique on the hero prop : )
Can’t stand orbital dry dock and the customer service is basically non-existent! I went with the Aztec masking kit by MaskDesign. Very helpful people and they won’t leave you hanging.
There is a trick to using any vinyl masks on models (not just aztec dummies but all). 1 you need to lower the tack of the vinyl by applying to your arm or on your jeans or something. 2 Don't leave the vinyl on the model any longer than necessary. I've never used AD masks, but I've done plenty of model with my own masks using signage vinyl.
Yea check out trekworks he had trouble with the aztec dummies mask then bought another brand that worked far better. Just for a future note since your only building this for hanging display.
Oops! (Or in the UK: "Oopse!") Should proof read my comments more closely before posting. Normally I'm the one who gets annoyed when someone uses "to" when "too" as in: "too much paint" is written, etc. And don't get me started on "textlish!" Right, off to the Pain Booth for me until my lesson is learned!
Looking great so far! If you're worried about loosing the "pearlescent" sheen with the final clear coat Tamiya do a pearl clear rattle-can spray.
You weren't kidding, that's a HUGE kit!

working with vinyl is a pain. But there is a trick. Just heat them up a little with a hairdryer, they come off more easely then
Hmm... Never had a problem with Aztek Dummy vinyl masks. Used them on my 1/1000 NX-01 and they turned out great!

Don't despair, try Orbital Drydock's masks, you'll be quite pleased.
I just bought this kit. Your feedback helped someone out 7 years after the fact! Thank you!
