After 45 years building models, I thought I was accomplished. But I can’t even begin to hold a candle to your beautiful work. I’m 60, and when I was a boy dad and I would watch TOS, and have “TV dinners”. He passed a few years ago, but he would have been blown away by your Enterprise. At the finish, she was stunning, and I almost cried. Thank you for inviting us in to watch your work take shape. I can only say, brilliant, simply brilliant!
Brought me to tears! Beautiful. Brought back my hopes and dreams as a young child thinking of what Star Trek represented and thought possible. I'm so sad we won't make it in my lifetime.
Never get tired of seeing people build this model…. Boyd really set the bar for the Aztec details for this model … talking directly to Paul Olsen who was the original painter for the aztec details on the motion picture enterprise.! Great Job sir!!! Great 👍🏾 Job!!!!
My god...I'm a 43 year old man, weeping with joy. What a thing of beauty. I cannot imagine the sheer will, determination, and patience required for such a project. I've watched Star Trek in every form and iteration we've been presented with over the years, and the Constitution Class refit will always remain my favorite. It's both a beautiful and functional design, from stem to stern. Fabulous work by both the model maker and the model assembler!
When I watched Star Trek the Motion Picture and saw the Enterprise in the dry dock, the scale of this ship overwhelmed me and you can only imagine what engineering was required to design, propel, and refit such a massive ship. I had the same emotions watching this build video. Virtually shaking your hand.
I've watched this 4 times. Incredible. I built an Enterprise A back in the late 90's. Not even close to this but it was really good. Got destroyed in a move. Now I'm gonna do another one.
That model is really Next Level. Well done. I love the music, especially the Overture . TMP was always my favorite of all of them. Another thumbs up for you.
Holy cow, that must have been some heavy duty job, I don't think I would have the nerve nor the patience to build the whole Enterprise, but very good job done, 👏, well done. 😉👏 Now we all just need to move in, new home. 😉 Ha ha.
As much as I loved Jerry Goldsmith's score to the Motion Picture, I can't help but to drown it out and replace it with James Horner's score to Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Kahn. I'm so jealous...I want this model so bad. Great video!👍
Fantastic. Well done on exceptional model building and a great job recording the process including the occasional setback. This brings back many memories for me as a young man back in 1982-83, when I made what I think was the 22 inch model of the refitted Enterprise. Whilst your dedication to the build process is quite frankly phenomenal, I was left somewhat disappointed with the showcase (or to use the correct language, 'the reveal'). Unfortunately from 1982 I don't have any photographic records of my model, but I did play around with some lighting effects after finishing the model in my bedroom. I used my 4.5" refracting telescope counter weight rod to support the model on the telescope tripod, built a star wall with matt black painted cardboard over the window, punched a pin hole star pattern in the cardboard and cut small pieces of fibre optics over the window so that during the day I simply used a torch shining on the model. By masking the stand from the torch light, I could sit back and the ship really looked like it was completely suspended in space. It was an incredible vision. I get goose bumps just writing this. I only wish I had a modern day iPhone to record it as alas, after 40 years the model is no longer with me.
Mr.John as a fellow model master, and devoted Star Trek fan! I must say, not many folks can appreciate the painstaking time, effort, and overall frustration that goes into such a great feat!!! I have been professionally building WW2 and NASA models since 1993! You have demonstrated excellent skill and passion in you're craft! Beautiful work sir! You have inspired me to take on the Enterprise as my next project.. Well done!!
My Dad was a Civil engineer. He got me a drafting board and the 1st thing I attempted with his tools was a well designed Enterprise. I thought he’d laugh when he saw what I’d been working on. He didn’t. He was impressed that I’d designed it “not like a model but as a functional ship. Oh - if he could have seen what you’ve DONE. I’ve never seen such eye for detail, patience, vision and design. Artiste’ Extraordinaire! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Having built more than a few 1701s as a boy I can say that just getting the engines, saucer and secondary haul “just right” is an achievement I could never get quite right. This kind of work leaves me in quiet awe.
Absolutely GORGEOUS! That aztecing is so AWESOME!!! Way too much work for me to put in. Wish I had the time and talent you have! I love the music from the movie too. I sit here admiring your work. I'd be so proud if I were you! I'm blown away. Thank you for sharing the magnificent finished product as well as the obstacles you conquered.
I always think "why people do this? “.... my answer is always, BECAUSE WE ARE DREAMERS!.... this and 29 more models are waiting for me. NICE JOB, REALLY INSPIRING!... a big hug from Chile...
Mine took less than 1 minute. I used the medium replicator in engineering. Seriously though, an absolutely fantastic build, and the documentation is wonderful. Everyone can see this was a true labor of love, from the moment you opened the box, until the final RUclips upload. Thank you for sharing with us.
An exceptional refit done on an exceptional ship. It took a bit of patience to watch this video, but I'm certain not as much as it did for UFM and friends to do the refit. This is "love"!
I'v watched this video probably 20 times , and it's always exciting and fun.. I'm amazed at the work and time that went into this build and how close it came a few times to being all for nothing.. But with the drive and determination you had for this project , everything came out incredible... This is definitely a ( SHOW PIECE ) .. Great job ..🙏
The amount of time and effort you must have put into this boggles the mind. That is probably studio grade work (if studios bothered actually making filming models these days.) Great work
As a small boy, I was absolutely in love w/the Enterprise. I used to put pen drawings of her on the fronts of my school note book binders. And then in 1979, or was it 80? ... The first movie came out. And I was absolutely flabbergasted to see the new, refit ship. I was simply in awe. And to this very day, it's my all time favorite version of the beautiful lady we all call, The USS ENTERPRISE 1701.
The opening theme brought back memories. I remember sitting in the theater and that theme playing before the lights fully faded and the movie began. I was about 12 then. I am at that age now that a sight, sound, or smell will take me to another century. Thank you.
This is just crazy. I just bought the same model and was looking for some tips for the white paint to use and wasn’t expecting to find such dedication to bring the real thing to life. This model kit is going to be much more complicated than I expected if I want to achieve the realism!
That was a very nice build log. I saw this kit a few months back. And I decided to start modelling. I just needed to learn. Now I have a small "work shop" with airbrush and tools. And finished a lighted Klingon D7. Training to learn weathering and panel lining on that. Finished a non lighted Tie Interceptor, but panel lining was not great with the glossy clear "future" so called equivalent. I am trying to complete a 1/537 AMT refit Enterprise. But my god, is that a piece of mis aligned styrene pretending to be a star ship. I am however getting better at using different kinds of putty. So far I have tried Perfect Putty and MR. Surfacer 500 today I am going to sand down the MR 500 - Wish me luck I hope it performs well because I like it a lot. One day I will feel accomplished enough to give this one a go. I can't wait, it is the only model I am truly looking forward to having on display.... Fantastic model. But I have a lot of learning ahead of me....
WOW! Just WOW!!!! Hi, John! I just happened onto your video and thought I'd give it a look since I've built the Enterprise several times over the years, trying to get my model close to what you're accomplished. I love the Aztecing of the ship. Great Idea and great execution! I've been modeling for over 50 years and I have never come anywhere near to how fabulous your Enterprise looks. And after only 3 years of experience in modeling??? Really??? Hory Chit!! John, you have accomplished in 3 years what some of us haven't come close to in a lifetime. Congratulations! This model is absolutely sensational! Near perfection! Did you ever sit down and try to figure out how many hours you put into the model? Enter it in an IPMS competition and you'll blow away any competition. Again! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Your incredible work on even the smallest of details is one of a kind workmanship. Your setbacks were hartbreaking and yet you persevered. And what a masterpiece you created. Thank you for sharing.
Very fortunate to have friends in the community. She was always the star of the franchise and you've done her proud. Because of Boyd I got back into modeling. There's probably many of us that can say that
The Enterprise refit is the ship i grew up with. Every time I see one of these videos, I so much want to build one... I dont think could never do it well enough without gaining a lot more experience.
Your build is my favorite that I've seen. I love how pearly and shiny white it looks. I copied your paint Scheme more or less when I did my own build, and the only difference is that I use the decals instead of trying to paint on the Aztecs because I'm too lazy and talentless to do something like that. Actually I really like the way the decals looked, and the method I use I managed to get them on without any silvering or wrinkles or anything like that. They look nice and neat and smooth and painted on. Not nearly as fancy as the what you have, but still a nice looking model that I'm very proud of.
Fantastic! Phenomenal work and persistence! I think this is the most beautiful rendition I have seen yet. Your attention to the Aztec paint job is far better than those Aztec decals.
Thankyou! I have the model tucked away from our grandchildren who are, very enthusiastic about getting close *Gulp :) It is great to turn it on every now and again and enjoy her beauty!
I just have to say John what you did was nothing short of astounding,I mean to spend all that time and hard work to truly make a work of art has left me speechless,I recently just bought the same model and hope to be a 10th of as good as yours. If you ever show this off to anyone I am sure they are gonna be jealous as hell of your work.I gotta also say it is very rare for someone to earn my respect but you my friend have. And as Captain James T. Kirk said in the Movie "Lets see whats out there".I am still awestruck by your genius.
Can I just say major props for actually taking the time to level the sections on the kit to be accurate? Ive seen so many models of this kit where its lopsided and it always infuriates me to no end. Great work man!
An absolutely fabulous job! Your attention to detail is simply awesome. I bet your heart stopped when you saw those clamp marks. Oh my gosh, I’m so glad you Were able to deal with that in a positive way. Again, fabulous job!
Amazing job. I'm starting in my own 1/350th Enterprise Refit. I'm doing a lot of these skills for the first time: Aztec Dummy masking 5 color technique, Photo Etch kit, lighting kit. I can only hope my build comes out half as good as yours did. Wish me luck!
Lou`s Masks (aztec dummy) are the real deal. There is nothing better than pulling the final masks and revealing the shimmering pattern, then marking decals....Ahhh, makes me wanna do it again! Have fun with your build and I hope you get a great result!
Just loved watching this. I'm just getting my supplies together to tackle my 1/350 Refit. I bought it in 2010 and just never got around to building it and finally am retired (32 years being part of building REAL spacecraft propulsion systems) and have the time and inclination to do it. I learn from all the videos on RUclips and yours was one of the best "real world" videos I've seen - What a beautiful work of art you created ;>)
3 years?!! Really? Bloody 'ell! Not the time it took of course (8 months, I get that bit, a feat in itself by the way), but your experience overall. Amazing! You, Sir, are an inspiration to any mature adult who has limited experience, an illogical passion for the refit, has also acquired an airbrush, Pearl-Ex powders, Alclad II and just discovered Orbital Drydock masks (lucky old me). This video is firmly downloaded in my research library, hope you don't mind, Steve.
Yes, just over 3 yrs now. Glad you find the slideshow useful. I hope I see an update when you get started on the build! There is a finale video of the model completed on the Base I made on my channel. The quality of the finale is not the best but the second half of it is another slideshow of the making of the Base as well as final pictures of the completed project. In clear HD. Hope you enjoy. Any questions I'd be happy to answer if I can. Thanks for watching!
Impressive build. Your attention to detail and commitment to getting it right are commendable. I have seen many builds where the nacelles are neither level nor positioned correctly above the saucer. You got that right as well. Also nice images to display your work. Great job!
Congratulations on a truly spectacular build. If you've only been at it for 3 years then you are indeed an artist extraordinaire. Ive been struggling with this same build for months and just can't see much progress...This is one of the finest builds I've ever seen..really..and truly.....congrats again. Stay building my friend, use the gift you possess.!
I am in the process of building mine at the moment. This is a great help and inspiration to finish mine. Hope it will be as good. First time building anything like this.
What a fantastic build you just did United Federation Of Modellers. You certainly make this look easy when I can only imagine the amount of patience and determination you had to have in order to have such a successful build as you have in this Enterprise Refit model. Way to go and thanks for sharing and inspiring all of us.
Beautiful model. Love the old uniforms on the crew. It's quite possible they were issued the awful grey ones just before Kirk turned up at the star on TMP.
Well, after studying your pictures and guidance, I posted a lengthier comment that has now disappeared. Your ship looks absolutely magnificent. Polar Lights should send you a case of free model kits in return for all the sales you have delivered, including the one I have bought! Did I understand correctly that you cut your own Aztec masks for the outer ring to repair the clamp damage to the paint?
yes, I printed out an Aztec template from starship modeller website (I think) and cut the repair job masks by hand. They were not perfect but it worked out well. Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching.
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 Thanks for your reply! I am not ready to start, but your experience is really quite helpful. Knowing that such a setback can be managed is reassuring. I am thinking about hand-cutting some practice masks. Or else preparing an Illustrator file and having the local vinyl shop (here in NW Florida) cut some masks to test with (on a smaller spaceship, as you suggested). They say the vinyl they have would be single use only for paint masking.
The most incredible model I have ever seen. To say stunning is an understatement... goodness. The sheer patience, skill and dedication to create this is breath-taking. Thank you for sharing... you are incredible
John Petre Absolutely! I built this kit before when they first came out. While it turned out pretty good, I didn’t do any of the pearlescent coats or wiring up for LED’s. This next build will get every full measure. Your video will be an invaluable resource. Thanks again for posting.
Wonderful. Great work. My model was not that big. I am not sure I want to tackle such a ship. The detail is spectacular. I did notice one thing. You forgot the red and green marker lights and the strobes. Other than that I wish I could do something so beautiful as your Enterprise. Thank you for the show.
I love the old 1701 from the 60's, but really..this version is in a class all in its own. 40 years later, and it STILL looks as badass and believable as ever.
First off- gorgeous work! I've got one old these kits in my backlog, but I need more practice at painting before I feel like I can sit down and do it justice, but this is definitely inspiring! Second off- Man, the Jerry Goldsmith score to that first film just gives me chills.
Hello John. I am impressed by so much accuracy. Your model is simply amazing! You can be proud of your work. I live in France and have a chance to possess this model from POLAR LIGHT acquired on EBay (because untraceable at our home) from now on 5 years and he always rests in his box:-/. The reason is that I imagined practically all the disappointments which you met and it slowed down me in my project. The work which you realized restores me the courage to put me finally in the task and your video was a real happiness to look. Thank you
I know this is a few years later, but this is so incredibly beautiful. Lots of fond memories I have of Star Trek in my family that continue to resonate in all of us today. Your project put together with such loving patience and regard for details is just inspiring. You have earned a subscriber. Thank you so much for sharing your efforts with us.
I’m in the middle of making this exact same model for my ten year old daughter who picked it out at the hobby store. I wish I hadn’t seen this as yours is 1000 times better than mine. I even thought I was doing a pretty good job until I saw yours (I quickly dropped back to amateur land). Well done, you’re a true professional at this! And thank you for sharing all your hard work with the rest of us online. I just hope my daughter doesn’t see this same video :-)
I'm tackling this kit now, also being inspired by Boyd at Trekworks. I'm a little perplexed by your order of operations. I understand the complexity of this kit and all the lighting effects and intricate pearlescent aztec paint scheme can be daunting to the beginner. But I've seen this on other builder's as well. I don't understand going all the way to the finish paint work with the multi color aztecs, BEFORE you assemble anything. Your mishap with the clamps on the saucer causing you to sand off and redo a bunch of work is a prime example of not thinking the process all the way through. However, I also struggled trying to decide how far to go before major sub-assemblies are attached. For example, I completed the saucer first. Total prep, wiring, assembly, putty, sand, prime, paint, decals (in that order.) THEN I completed the secondary hull as a second major sub-assembly with shuttle bay, arboretum, wiring with attached neck and pylons. Attaching the completed and sealed up saucer to the completed secondary hull with neck was a bit of a challenge due to the completed paint work on both parts. I couldn't see any way around this little conundrum. But it went without a hitch with very minimal gap filling and touch up painting along the attachment point. My warp nacelles are the final step I'm working on now. But watching people do the complete and beautiful aztec work on each saucer half BEFORE assembling anything makes me cringe. It just seems like a disaster waiting to happen that is otherwise very easy to avoid.
Very detailed build of this iconic Starship! I especially like the way you cue the music 2 coincide with various levels of the USS Enterprise model's construction. I really like the way you kept as close as you can with your Aztec pattern from the motion picture Enterprise. Very good job!
After 45 years building models, I thought I was accomplished.
But I can’t even begin to hold a candle to your beautiful work.

A lot of the Aztecing I have seen has been way too obvious. You're is so subtle, but perfect. I love it!
Thank you
Fantastic! Phenomenal work and persistence! I think this is the most beautiful rendition I have seen yet. Your attention to the Aztec paint job is far better than those Aztec decals.
Doug Mappin Thankyou Doug. I appreciate your kind words and I am pleased you enjoyed the slideshow.
Beautiful! I'm in awe of your patience and skill. It must feel good to look at that model every day knowing you built it.
Thankyou! I have the model tucked away from our grandchildren who are, very enthusiastic about getting close *Gulp :) It is great to turn it on every now and again and enjoy her beauty!
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 If only we had real-life force fields to protect it :-)
I just have to say John what you did was nothing short of astounding,I mean to spend all that time and hard work to truly make a work of art has left me speechless,I recently just bought the same model and hope to be a 10th of as good as yours. If you ever show this off to anyone I am sure they are gonna be jealous as hell of your work.I gotta also say it is very rare for someone to earn my respect but you my friend have. And as Captain James T. Kirk said in the Movie "Lets see whats out there".I am still awestruck by your genius.
Awesome job !!! I love it.
To quote Indiana Jones "IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!!!"
Im not sure about that, but thank you very much for the kind words! :)
Jeremy James "Once again Jones, what was briefly yours now is mine"
No, it belongs in orbit 👍
I like the 2 answers below, killing myself laughing 😆😅😄😃😂😁😀😉, sounds funny.
Can I just say major props for actually taking the time to level the sections on the kit to be accurate? Ive seen so many models of this kit where its lopsided and it always infuriates me to no end. Great work man!
I have no words, this is one of the best refit models I have seen yet. Just stunning!
An absolutely fabulous job! Your attention to detail is simply awesome.
I bet your heart stopped when you saw those clamp marks. Oh my gosh, I’m so glad you Were able to deal with that in a positive way.
Again, fabulous job!
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There were a couple of heart stopping moments but I got there in the end. 😀
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 Thanks. I appreciate it.
Oh.... so Beautiful.... the most Beautiful Starship ever. Your Work on this Model is breathtaking.
Lee78072 Thank you for your kind comment. I am glad you enjoyed the video.
3 years?!!
This video is firmly downloaded in my research library, hope you don't mind,
Steve.
Great job!
Many thanks!
I’m working up the courage to start this kit. Your work is amazing.
Epic!!! Best build on Enterprise I have ever seen. Incredible!!! 10,000 Thumbs up!!!
i just sat here and watched 35 minutes of still photography. I loved every second of it
Thank you.
Looks like it could warp off your work bench. Great job, thanks for sharing!
Magnificent work… in awe of your attention to detail. Absolute eye candy
@@misterlyle. best of luck with your build!
The most incredible model I have ever seen. To say stunning is an understatement... goodness. The sheer patience, skill and dedication to create this is breath-taking. Thank you for sharing... you are incredible
Without a doubt, one of the best I've seen. And your Aztec work is stunning. Well done, I'm seriously jealous.
Dougall McTavish Thankyou LOL. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Yeah, me too! I've built Enterprise several times and have never come even close to this masterpiece.
Excellent work! I ordered my kit and supplies today. Looking forward to the build.
Nate Taylor Thank you! Good luck with your awesome project.
John Petre Will do! I think I’ll do a video chronicle as well. Can’t wait!
The more videos available the better it helps everyone looking for tips. Go for it! )
John Petre Absolutely! I built this kit before when they first came out. While it turned out pretty good, I didn’t do any of the pearlescent coats or wiring up for LED’s. This next build will get every full measure. Your video will be an invaluable resource. Thanks again for posting.
John Petre I do have a question about the pearlescent. Did you use each color individually or is there a mix ratio for a four colors?
Stunning, simply amazing. Best ship of the line, beats all other incarnations. Live long and prosper!!!
Love it! Great video! The motion picture (1979) best part was when you got to see the new refit! Simply in awe! Well done!
Wonderful. Great work. My model was not that big. I am not sure I want to tackle such a ship. The detail is spectacular. I did notice one thing. You forgot the red and green marker lights and the strobes. Other than that I wish I could do something so beautiful as your Enterprise. Thank you for the show.
These kits , are 200 bucks now , omg , awesome build mate congrats to you :)
Will soon start this very build. Am a little intimidated but look forward to it. She's a beautiful ship and project.
I love the old 1701 from the 60's, but really..this version is in a class all in its own. 40 years later, and it STILL looks as badass and believable as ever.
Absoulty beautiful model ship!!
Thank you!
Great work, looks good. Love the shots you took, especially the finished model!
First off- gorgeous work! I've got one old these kits in my backlog, but I need more practice at painting before I feel like I can sit down and do it justice, but this is definitely inspiring! Second off- Man, the Jerry Goldsmith score to that first film just gives me chills.
The same here
Phenomenal craftmanship. Would love to see you do this again in 1/100 scale :-)
wow! That would be something!! Thanks for watching.
Thank you
Je vous remercie!
I am glad you enjoyed the video. Its great to hear that it might inspire you to build the model yourself. Good luck :)
Truly a labor of love! And the results are beautiful. The Constitution-refit Enterprise is my favorite ship in the Star Trek universe. Amazing job!
Exquisitely done
I know this is a few years later, but this is so incredibly beautiful. Lots of fond memories I have of Star Trek in my family that continue to resonate in all of us today. Your project put together with such loving patience and regard for details is just inspiring. You have earned a subscriber. Thank you so much for sharing your efforts with us.
Thankyou! Glad you enjoyed the slideshow.
