For many years, I have been researching, analyzing, reading and watching boxing fights. I am a fan of combat sports, particularly boxing. I can say that Patterson was incredible, I am very proud of him. He was great and many people still underestimate him today.
Its interesting to watch this fight and see how similar Patterson was to Tyson in terms of head movement, hand placement, and they even punched from the same angles. Interesting piece of history, thanks for sharing.

Both Patterson and Tyson were trained by Cus D'Amato. Light Heavyweight champion Jose Torres, who also sported the peek-a-boo defense, was also trained by D'Amato.
But unlike Mike, he's not really an all offensive,he can outbox when wanted and instead if switching from body to head body to head,he sometimes just spams hits in the head from his speed
Tyson, was clinching or being grabbed when a fight was going the distance. It's nice to see another version of the peek a boo fighter. Patterson seemed as aggressive , but more tactical
Patterson was truly robbed of this decision the ref even admitted he was paid off by Dundee and what about the betters of this fight that got jobbed an failed to collect on their 9to 5 under dog winnings and they had to pay the bookies a sad day for boxing.
I've always liked Patterson; I met him in St. Louis in 1995, when he was just beginning to have memory problems. A shame. But watching this fight, I never saw a fighter of his caliber waste so much time and talent against an opponent he should have blown out in five or less rounds. When you hear that the biggest boxing break Patterson got was that Marciano retired when he did...believe it. No way, Patterson fighting as he did here---and in his three subsequent defenses---would have survived against Marciano...a powerful, perpetual motion, wrecking machine. After this fight, Jackson went to the hospital due to the heavy body punishment he had taken. If Patterson and Marciano had fought, I think Rocky would have sent Floyd to the hospital. It's ironic; Patterson had so much talent...and largely wasted it. Marciano, with his determination....and the help of trainer Charlie Goldman, fully utilized his lesser assets and became a great champion. Patterson is far down the list when he should have been much higher.
The problem with Patterson was that Cus pushed him to be heavy weight champ too soon. He wasn't ready for it. He was smaller and he was too timid. Had he stayed in MW or LHW, he would've destroyed everyone in those divisions. I think had he faced Ray Robinson, Basilio, Fullmer, or whoever, he would've destroyed them.
Marciano retired to avoid facing Floyd after watching him the way he beat Jackson who was fired by Marciano for his sparring partner because of Jackson was already too much for Marciano then. Floyd fought Jackson's fight when they met for the first time just to prove he was just as tough as Jackson who happenend to be his best friend at the time. For this fight,Floyd took it easy on Tommy. Tommy never spoke to him again untill his dying bed when Floyd went to see him when Tommy got hit by a car in early 1980's.

Floyd was told in person by Rocky's brother, Rocky's childhood best buddy that Rocky chose to avoid him and retire undefeated. I was there dinning with them on the same table. Marciano would have been long forgotten if he didn't retire undefeated. It was his biggest pay day by far if he had fought Floyd. He could have retired with millions, but he didn't. Who would retire if you could have been 50-0 with millions ? Rocky wasn't really undefeated either. He has lost to an amateur in an amateur fight after he turned pro. You can easily look it up for this one.
Patterson had a big heart, was determined and courageous. I don't know if he would beat Marciano, probably not, but he was faster and more skilled than Marciano.
Patterson does move similar to Tyson. Cus was an awesome coach and Hurricane hindsight should be happy the coach called it. I feel he was done by round 4-5 and commend his drive, but he wasn't doing anything but surviving and Im happy with end result.

He gave his opponents tough fights. Only a few of us remember Tommy Hurricane Jackson. They say his life ended badly. I'm not so sure about that. Has anybody said Tommy Jackson complained about how his life transpired?

Tommy never spoke to him again after this second meeting of the two. Floyd tried to call him many times, but he wouldn't pick up the phone or never returned a call. 25 years had past in 1982, Tommy was in his dying bed, Floyd was the first one to came to see him. T V ruined boxing. I too remember the fights 3/4 times a week. Because of free it all the local clubs dried up. Why pay when you can see something for free. TV ruined it then abandoned it.
No wonder Patterson was kept away from Williams and Liston as long as he was,…. Good boxer, but he just couldn’t bang with any skilled fighter that was 210 or over, he was really a cruiserweight in an era when there was no division for him to be in. Still, pretty successful overall.

No matter how you dissect his career, you can see on video he didn't have great balance, didnt set up his punches, and had no defense to speak of. Tommy was the opposite of floyd personally I dont doubt they spoke but I find a genuine friendship hard to believe. Floyd quiet and thinks deeply, tommy was impulsive and unpredictable, would pout and walk off interviews if reporters didnt laugh at his jokes. He took pride in his toughness not skill. As sugar ray Leonard said in this sport toughness gets u hurt. Tommy was finished early like all fighters who go in that all in style of fighting

One person a very kind white female teacher made the whole difference in the world for him. There he learned to believe in people as well as in himself. He learned to read,write and speak in there too. You might not see who Tommy was, but Floyd did. They were close. They used to hang out all time outside the boxing gym. The two used to shoot rats in parking lot and all. Joe Louis couldn't speak in front of people either. Don Curry the welterweight of 1980's sounded just like Tommy Jackson too. You don't win over a great one such as Ezzard Charles without some special skills especially when you can't punch like Tommy. He looked sloppy, but his balance was not bad. Marciano looked terrible too. He didn't even have decent size. Marciano's reach was shorter than the little Manny Pacquiao. He was slow and clumsy. His balance was terrible. He had determination,they said. But all good fighters have that too. It was not pretty, but he had the skill to make other guy miss and land his own. He hit pretty hard for his size. Tommy couldn't hit hard, but he makes you fight his fight and it takes skills, not just determination or conditioning. BTW Jimmy Slade did the same to Floyd after they fought and Jimmy was his close friend too. There's another thing. Floyd had his first several amateur boxing matches when he was in Wiltwyck School for boys in upstate NY. Years later he went to a gym in NYC with his older brothers Frank and Billy and Frank Lavelle was the one who started to train Floyd there. Not Cus D'Amato. Cus was only a manager, never a trainer. People with no ring experience of their own inside the boxing ring are not capable of trainig top fighters,period. You can never teach a top pianist when you can't even play piano. Then how can someone who never box for himself can teach a great pugilist ? The media always lie and people believe only what they want to hear.

This Jackson was a damned tough fellow. His life ended saddly : shinning shoes, driving taxi, died some months following a car crash at 50.
