Maxim was 32 years old at time of this fight . . . and had just lost the Light Heavyweight title to Archie Moore the year before. By this date he already had 3 fights with Moore (0-3), 3 fights with Jersey Joe Walcott (2-1), 4 fights with Ezzard Charles (0-4), and a famous win against Sugar Ray Robinson. This was the 19-year old Patterson's 14th pro fight . . .
I have more rounds of the fight (from another camera angle) which Floyd dominated but unfortunately the video file is damaged and cannot be uploaded. I'll try to fix it somehow.
I think Cus had a lot of faith in Patterson's abilities as a light heavyweight against fighters of the same size (for example Moore and Maxim) but not so much against the big heavyweights.
Maxim was still a good, solid fighter. Excellent jab (though my father thought it was ludicrous to compare it to a maxim gun). Also a solid right hand, especially inside with the uppercut. Cus must have had a lot of confidence in Floyd to match him so tough so early in his career. Though some deny this here, Floyd does look smaller than Maxim. At 168 he's a muscular but still slender kid with more filling out to do-- nowadays a "super-middleweight." Excellent bout and since there is only half the bout here, it's hard to tell if it really was a bad decision.
Neonleon is full of it. Machen and Folley were the number one contenders while Patterson fought amateur Pete Rademacher, Brian London, Roy Harris, Tom McNeely etc. Patterson never DEFENDED HIS TITLE against Machen, The fight they did have later was of no significance, since both were well past their primes. Cus refused to let Patterson fight his number one contenders and that stunk up all of boxing. Later Patterson dumped a protesting D'Amato in order to fight Liston.
@TheNickoda a bit harsh i think.Patterson had a cautious manager.not a cautious style.he had a quite exciting style.and Floyd himself never ducked anybody. He gave Liston a rematch for fuxsake!!! and fell out with his manager to do so.THAT is a fact. and he certainly did have power ..he just happened to be a small heavyweight
YO, MAXIM WON BUT CLOSE FIGHT.REASONS IDIOT RING WRITERS GAVE IT TO FLOYD IS CUZ OF HIS IMPRESIV SPEED BUT FROM CLOSE FP DIDNT MIX LONG ENOUGH.MAXIM LIKE BORIN but great klichkos knew how to tie u up.thats dirty but good tactic.that suk.but like mayweather, blokin punches with forearm is briliant defense.only in fukd up popularity losin boxin such necesity is not alowed but floyd s shoulder punch stopper helps!
From the rounds I see here, looks like Floyd should have been the clear winner. Just add this to the list -Floyd got gypped out of both Quarry fights, and was solidly ahead of Ali on points in their 1972 rematch until that bullshit stoppage.
Maxim won on points. His jab was in Floyd's face continually, scoring points. Throwing a punch is not the same as landing a punch. Patterson missed most of his punches.
I see nothing unfair or controversial in the decision. One guy is flashier but the other is much more consistent and experienced. It was a good fight but the decision was fair.
marcxopoco Angelo Dundee, Ali's cornerman, admitted later that he deliberately ripped a hole in Ali's glove to stall for time. Dirty trick, but it worked and gave Ali another minute or so to regain his senses.
Superb! Are we the only idiots in the entire world who find this stuff fascinating? The rest of the world gets the same ALI ALI ALI crap jammed down their throats. Why isn't there a BOXING NETWORK with old fight films 24 x 7 x 365? There's enough footage to show nonstop for 2 years without repeating anything!!!
Floyd Patterson vs Bernard Hopkins @ light heavy - that would've been an interesting fight and I could see it going either way. I could see the younger, faster and hard to hit Patterson outworking Hopkins to a decision but I could also see the much more experienced Hopkins somehow finding a way to pull off a decision win as well. Either way, it would be both a close and entertaining fight.
They only show the best rounds for Patterson, and even these were close. Maxim wins on the inside. A lot of people don't recognize that. Patterson wins more and cleaner on the outside, but is dominated on the inside work. Maxim also uses his jab well, but he wins this fight on the inside.
I must give kudos to mayweather. Not for chickenin out from manny but for great forearms defense which should b legal. 2much fukin limitations.no wonder mma thrivin boxin goin down.good ridance.hand back slap i c nothin wrong with it.good tactic. Rounds should b 301min breax 61 second at least is always lost. Whats the poin in fina round to touch gloves n lose more seconds!? What horseshit idiotic metod!
Cus D'Amato made a mistake putting Patterson at this stage in with Maxim. Maxim won all the way. The commentator is a disgusting shill for Patterson. Later D'Amato refused to let Patterson defend his title against the two most worthy challengers, Eddie Machen and Zora Folley, because both were excellent boxers. D'Amato learned his lesson in the Maxim fight.
Himawalin Cat how the fuck is he racist? Don’t see anything racist he posted holy shit man I’m Latino mixed w black and I don’t do that shit. and you people scream racism at everything, bet your white too, focus on you self let us worry bout racism
+Macgrowens Valdes ''up and down style'' is called bobbing and weaving, Manny Pacquiao uses it very effectively today and became a record 8 division world champion because of it. Patterson was taught the style by Cus DAmato who invented the ''peak-a-boo'' defense, same trainer of legend Mike Tyson

Patterson did not have enough experience to fight Maxim at this point in his career
Wow thanks for the information sir.Great fighter.
Patterson got ROBBED
Joey Maxim looks a bit like Max Schmeling.

Was that Cus photobombing when the announcer raised Joey's hand?Lol
There were 12 boxing reporters on the ringside and ALL 12 of them voted for Floyd as the winner of this fight.
Bullshite
One wonders what fight they were watching ?
what an old treasure of a film. Thanks again, Great A--u truly r great
Two of the great.. I would have thought that Floyd would have won this... He was very young though.
Maxim was a tremendous fighter.
Maxim, a former Light Heavyweight Champion, weighed in at 9lbs heavier than Floyd Patterson, a future Heavyweight Champion...
Don't look like though. Thanks for the information sir
@TheGreatA I'd love to see that extra footage. What I've seen here suggests a virtually even contest, in my opinion.
This fight: June 7th 1954 at Eastern Parkway Arena Brooklyn, New York . . .
Under 200 pound fighters Cus was fine with. It was Liston that Cus told Patterson to avoid.
Not a bad scrap. Maxim fought more consistently, Floyd in spurts so the decision seems fair.

Good fight Joey!🥊

Maxim clearly on the decline after this. Lost 8 of 10 fights and his last six in a row. Retired.

Because he was a great fighter.
Fair bout but maxim held2much. That ll never make u great boxer2remember!

@Wheelin Floyd was not ahead of Ali in 72 look up the score card!
Yes that is true his back went in first Ali fight otherwise he would have done good
@@antoniokasto4293 Had Floyd been healthy against Ali in 1965, that might have been Ali's most competitive pre-Joe Frazier fight.
He got robbed against Jimmy Ellis too
Maxim won on points. His jab was in Floyd's face continually, scoring points.
Throwing a punch is not the same as landing a punch.
Patterson missed most of his punches.
Sound like you can't tell which landed and which missed.
@@himawalincat9350 He's right. Maxim out boxed him.

maxim means biz
Patterson didn't throw enough punches
Small 185 pound heavyweight Henry Cooper knocked Ali down.
And Ali needed extra time between rounds before he could continue.
IMHO Joe Louis, Wladamir Klitschko and Larry Holmes were greater than Ali in the ring.
marcxopoco Angelo Dundee, Ali's cornerman, admitted later that he deliberately ripped a hole in Ali's glove to stall for time. Dirty trick, but it worked and gave Ali another minute or so to regain his senses.
@@robinsonray6766 Please, did you just start following boxing recently?
no way, look from close, referee was fair guy goldstein gave closest decision but still to maxim!
reffere was soo stubit, for me patterson won unammious decision

How did that happen (?)

Mack Valdes ur stupid
Patterson’s trainer was Cus d’Amato, who taught a similar bobbing-and weaving-style years later to a guy named Mike Tyson, maybe you’ve heard of him.
