Cannot think of anyone else to play Cleopatra than Elizabeth Taylor. She commands the screen. She is Queen of Egypt. She commands all men and Richard Burton knows this. He falls madly deeply in love with her.... the rest is history.....

Seems Cleopatra knew what Octavian was plotting ahead of everyone else and she knew he’d alienate Egypt from possible allies and conquer it. Pity she had to rely on Anthony. She had a fighting chance had she had more control over the military.
...or picked another Roman general as an ally. She was supposedly very intelligent just not claivoyant or psychic;, even though she condsidered herself the embodiment of the Goddess ISIS.
Richard Burton was by far the greatest of thespian orators ever produced from across the pond....Sir Laurence, Sir Sean Connery, Sir John Gielgud, Sir Anthony Hopkins....get back. Yeah, I said it...!

Dramatic license more than likely, but I don't find it unbelievable that he would so, as he was enthralled with Cleopatra and when one is facing an infuriated paramour with her level of at least regional power, prestige and mystique, one can do things unexpected of their own powerful position.

Burton was 7 years older than Taylor, whereas Mark Antony was 14 years older than Cleo. More suitable actors would have been William Holden, John Forsythe, Craig Stevens, Cameron Mitchell, Ben Johnson, or Robert Preston. (Rod Taylor was a dead ringer for the ancient bust of Antony, but he was too young.)
The publicity surrounding their steamy "scandalous" adulterous affair in Italy was worth far more to the film than any of the other actors named. In fact, Burton was not the first choice for Marc Antony. He replaced the actor Stephen Boyd who originally was given the role. Give it up -It was fate, kismet, karma, or whatever...and the rest is movie history... (BTW-Rex Harrison also replaced Peter Finch as Caesar and Liz Taylor was not the first choice to play Cleo) Go figure..
Hi, Lukas..all you say is true..but I wasn't thinking of Cleopatra necessarily. Rather her Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, her Virginia..there are others. Put her voice against Richard's rich voice, or her play against Katherine Hepburn and her voice seems wanting. She was so beautiful, perhaps she depended on that beauty to make for her weak voice...Or perhaps some of the roles she chose were inappropriate for her as she was not classicly trained. Can you imagine her, for instance, with that voice in Lion in Winter as Katherine. It would have been a joke. Or would it have been to much for a voice like Olivia de Haviland's to come our of her? I wonder.
I am Egyptian, A COPTIC CHRISTIAN EGYPTIAN, I shout that out loud because we are the most pure blooded Egyptians out there and that's not only my opinion that's what Egyptologists, Historians and Scientists also agreed on , and I tell you that every word that Bassem Youssef said is right and I totally agree with him. Yes Egypt had lots of mixed cultures throughout its history like for example: Greeks, Romans and Arabs, but the Egyptian blood didn't mix and change that much and that's because for centuries we Egyptians had a golden tradition rule to marry our cousins, and that tradition is still present until now especially in Upper Egypt(from Assiut to Aswan), Although that tradition seems silly and bad from a scientific biological point of view, but that doesn't matter, silly or not we kept that tradition of marrying our cousins for centuries and that helped us to preserve our pure Egyptian blood not mixed as long as we could, and the result is what you see now and that is Modern Egyptians looks typical to their Ancient Egyptian Ancestors, just look at my skin color and Bassem Youssef's skin color we are almost the same although he is a Muslim who was born and lived in Cairo and I am a Coptic Christian who was born and lived in Luxor and there is almost a 1000 km distance between us, doesn't that tell you a thing or two about who Ancient Egyptians were and what they looked like? With all due respect for all the Black people and all the other ethnicities out there, but we Egyptians are special very special, WE ARE NOT Black or White or Yellow, Not Europeans or Africans or Asians, Not Assyrians or Persians or Israelites or Nubians or Greeks or Romans or Arabs or French or Italians or Germans or British or Turkish or Ukrainians, Not Middle Easterners or Caucasians or Mediterraneans or Levants or Amazigh or Berbers or even North Africans. @Dindo Nuffin LOL, I'm not the only one to have a problem with her voice: www.datalounge.com/thread/20422244-liz-taylor-had-a-pretty-grating-voice-didn-t-she-
Elizabeth relied on her stunning beauty but imagine had she taken the time to have voice training. Think of, for instance, Olivia de Havilland with her voice rich and full, still beautiful at 100 years of age, so expressive in My Cousin Rachel and Richard Burton with his glorious voice. But, she didn't invest the time and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf were not nearly what they could have been. Oh, well, she was a great philanthropist, trained voice or not.
Two things: 1. Cleopatra is angry at Anthony for breaking his promise to marry her so it wouldn’t make sense for her to sound soft and cooing like the bedroom scene with Julius Caesar. 2. She only sounds shrill and piercing when she raises her voice and it works well for playing feisty and strong willed characters like Cleopatra, Martha, Katharina and Maggie.
@@lukasmiller486 I agree with your analysis 100%. I don't find her voice shrill; she's pissed at Anthony, and rightfully so. He made a mess of things trying to parlay with Octavian when he would have been wiser to seek Cleopatra's shrewd advice. I actually like how her voice quivers/trembles as it shows real emotions to me.
I waited 40 years to finally watch this film only to discover it's laughably miscast with Taylor. Her speaking voice is horrible. Didn;t they ever give their actresses voice coaching back then?
