I bought this new in 2013 8/256. Still using it. I use it exactly how you mentioned. I only started using it everyday the last 3 years for work. The only problem I had with it was the speaker. But, with bluetooth speakers it was an easy work around. I love that I don’t need any external hubs to connect it to a monitor, keyboard, mouse and backup disk. Currently, i do have the out of memory. I close down any unneccessary apps.

Have the mid 2015 Retina 15 inch MBP with 16 gb of DDR3 Ram and I7 on Mojave. Held out upgrading when Mac introduced the 2016 forward USB C only MBP Lines and use it as a daily driver and kept it in great shape.
It can do 4k 60 fps playback on youtube for my monitor, basic 4k video editing, music production and all internet based tasks. Having the 16 GB of Ram helps keep it relevant.
Only now about to upgrade to a M1 Pro 16 inch MBP as this line now has the card reader, HDMI and mag safe. I"ll accept the compromise considering no USB type A. Will still use the 2015 MBP for music stuff. It was worth every penny.

The battery in it charges, but it drains and in about two hours when taken off the charger. Otherwise, it runs fine, is in great physical condition as whoever owned it took good care of it. I use it to just do basic internet stuff, writing, and playing the occasional game, watching videos and movies, and other light usage. It’s still a pretty sweet machine for its age. Just for info there won’t be any “new”, just used. But check the seller and the condition. They can be had for 200-250usd easily.

You could do work on this with pixelmator and use a half decent video editor.
The cpu is snappy enough for on the go work. But I’d say as a backup to a main computer. Perhaps search RUclips for this laptop and add final cut or other software you like and see what others say too.
I mostly use coding and networking software. With little graphics too.
      No video editing.
