    Funny how Rock of Ages never appears on any greatest albums lists. It's top 5 for me, has the best versions of many of The Band's songs.

    I was there. They played five encores and the audience wouldn't leave until the guys came out in their winter coats carrying their instruments out the stage exit door.

    IMHO the best rock n rollers to take
    the stage , ever . Just glad i was able to see this line up 3 times and w/dylan 74 before it ended in 76. Thank the Lord i walked the earth when they were together as well as when Jerry was here . They were giants THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

    Tragic that there's so little footage of these shows. Nowadays everything gets filmed, whether it's any good or not, yet we have classic tv shows from the 60s and 70s being wiped, and historic gigs like these with barely a visual record of them.

      Brendan Jabbers I know it's sad that there's hardly any footage of The Band in its prime. Hardly any Woodstock footage either. The majority of performances from Festival Express were filmed, they just haven't been properly released.

      @@paschkefan the Festival Express shows had my absolute favorite performance of Chest Fever. There used to be a video on youtube, but its since been removed. Damn shame. At least we have what we have, though.

      My friend used to party with folks like Rick Danko and Gary Busey in his apartment up in North Beach, S.F. He did road managing for many of the 60s bands down in the Bay area. Before I knew him.

      I suspect these visuals don't go with the sound. There's a real aversion to showing who's singing (I don't think there's a single second of Levon singing) and we don't see any crowd. I wonder if the "video" as it would now be called was recorded later?

      They played a 4 show run at the Academy of Music, NYC in 1971 and some tracks from the shows were released back then as the album Rock of Ages and a couple of years ago they released a 4 CD/1 DVD box set (Live at the Academy of Music) of the whole thing. From the looks of it only a couple songs were filmed though which is too bad.

      A great concert hall on 14th st. In Manhattan, later known as the Palladium. Rock and Roll Animal also recorded there. Demolished in 1998 for NYU dorms.

      Everyone expresses differently. Levon always has a sort of grumpy look about him - I think it helps his playing and singing to be slightly on the edge.

    Rick, unfortunately, looks strung out and at his worst here. They're a favorite band but this isn't one of their best efforts..imo. This is a great song.. but the rousing {much faster} rendition... that Scorsese foolishly cut from The Last Waltz..was their best song of that epic night.

      Franz Farmer agreed. He's been much worse. Rick looks and sounds plain awful at the Wembley 1974 show doing chest fever. That video is on RUclips. I've always thought that Rick sounds good at the academy shows. Great bass playing too.

      No Rick may be laid back a bit on this but not strung out! He may know if a recorded concert for an album and is being a bit careful...And on the record his singing and playing are great and Richards' piano playing is dynamite
