dear gawd NO!!! NONONONONONO... Never put leather sneakers/trainers/running shoes in a washer. That "thing" is called an agitator & leaving laces in is a sure fire way to cause problems with your machine's transmission. Also; you should ALWAYS fill a washing machine & put the soap in before putting your laundry in it, otherwise, the articles may not move freely about & will stay dirty. As for those white Nikes; washing them with dark shoes (esp. those black leather ones as the dye will bleed) & dark laundry is beyond dumb! Want them to be white again??? Fill machine with HOT water; put in detergent, OxyClean & Tide Boost (arm & hammer detergent is cheap & mostly water; I prefer Tide or Gain) wash, then run another cycle with a touch of bleach! Do not use OxyClean & bleach together!!! I know most guys do NOT read instructions (such as those right on the lid of the washing machine), nor listen to them, esp. concerning laundry & that is why your clothes come out looking dingy & worn. Separate colors, fill machine & add soap & asst'd cleaning aids BEFORE adding laundry (hot for whites/lights & super grungy colors, warm for colors & filthy dirty darks, cold for dark) & by all means; remove laces, ribbons, strings, etc. (or place these items in a garment bag so they don't wrap around the agitator or other items) & read the tags on the items you are going to wash if unsure if it can handle a full speed wash or needs to be on gentle cycle. Another thing you bachelors may find helpful; never put your jeans in the dryer! It wrecks the cotton & will have them wear out & lose their color sooner than those air dried. Leather sneakers are best cleaned with a cloth & soft toothbrush with Murphy's Oil Soap & then wiped with mineral oil before & after air drying. Perhaps this was a TL;DR wall of text but I am hoping someone will find this useful...

I did this 30 minutes ago with 2 pairs of sneakers and one pair's soles got completely unglued and the other pair slightly unglued >:/ I shoud've put it on delicate wash AND on the shortest cycle possible, or just done it by hand.
You forgot to put shoes in a pillow case to stop them getting tangled damage the drum, add shoes in a pillow case trust me before putting them in. Also wrap in thin towel then pillow case. It’s safer to use regular wash not delicate if u use this method. White is safest colour and material that doesn’t draw out colour.
I've washed laces individually in the sink with some liquid dishwashing soap. Just rub them together between your hands like you're washing your hands and they'll get very clean. Simple.

Michael Freeman try throwing your shoes in the freezer overnight right after they come out of the washer. Since they are wet all the way through, the freezing temp should kill the bacteria causing the smell. Doesn't always work but may.

i heard using a cap full of dawn dishwasher soap helps get them looking brand new compared to washer soap.
