This was when Benny wasn't even yet 39. I think he was already wearing a toupee. On radio, they joked for years about his hairpiece, but when the TV days started, those jokes stopped.
Funny when Jack Benny holds onto her hands. He always did the same thing on his TV show whenever he had a young performer such as Ann Margaret or Darla Hood appear. It's creepy here when he was in his late thirties but a lot creepier when he was in his late sixties or early seventies! He looked like he was slobbering over them so much he needed a bib to keep his shirt dry from all the drooling... lol
This might be the youngest I've ever seen jack benny, and about the "mean look" at 1:05 I believe it was intentional, the song is called "mean to me" so.
I discovered this song this week while watching a movie in an animation studies class I'm taking this semester. The version I heard was recorded in the studio with Annette Hanshaw on vocals. She sounded beautiful and her the song is unforgettable. The name of the movie is Sita Sings the Blues and Ms. Hanshaw's songs are featured throughout this animated film.
Her and Mr. Benny seem have some really strange dynamics... They’re holding hands and being very physical, then he just pushes her away and she looks upset. Wonder what else was going on there.
This is not "an Annette Hanshaw hit". She happened to make a record of it (under the pseudonym of "Gay Ellis)", but she wouldn't have been considered particularly closely associated with it .
I think we can clearly see this was supposed to be part of a comedy show making fun of an overtpitch singing by the last bit of the video. A really funny one though.
I became aware of this clip some time ago. At the time there was consternation as of the identity of Babe Blake . Has it been cleared up . Also I don’t think any more clips of her are available on RUclips , I tried unsuccessfully to identify who she actually was , any suggestions ?
I love this "one hit wonder" gal, Babe Blake! I suppose she was an LA local, sang in her Helen Kane style on stage at the Orpheum Theatre when Jack Benny was there, working as the master of ceremonies. When MGM hired Jack to introduce the acts in their big talking picture musical "Hollywood Revue of 1929", he recalled Babe Blake's act from the Orpheum program and had MGM give her a talking screen test, and this song and patter was the result! Unfortunately her number was cut out of the final print. The stunning Art Deco set in her clip was also filmed in a spooky Halloween number, "Lon Chaney's Gunna Get You" with dancers in ghoulish costumes. THAT number stayed in the film, (to promote MGM's horror film star, Lon Chaney) but Babe's adorable baby voice song "Mean To Me" didn't make the cut. Her footage did end up on the screen. The famous song writers and Babe appeared in a short that was filmed entirely on this striking Hollywood Revue set. I don't know of any more film work. Perhaps just being seen in a big budget talkie was enough to satisfy her mother's stage ambitions for her!
I'd guess that the big Betty Boop fad gave her a chance at stardom, but just being another Betty Boop spinoff wasn't enough. There must have been hundreds of girls, young and old , doing baby voice acts on radio and stage at that time, so perhaps Miss Blake just got lost in the bunch of them.

Why do I want to cry watching this? It is so sweet and BEAUTIFUL!
Wow! That ART DECO set is BEAUTIFUL!
The voice of "Betty Boop"...
I LOVE THIS!
What a deliciously looking set!
afro medve - I know right? *Art Deco* is THE COOLEST looking design style! I love this era because it's when Art Deco was at its peak!
¡¡¡Bravo!!!
¡Beautiful!
🌹💐
Fabulous!

Maybe a rival for Helen Kane but not for Annette and her variety of voices and styles!
Her voice is reminiscent of Ruth Etting
Not really
😂😂😂😅😅😅
¡Esa carita!...
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
handsome jack benny:)
"Your MOTHER????" Even early Benny was great.
what kinda vid title is "Annette Hanshaw rival " ????? Put Babe's name in the title, eh ?????!
Sita Sings the Blues brought me here.
Her voice in this is produced with the fashionable Bronx accent and the tinny nasal tone. She has such a warm, sweet voice, but not here.

The gag is that he just found out she's underage (I'm here with my mother).
ThePookosh Oh so it was just a gag?
It's a performance. It's a joke. Listen to the lyrics. I can't tell if you're joking. You know that this was a show. Right?
@@ThePookosh So what if she was underage! He was only holding her hand!
🤣🤣🤣🤤🤤🤤👍👍👍
Jack started in radio in 1932.
She could sure understudy Helen Kane.

She sounds more like betty boop , right ?
Are you kidding!?! ...this woman is nowhere near Annett Henshaw
curlywolfone I agree. Helen kane's rival yes but not Annettes.
Agreed!
and where are you?

Geez, don't be mean to her

Bro why does she sound 5 years old 💀
popular style of singing back then. she has other songs where she sounds normal
i just trout i’d tell you tone correct that that is not Annette hanshaw but
Helen Kane
This isn't Annette.
@Neocortex Supernova The title says she is Annette’s rival
Did anyone else notice that nasty look at 1:05?!
Yes, she have him a nasty look, but I don't think it was intentional. I think she was just nervous.
Does she sing any other songs?
no, her mother wouldn't let her
Whoever sabotaged this and some other videos is a low down dirty rat.
Hey now, it's not a James Cagney film!
This would be so wonderful if somehow that ticking sound could be removed. :( please let me know when it's fixed. Sure is a lovely clip! Xo
Great video , but is this loud clicking in the video or a youtube glitch.
The crackling noise?? It's from 1929. It was made with 1920's equipment. That's what the audio sounds like.
she is not Annette Hanshaw ....
this is awesome cuz she is good but awful because the creepazoid factor is off the charts wtf
Annette did it better!
Not Henshaw. Nice try.
Benny is creapy.
Seems like the start of a classic 30s porn movie
Annette Hanshaw sings it better... This isn't her.
