These old songs are the best and Ruth was a really good singer. I used to hear my mom sing these songs around the house ❤❤❤❤❤❤

AYYYYYYYYYYY. when i visted america there was this sweeties old lady that bought me ice cream once, she kept singing the words "your mean to me, whyyyy must you be mean to me..." whenever I made a joke about her or anyone in the store lol, and she would keep singing for a solid 30-40 seconds. i heard from her son a few months ago by facebook that she passed away. there was like 2 other songs she would sing but hay at least now I know a song she was singing

I just watched the movie with Doris Day and wondered what Ruth really sounded like. Thank you for posting this!

Doris Day gave a great performance in "Love Me Or Leave Me," but she didn't look or sing anything like Ruth Etting.

My fave musical time period. The 30s Great music, really cool films, great singers. My favourite being Mr Crosby. His 30s songs were outstanding.

Now I've heard *three* versions of this song, and they are all irreplaceable. Etting, Day, and Ella Fitzgerald.

Oooh…you missed Billie Holliday and Sarah Vaughan and my favorite of all, Dean Martin!! I’m sure there are probably many renditions of it as it was a very popular song.

Yes, it was restored by the Library of Congress in 1990, but still a lovely visual to accompany Ruth Etting's rendition of mean to me.
The music is by Fred E. Ahlert and the lyrics are by Roy Turk, published in 1929.
Hit versions that year were by Ruth Etting and by Helen Morgan. Ben Bernie and the Hotel Roosevelt Orchestra also recorded possibly the first male version in February of 1929 with vocals by Scrappy Albert.

Yes, it is. It is not one of her best films, even though she won an Oscar for her performance. It's tragic that her later life was so sad.
