I have used this lens for years on my X-T2 and absolutely love it. When I scroll through my photos on the computer, I can easily pick out the ones I have shot with this lens - not sure why exactly, but they have a different look to them. I think there is a bit more contrast and the colors render beautifully.
This video made me buy it. I was just curious. They are hard to come by, even in Germany. There are almost no offers - I paid 430€ for a mint condition lense. It looks a little bit out of place on a Fuji and might be a better fit in a Sony… but that’s also interesting. Thanks for the recommendation!
Yeah the 33 1.4 is indeed optically perfect, but it lacks the character the 35 1.4 or this 32 1.8 have which makes me not very interested in it sadly. I love the 18 1.4 WR for how perfect it is but with a 50mm equivalent lens I love a bit of character and this Zeiss lens just has so much of it!

I have this on my XT5 as a hobbyist, mostly street and casual outdoor portraits - my biggest issue, and why I don't regularly make it a walk around, is the aperture ring. I really wish it was clicky and a bit more sticky; I'm constantly moving the aperture by accident.
I finally got to use a zeiss 21mm f2.8 distagon lens on my d700 recently. Mind blown at how good the rendering is. At first I was hoping it had better sunstars for landscape but I love the flare it produces. It’s almost cinematic at times. What a beautiful lens it is.

Hey Matthew, like you I am a big admirer of this lense. Have been using it on XT2 / 3 etc. The other day I upgraded to a XT5. The tragic thing is, this very lense does not fit on my new XT5 - yet the other Zeiss (50 macro) fits perfectly. The Zeiss guy I connected with says there is a problem fitting this on a XT5 and XH2. Have you heard of any one else complaining about this problem ? I see you are using it on your XT5. Would appreciate any feedback possible. The 32 is my absolute favourite.

Hi Matthew, new follower and new to the FujiFilm system. I was wondering if you have tried and compared this lens to the XF 33mm f.14. If yes, how do you compare the 2? Just want your thoughts about this. Many thanks!
Hey! I haven’t tested the new 33 out but I have the 18 so the AF performance definitely would be much better on the 33, these three new primes are the best focusing lenses on the Fuji system. It’ll be weather sealed and probably sharper as well, but it won’t have the unique Planar characteristics that make the Touit as special as it is. It’s really a “perfect” lens so if that’s what youre after it’s a good one to go for!
@@rudermanphoto thank you! I already bought the Zeiss actually. I had the XF 35mm F2 and ended up returning it after I saw your video and doing a bit more research. Then I came across the XF 33mm F1.4 reviews and was wondering if I made a mistake. If the Zeiss made you switch to Fuji, that says quite a lot about the Zeiss Touit.
Hi , great video and incredible images . I’ve previously read that these Zeiss lenses have to be sent back to Zeiss service centre for any firmware upgrades , is this still relevant . Cheers ,liked and subscribed.
Thank you! No, you don’t need to send this lens anywhere to update its firmware, the latest firmware on Zeiss’s website is 1.03 and it installs the same way as you would any other firmware update on a Fuji camera with an SD card.

@@EddyMaynard Yes it most certainly is! This lens would be divine on the X-Pro 3! When making this video I was reminiscing on just how nice the X-Pro 2 was to shoot even if its AF wasn't all that great. Might need to buy an X-Pro 3 in the future, that titanium body speaks to me haha
Couldn't agree more mate, a special lens indeed. It is astonishing how in conversations surrounding a recommended 33mm lens for X Mount system that this glass is never suggested. I think one of the reasons Zeiss stopped with the Touit line is that basically Fuji owners are not that clued up to rendering traits (or care). They fall for the old tricks, f stop and megapixels. A real shame. I think it is not Zeiss's fault here but likely the market.
I think it’s high initial price probably put people off, especially with on paper being 1.8 vs 1.4 for like $400-500 more then the Fuji 35 1.4, and with the cult like status of the Fuji 35 1.4 people just tend to dismiss the Zeiss as a second rate option. Some people also don’t enjoy the unique bokeh characteristics and want something a bit more creamy which I think the 35 1.4 definitely achieves, hence why I think both lenses have their place. Either way, I’m glad that nowadays they’re the same price so the choice is much more difficult then it was in 2013!
fuji useres get fujis for the colors and how the cameras look, sony users get sony for quality, thats why Zeiss feels more at home partnering with sony
@@villegas24 Yeh, the market feels different. I've shot many brands and sensor sizes and frequent fuji forums a lot and I would say how the camera looks, the colours it produce are high up on the list of comments. When it comes to IQ a lot of them are not really knowing what they are talking about.
I think it's more the initial price. The XF 35mm f1.4 is still appreciated a lot due to it's "rendering traits" next to the newer and clinical 33mm f1.4. That's why Fuji is still producing it.
@@rudermanphoto awesome and thanks for your quick reply! Just recently discovered your channel and will start watching them! Already subscribed as well! Keep up the good 👍 work!
It’s not too bad for video, but its AF is fairly noisy and the speed isn’t quite as fast as modern LM lenses. If you use it in manual focus mode it can be a great lens for B roll and I have used it for quite a bit of B-roll in my RUclips videos though!
@@sameerpradhan768both great choices, I use a 23 f2 and the 32 1.8 as my go to travel kit and I find they compliment each other nicely, but a pretty standard dual prime setup for a lot of people is a 35/85 combo so just up to you to decide what works for you!
Wasn't this designed & manufactured by Tamron, same as the other Zeiss-branded AF lenses? Pretty sure Tamron holds all the design patents for them. Doesn't make it a bad lens, of course!
I haven’t read anything that suggests that, Zeiss manufacturers plenty of their manual focus lenses in Japan like their M Mount lenses too. If Tamron did actually manufacture it I’d be pretty surprised cause there’s absolutely no info online regarding that - but maybe I didn’t look hard enough!
@@rudermanphoto I believe all the Zeiss Batis & Touit AF lenses are designed & manufactured by Tamrom, with Zeiss coatings. There are many known examples of these lens designs within Tamron patents, if you poke in google for search terms like [zeiss batis tamron patent] you will get a good number of results. The manual focus Zeiss ZE/ZF/Milvus/OTUS/Loxia lenses are Zeiss designs but manufactured by Cosina.
From reading reviews I imagine the 33 will be much more “perfect”, if you want more character in your portraits you’ll love the Zeiss but if you want the best autofocus and weather sealing and just overall perfection stick with the 33
I always want the 3D look, but without the nervous bokeh but idk if that's possible, and at this point I'm afraid to ask because I think the answer will be Leica lenses. 😂
Borrow the XF33, IMHO it has what you're looking for. The people that own one mention the pleasing character, those that don't accuse of being sterile. 🤷♂
Could timing. When I saw this lens I kept looking, turned away and keep looking. I haven't picked it up yet but the build of it keeps calling and the images I've seen. Man...
Whilst I wasn't disappointed by this lens, I did recently sell it after having it for a good while ( also after watching GxAce's video ). The rendering was a hit and miss for me. Sometimes it could really deliver results I loved but sometimes something just wasn't to my liking. Especially in darker situations but that was likely boosted by the poorer AF performance. The biggest issue though was the rubberised controls. It's a dust magnet and the aperture ring is also way too loose. At least on my copy where I was constantly changing the aperture by accident. I don't hate or even dislike the lens but I also have the Fuji 35mm f2 and that was a better fit for my needs. Maybe if I shot more portraits instead of events and the like then the choice would go the other way :)
I have the 35 f2 as well, it’s definitely got its advantages over the Zeiss - notably its AF performance thanks to the LM motors is awesome, I find it renders like the 35 1.4 did too, super smooth and nice bokeh - but it lacks that pop and wow factor the Zeiss delivers 85% of the time so I don’t really use it all that much. It was half the price though and weather sealed too so definitely an excellent value choice especially if you need critical AF performance!
This lens was graded poorly by many reviewers back in the day. It was the second lens I bought for my XE1. I got a practically new Touit untouched in the box for $340 from eBay. I thought it was a great lens. It was stolen at the start of the pandemic. You cannot get it at that price anymore.
This is still one of the best lenses for Fuji and despite selling quite a bit of my Fuji kit to transition to L mount I’m still holding onto the Touit because I will never ever sell it, it’s just amazing!!

So happy to hear! I hope you love it as much as I do!!
From many of the comments, the lens can be used with the X-T2. Can the lens be used on the X-E2 as well?
This lens can be used on any XF mount Fuji camera, so yes it’ll work great on the X-E2 as well!
@@rudermanphoto Many thanks
Fantastic lens, a bit loud when focusing but it delivers on every Fuji sensor. Cheers
They stopped making it probably because the 35mmF2 and F1.4 were very competitive, and now there's the new 33 F1.4 is even crazier.
Would be keen to see a bid on finding camera and lens bargains for Aussies 🙏
Most of the content on this is for UK and US enthusiasts
Great idea! I’ll work on that!
interesting video, id never heard of this lens before!
also, some really nice shots here man!
Thank you so much! I hope you try it out for yourself, it’s the hidden gem of the Fuji world imo.
@@rudermanphoto not yet got my hands on a x Mount camera, I have the x100v and had budget for an xpro 3 but then a gfx 50r came up with a price tag I couldn’t refuse! I’ve noted this down though for the day I inevitably buy an xpro 😅 expensive career choice ey 😂
@@EddyMaynard Yes it most certainly is!
This lens would be divine on the X-Pro 3!
When making this video I was reminiscing on just how nice the X-Pro 2 was to shoot even if its AF wasn't all that great. Might need to buy an X-Pro 3 in the future, that titanium body speaks to me haha
its such a good lens. the autofocus is just kinda clunky. On my xh2s its still decently fast though.
Yeah the XH2s really makes the AF performance bearable, it was so much worse on my Xpro2.
Very nice looking and performing lens! It's my always on for my XT-4 and basically sent every other lens to collecting dust on the shelf :D
That's why Fuji is still producing it.
as others have said, it was more the price, almost double the 35mm 1.4, which itself has great character. Both are fantastic though
Now try the Olympus 25mm 1.8 M43 in a Olympus E-M5 Mark II or III, or any E-M10, E-M1, and my friend... You will share the love!
is this a full frame lens ??
No, it is for Fuji crop sensor.
oh great ,.. thank you all the best @@rudermanphoto
Do you know if this lens can resolve the 40 megapixels on the X-T5?
Yes it can! It looks incredible on the XT5 :)
@@rudermanphoto you just made my day brother.
Great video! I'm considering getting this lens second hand for my XT5. How does it resolve the new 40mp sensor?
Absolutely zero issues resolving 40mpx!
It is razor sharp and absolutely fantastic on the XT5.
@@rudermanphotoso this len gets the full 40mp no problem?
@@degs88 yes photos at 40mpx are blisteringly sharp and awesome.
@@rudermanphoto awesome and thanks for your quick reply! Just recently discovered your channel and will start watching them! Already subscribed as well! Keep up the good 👍 work!
@@degs88 thank you!!
I feel like this lens would be a bit old to really work great with the latest high res. sensor though. Luckily, Fuji has the perfect primes for that.
I notice no issues using it with my X-T5, it resolves almost just as well as the modern 18 1.4 WR :)
Plenty sharp when it hits focus properly!
seems u had a great time in Bali 🙂
I loved it! Would love to return soon :)
and its usage for video?
It’s not too bad for video, but its AF is fairly noisy and the speed isn’t quite as fast as modern LM lenses.
If you use it in manual focus mode it can be a great lens for B roll and I have used it for quite a bit of B-roll in my RUclips videos though!
I tried that lens gave off weird face profiles
Woo the lens produces nice image. Thanks for your reviews. Seriously consider moving to Fuji
You are most welcome!
I have the Zeiss Macro for my XT5 and its not for sale, ever.
I really would love to try it out!
@@rudermanphoto Come over to Cornwall and you can borrow it for a day 😁
Is it good for xt4
Yes! It’s awesome for all Fuji’s but I like it best on older ones like the XPro1!
@@rudermanphoto 32mm f1.8 on xt4 gives how much effective focal length.

Either 32mm f1.8

Well sadly Zeiss has stopped to produce consumer-grade lenses for good =(. The zeiss lens coatings were something really special too!
I want to trade my 33mm 1.4 to this. I dont know if its worth it.
From reading reviews I imagine the 33 will be much more “perfect”, if you want more character in your portraits you’ll love the Zeiss but if you want the best autofocus and weather sealing and just overall perfection stick with the 33
My kind of guy. I also hate Sony and use Fuji. I have had my eye on this lens for years, but it has always been a little out of reach for me.
I always want the 3D look, but without the nervous bokeh but idk if that's possible, and at this point I'm afraid to ask because I think the answer will be Leica lenses. 😂
Embrace the bokeh! It’s what makes it special haha
Otherwise yeah you probably do need to buy a Summicron 🤣
Borrow the XF33, IMHO it has what you're looking for. The people that own one mention the pleasing character, those that don't accuse of being sterile. 🤷♂
anyone can compare this to the XF35 1.4?
Could timing. When I saw this lens I kept looking, turned away and keep looking. I haven't picked it up yet but the build of it keeps calling and the images I've seen. Man...
Do it! You won’t be disappointed!
Love my Touits. Zeiss would 💩 if they knew the Touits kept me from going to Full frame.
I can get the shots without the weight.
Zeiss needs to return to Fuji. At the time, there were few Fuji shooters.
This lens was graded poorly by many reviewers back in the day. It was the second lens I bought for my XE1. I got a practically new Touit untouched in the box for $340 from eBay. I thought it was a great lens. It was stolen at the start of the pandemic. You cannot get it at that price anymore.
These are NOT cheap now at all
they're still around about what I paid for mine, just harder to find now.
The only flaw is the motor
Man, do I have to buy this in 2024 ? 😂
This is still one of the best lenses for Fuji and despite selling quite a bit of my Fuji kit to transition to L mount I’m still holding onto the Touit because I will never ever sell it, it’s just amazing!!
Get the 90mm 2.0.
@@sclogse1 also an amazing lens
I hated this lens, the bokeh is so busy and distracting. For me the older XF35mm was better, and now the newer XF33 leaves the others far behind.
The bokeh is polarizing for sure! I personally love the way it looks, it’s unique :)
If you go for clinical perfection, the 33mm and any newer primes are your thing. 😂
If you actually tried the lens you'll see for yourself, it's far from clinical lol@@lxhk3595

£485 on eBay.
Should definitely be able to find it for a bit cheaper, I paid around 385gbp for a brand new one off eBay. (There was also a 10% off coupon though)
@@rudermanphoto Better. I'm awaiting delivery of an X-T3 with TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4. Mechanical lens, no electronic/electrical parts. And ordered a 10mm TTArtisan. Amazing facilities in the camera - never seen a sports finder in a digital camera. Started snapping in 1956. Zeiss glass is grand, been using RX10 Miii/iv for about six years.
Switching systems from one that sells a 35mm 1.8 with IS and sharp and macro and everything basically, to one that has a 32mm 1.8, is absolutely absurd. Sorry, that's just plain dumb. I'm sure it's great, it's just basically the exact same thing. Only explanation I can think of is this is a 100% paid shill advertisement video.
