    What about the relative bio-availability of animal and plant protein? i.e. how much of the protein in the food is actually digested? From what I have read from many sources, it appears that meat protein is significantly more bio-available than plant protein. I'd love to hear from Dr. Greger on this subject.

    • @EinsteinGuy
      @EinsteinGuy Месяц назад +2

      @@runner432000 the studies that show poorer bioavailability in plants were primarily animal studies where they feed single source raw plants to pigs. Obviously, people are not typically eating raw lentils and beans. We cook them which increases the bioavailability and we also combine them with other foods and nutrients which has been proven to increase bioavailability as well. That being said, plant protein bioavailability is more variable than from meat, and can average slightly less. Though a well balanced plant based diet provides far more than enough protein and vegans consistently have a higher protein content in their blood anyways further eliminating any cause for concern and proving the case for bioavailability. Dr. Nagra has a few good videos reviewing the science on this topic.

      It's not a fallacy, it's a definition that even the WHO uses and the doctor in this video doesn't seem to understand what it means. To be complete it's not enough to include all the 9 essential amino acids, but they have to be included in adequate ratios according to the definition. Rice, beans etc. don't match that definition so they are not a "complete protein" per that definition.

    • @garyloewenthal

      @@Max.Resilience If we thrive on it, then why is increased plant protein intake associated with lower mortality in the large (500,000 people) NIH-AARP study, and why does replacing red meat protein with plant protein specifically show a 14% decrease in mortality in that study?
      Perhaps in prehistoric times, the greatest contribution of meat was that it was an additional source of calories, back when calories were scarce, and lifetimes were short; but in modern society, where we have calories in abundance, and longer lifespans, the benefits of plant protein are more relevant.

    • @garyloewenthal
      @garyloewenthal 2 года назад +3

      @@Max.Resilience The aforementioned study was not in the blue zones, and the 400,000-plus participants were all in the US., and even after adjustment for BMI, plant protein was associated with lower risk of all-cause mortality.
      It is true that plant food intake and obesity are inversely related. Among other reasons, the fiber in plant foods feeds the gut bacteria, which in turn produce short-chain fatty acids that, among other things, help with satiety.

As a clinicians scientist at a prestigious university if I can modestly concede, I am ever appalled at so-called ‘health’ 30-year-plus inertia of translating evidence into practice. This resistance seems to have escalated as multinational lobby groups become more sophisticated in influencing our public health and other health-related institutions. This is so unethical on both sides.
    In your animal vs. plant-based protein video you acknowledge that the WHO supports health. I, too, believed this to be true until recently I heard the following news item. It is a bit lengthy for this post, but it is important. It was one lone voice who spoke out about and would not support unequivocally support plant-based nutrition, because the Italian ambassador vehemently opposed it citing ‘jobs and livelihoods would be lost’! This was most short-cited by the WHO.

    The World Health Organization pulled out of sponsoring a global initiative promoting healthier and sustainable diets across the world after pressure from an Italian official who raised concerns about the impact of the diet on people’s health and livelihoods.
    The event-the launch of the EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, Health in Geneva, Switzerland on 28 March-still went ahead, sponsored by the government of Norway.
    WHO dropped its planned sponsorship after Gian Lorenzo Cornado, Italy’s ambassador and permanent representative of Italy to the international organizations in Geneva, questioned the scientific basis for the diet which is focused on promoting predominantly plant based foods, and excluding foods deemed unhealthy, including meat and other animal based foods.
    Cornado warned that a global move to such a diet could lead to the loss of millions of jobs linked to animal husbandry and the production of “unhealthy” foods, and destroy traditional diets which are part of cultural heritage.
    The initiative “urging for a centralised control of our dietary choices” risked “the total elimination of consumers’ freedom of choice,” …

      Correct. There is zero fiber in meat. However, I have known a number of people who have reversed some health issues by going carnivore. I am not sure what the long-term cost is though. With my sister, it was the loss of her gallbladder and damage to her kidneys. She lost weight though. Her goal was to lose weight. Her husband also lost weight the same way because he is diabetic.

    And containing all the essential amino acids doesn't make the protein source "complete" by definition. The term "complete protein source" is defined as adequate enough of ratios of all the 9 so for example beans are not considered a complete protein source, nor is rice but soy is.

      Well yea. But it is irrelevant in an Population who eats enough Calories.. the Scores were disigned for starvation Programs in 3rd World countries. They need complete Proteins when they are starving and dont get more than 25/30g of Protein a day.... Only then it becomes relevant..
      And If you would read the Work of Plant and Animal Protein expert Francois Mariotti you would know that Plant Proteins in basicly all Legumes (except Fava Beans) are complete Proteins when we Take into consideration the newest Data and Not the PDCAAS and DIAAS

      @@Slizz No it's not irrelevant because first of all the protein recomendations aren't based on facts but what the population survives on, there is a benefit to be gained up to 1.6g/kg of extra protein for most people that use their muscle for things like exercise. Also I have been on a plant based diet and it's not easy to get enough protein without supplements even with the lower RDAs. Anyone who thinks the average person is going to eat 1kg of beans a day isn't living in reality.

      @@cyberfunk3793 yes it is irrelevant because the Database was designed for starving people.. If you are Not starving it doesnt apply to you. The Database is Not created for Westerners and muscle building and shouldnt be applied there - thats what the researchers even Note in their papers..
      Yes I agree that muscle building Potential is maximized with 1.6g/kg (1-2.2g/kg CI)
      but that has nothing to do anymore with the Database.. normal and healthy physiological function are different systems than muscle building in an hypercaloric state.
      And even If you wanna Prove that Animal Protein is supirior for muscle building in those Intake ranges you need RCTs to Show that.. and all RCTs we have which compare Animal Protein to plant Proteins and Animal to plant Based Diets Show that it doesnt Matter - No significant diffrence.
      This Mindset you have is based on Mechanistics which are based on Databases which are Not designed for this demografic.
      Eat enough Calories and exercise Close to failure.. that makes Up the Most of the muscle building..
      Getting Up to 1.6g/kg (1-2.2g/kg CI) Shows benefits for building muscle faster but the effect isnt even that big but is significant I agree..
      If you struggle to get that high rearange your Dietary pattern to eat more Protein dence and calorie dence foods in.. I at least eat 4 Meals a day ~3000kcals and get 155 - 192g of Protein a day on my plant exclusive Diet.

      Good thing our bodies are quite smart. They don't only pretend that each food is being consumed by itself, even when you consume with a bunch of other foods. No, our bodies are so dumb, that it will take each individual food, process it first, use those resources up and then process the next piece of food? COME ON, you can't serious believe that our bodies are that dumb, right?

      @@Slizz The only thing that we should care is what is the healthy level of protein for active people and is it easy to get from a plant based diet. I have figured lately that 1.2 - 1.6g/kg would probably be a good level of total protein per day and I personally know it's not easy to get on plant based diet without supplements. I bet you are eating a lot of soy every day or eating protein powder if you claim to get over 150g grams of protein. I would need to eat something like 2000 calories worth of beans to get near 100g of protein as I need to avoid fermented foods like tofu. That is too much beans and lentils every day so practically the only option would be some powder like pea, hemp or rice. I have tried them, but have chosen to eat whey powder instead. I try to eat in about 8-10h window, so 3 times a day. Not willing to eat 4 times just to get enough protein or other nutrients.

      Dr. Gregor advocates for a Whole Food Plant BASED diet. Vegans can be unhealthy because they eat processed food more than whole foods. I personally have found no benefits to eating meat when I'm not about to starve to death. I base my opinion on 37 years of watching people who eat meat and their health decline versus watching people ADD plants to their diet and they get better (some drastically). Just add more plants into your diet every day and try to vary what you add. It's not too difficult. An occasional chicken wing is no big deal. Eating lots of processed (junk) food every day can kill you over time much faster than a few chicken wings every Tuesday...

      What's your blood work like, what's your cholesterol? Just because you watch one video, you think you've learned everything? You are literally consuming the very thing that Diet is our #1 killer. Where the vast majority of our top killing diseases to boot. Just because animal products don't aggravate you, doesn't mean they've healed you. If you can't eat certain types of plants, it's because you have a problem that needs to be fixed. Have you even looked in to that at all? Just like Simon from Gojiman here on YT has done for thousands of people, you should never have a problem digesting plants. If you do, find out WHY and fix it. If your doctor's have no idea and can't figure it out, you unfortunately need to do it yourself(we need to have more autonomy anyways) through nutritionist's.
      You WILL get in to problems. The RE-SEARCH doesn't lie and the evidence is quite extensive. If you don't want to die a horrible death, I highly suggest you do a lot more research so you're not confused over one video.
      I eat well over 70grams of fiber a day and have some problems(which I'm going through the process of getting figured out like the thousands before me have). I KNOW that once this process is over, I won't have these problems anymore. Even if I still had problems, it's no where NEAR how bad animal products are for you in the long run. NO WHERE NEAR.
