I've been an illustration student for three years now and never ever ever ever has anyone explained this correctly to me. Keep in mind 95% of my portfolio consists of portraits (making this very helpful) and I have taken tons of anatomy courses. I'm super excited to apply this to a few old portraits I've done. You're a lovely teacher. Thanks a million ♡
Hello, i'm Anna, a drawing teacher from Barcelona, Spain. I'm following your videos and I share them with my pupils. They are a good way for them to do drawing homework at home. You are a very good teacher. thank you to share your tutorials with us. xx
I've watch just about every artist there is on RUclips and your videos are by far the most comprehensive and entertaining. I love the way you draw those lines to emphasize and clarify your points. Brilliant!
Hey everyone, the greatest results that ive ever had was with the Anatomy Blueprint Pro (i found it on google) definately the no.1 course that I have ever tried.
yes the anatomy drawing is of a European nose. However the concepts apply to all noses, they just have to be tweaked. Any kind of generic "rule" will have to be changed to fit your subject. I have a feeling that your nose starts to curve up at the connection of lateral cartilage to ball, not at the nasal bone to lateral cartilage. Would be helpful to see a photo. Have you sent it yet?
Each video is complete with information to the aspiring artist and student of drawing. Gee, it makes me have to get into my Gray's Anatomy texts and George Bridgman, Andrew Loomis, Burne Hogarth, etc. Thanks for the art instruction.
A couple years ago we were in Florence and saw The David. I was amazed at the precision of the sculpture, as were the 100+ people around me. I never understood why Michelangelo, Da Vinci, etc., took such an interest in anatomy until that moment. Your videos both show and explain this better than anything I have ever seen or read. I am a retired Doctor of Chiropractic with certification in Physical Therapy, and I have never had explanation of anatomy as clear and compelling as you have done. Kudos, with gratitude.
THANK YOU! I've been staring at people's noses trying to figure them out, but never could connect the small nuances of what I'd observed together. It was because I was missing the structure underneath!! This ties it all into something I can practice and study!
Had your channel opened for MONTHS on my tabs, but I didn't know where to start.... I'm good with eyes structure so I thought, "Hey let's go over to the nose", going over the video I sketched and I'm already better. Are you a wizard? The pictures you showed at the end, my eyes were already dividing their noses to parts...Off to be a creep now! So, I'm sure this is the beginning of huge adventure and I should save my thank yous but thank you. Never thought in one video i'd have better understanding....
Cuz you need to understand perspective first. Without a solid base, you won't be able to draw them correctly. Indeed they aren't hard to draw. Start with primitive shapes then learn anatomy, learn how body parts work(their purpose) then build them in every possible viewing angles out of primitive shapes learned earlier. Create your own proportion landmarks based on your personal observation. Best way to learn is not to simply copy and imitate others drawing, you have to actively understand and feel as a blind sculptor how the planes, edges and volumes of the body or any other drawing subject is really made.
There's no need to shout - we're only sitting next to you. :-) Part of the difficulty (for me, at least, maybe the same for you) is that we can't quite believe that we don't actually know what noses look like. Not well enough to draw them anyway. We've had one stuck on the front of our face for our entire life, as has everyone we know, but pick up a pencil and try to draw one and it's wtf?? Perfect example of how looking and seeing are very different things.
Sam Pollard I agree with you. I also think that a reason why it's difficult to draw a nose, and a face in general, is because we've, like you said, been seeing faces our entire lives, and as human beings we've evolved an incredibly accurate way of identifying someone's face, so we can immediately spot any mistake in a drawing of a face and consequently a nose. And I think another reason why it's so difficult to draw a nose is because it doesn't have any sharp edges. That's why it's pretty easy to draw from the side, but very difficult to draw from the front. Eyes can understand depth in a three-dimensional nose, but in a drawing, you need to use shading to add depth to it. So in order to make a good nose, you must first be good at shading as well, something that people usually don't know how to do before they try to make a nose for the first time.
I watched this video once, attempted to draw a nose and its amazing how much better it looks .Thank you. I cant wait to continue on this journey of learning how to draw. God Bless you.
proko master i have to admit that, my eyes are started to see something that i had never seen before ,even your face looks creepier especially your nose, after the nose tutorial, looks like i have gained a new power,i m going to use this power for goodness,tq master, now i am going to stare everyones face like you said, you have opened my eyes tq once again master :)
This is the first time I have drawn proportions correctly, thank you for the simple instructions. I love the way you show the lines according to your face, that makes it easy to understand.
Found this gem of a video 10 years after it's release and I found tons more videos, thank you mr proko for all the free RUclips videos and god bless you 😀👍
I love how happy your videos are. Whenever I search for how-to-draw videos, I only ever see the ones that make drawing sound like work. Yours make it seem so much more fun and happy though haha. x)
I use your videos in conjunction with demoing in class, as a way to engage my students through technology and we often do your prescribed assignments. My students seem to love the quirky humor and graphics. Thank you for putting out such quality work, so that I do not have to reinvent the wheel and do it myself.
I can already feel my skills developing from watching these videos. I'm so sick of all those "How to draw X" videos that really only show a timelapse of someone drawing something but never steps into the finer details of why things look the way they look. They might work as entertainment for kids who want to get into drawing but as an educational tool they're useless. That's why watching your videos feels so rewarding. I really can't thank you enough for taking the time to do these.
I learn so much from these videos and I'm very grateful but can we just take a moment to appreciate the editing of the video? Love your vids, keep it up!
Amazing video! I watched it as I worked on a project I was having some issues with. By the time the video ended I was left with no more problems and a perfect nose! Thanks
wow ur tutorials are very easy to understand. i didnt knew i culd draw so good but i guess u gave me the insparation to do so. Keep these tutorials coming :) thank you!!
so now we can draw the eyes, ears, nose and mouth and the head. the hard part is making sure that they are all in the right place and, specifically, making sure they are all headed the same direction. it is so easy for the nose and mouth to be floating around adn then screw up the portrait or believability of the sketch. any chance on one more in this series to really nail down the placement of the features, in perspective, within the loomis head model? thanks again
I love your courses, I observed someone's noseshape on the bus like you advised, but ended up with a bleeding nose instead..maybe you should add "keep distance" next time as a reminder
I loughed so hard at what you did to your nose, not because you looked funny but because it perfectly illustrates how people's exasperating mistakes anoy you to death xDDD I love your videos, you are so meticulous everything and I mean every little detail you utter is important or is an answer to one of the many questions that have been haunting me for ages. This is really one of the best channels on RUclips.
Your videos are so interesting...I have recently started to learn to sketch faces...your detailed information about the face is so helpful. Thank You :)
