Forgive me folks I've made an error. Looks like I omitted part about checking for power at the pump connector. The pump DID have power with the key on. I don't know what I did with that scene and I apologize for not noticing during editing.
Everybody see what you did you were talking too much nonsense and you're not doing the right checking all the way up to the pressure pump check for are and leaking so next time concentrate doing the right job
Hi Ray, I am a 42 year experience technician as an authorized Bosch Diesel tech and when you were looking at the idle fuel trims, you pretty much had the diagnosis....GM stipulates 4mm spreads, but Bosch stipulates 4mm TOTAL....meaning 2 mm plus or minus. Also, be sure to use ONLY Bosch OEM remans.....only ones out there that work right and stay working. I recently joined the automotive repair industry, instead of being in the fuel injection repair industry, so I am using your videos to familiarize myself with alot of the newer technologies. Great videos, btw.
You’ve been in the game for 4 plus decades…you don’t need to ‘familiarize’ yourself with much. With your experience, you’ve gotta be at 40 bucks an hour.
@@RainmanRaysRepairss&s or exergy are both the top 2 aftermarket gotos. Most of the performance guys use one of the 2. They do supply from stock on up. As a 3rd would by dynomite diesel, 4th flux diesel. I personally run S&S 150% over with dual 12mm pumps. High HP compound setup. They are Bosch modified injectors from the mentioned companies. Stay away from companies like injectors direct, diesel logic, pensicola, etc.
That's the first thing I would check, in particular since there's also another connector on that harness. If the pump is not kicking on, it's causing a restriction in the suction line and the high-pressure fuel pump won't be able to pull in fuel on its own. Simple check, connect the AirDog to the jumper pack, crank the engine and if it's starts, the power delivery to the pump is just bad. If it's an injector issue it wouldn't cause a no-start unless one of the injectors is stuck open and pulling the fuel pressure down, and judging by the fuel trim (and the engine sound) that isn't the case. It would also be easy to find since you're spewing lots of unburnt diesel out the exhaust. It sounded fine at WOT so I suspect more of a common fuel delivery problem than an injector one. The chance that ALL 8 injectors are bad is very slim. And swapping 8 injectors is gonna be an expensive job if it's only a wiring issue to the lift pump.
Ray I wanted to comment on how beautiful it is how you and Lauren get along with such a beautiful love you both have for each other. I hope one day I can have the same love that you both have for each other. You and Lauren and the kiddos have a great day.
I put air dog in my Dirtymax at 160,000 km. (100,000)miles. Still on factory injectors. 1,045000 km now I have taken them to Bosch rebuilt Center. They cleaned tested all good. They didn’t sell me new ones . That was at 920,000km
Those were the days. Probably done 50+ sets of those injectors when I was at the stealership. If you need some help fly me on down🤣🤣. It’s not a terrible job, just a lot of things to take off. Used to be able to knock a set out in about 6 hours. Good luck!
I did all eight on my 04 LB7. I had about twelve hours in mine. I am a PDR guy who was a body man back when I had to do it. You're right it is a lot of stuff to remove to just get to the injectors, and making sure all the metal fuel lines are tight and leak free was a bit of a pain, but all has been good ever since.
so much advice from so many experts! diesels aren’t that simple irt their fuel system & are expensive to maintain with injector replacement costing $5k incl 14hrs labour. mybe i’ll stay with gas powered vehicle!
The AirDog (or FASS) lift pump was a common mod even on the 2nd-gen Dodge with the Cummins. It came with a weak lift pump from the factory, mounted on the block up by the fuel filter / water separator. On my '01, I did "phase 1", which was to relocate the lift pump to the frame rail right in front of the tank. (Well, that's really phase 2. Phase 1 is to install a fuel pressure gauge after the filter. The fragile Bosch VP44 really does not like to be starved of its lubricating and cooling "extra fuel".) Phase 3 is to install the aftermarket pump/filter/water separator by the tank like this customer's truck has. And I kinda cringed (and laughed) when Ray described the labor and parts costs to swap injectors. It took this first-timer 2 hours to replace the factory injectors with something a little less docile. The hardest part was getting a wrench on #6. The injectors themselves weren't cheap, though - almost $900.
Half way through video Ray be pulling truck into a stall. Ray says, "Loren's got me!" Yes Ray, she does have you, and you're luck to have "beautiful Loren!" 😮😂😂🎉🎉
Ray, have you considered tossing a cheap big screen into the shop? Years ago while rebuilding a 91 4runner, I connected a GoPro to a monitor zip tied to the hood to find a leaking injector because the camera fit where I couldn't. These days, you could use a big screen with a chromecast and literally cast your phone screen and just slide your phone in wherever you need and see it live.
Great work as always. A cam and crank sensor issue wouldn't be fixed by starting it on brake cleaner. Diesels usually run a small "pilot" fuel injection followed by a main - especially during start, idle and low speed/load running. Your total fuel rate (11 mm3/injection) was equal to pilot (2.2 mm3/injection) + main (9.4 mm3/injection). The fuelling was also shown as pulse duration in microseconds (us). CMD = commanded. Cylinder balance value at -3 mm3/injection is pretty huge, so that is bad. In my experience, foot on the floor for a diesel doesn't have any impact as it is in crank mode until it reaches a specific engine speed. The fuel rate, timing, fuel pressure is specific to that mode. It's common that the start fuel quantity gets "ramped" up on a timer - that could be why it eventually started. Clearly under fuelling - hence needs to brake cleaner to get going. I wouldn't have thought to try that. FBC (Fuel balance Control) only works to even up the idle by looking at speed fluctuations on the flywheel. It usually shuts of at about 1500rpm. Is it building high pressure rail pressure during cranking? I would guess so. What's going on with the intake - that bit sitting near the alternator.
Hey Ray after replacing two sets of Bosch remains I found out that Bosch and S&S injectors got together and totally redesigned Mechanicals inside the injector I bought them through D-Max store there are special only on Duramaxes play also have an injector kit with the valve cover bolts which also is issue and the injectors come with a 3-year warranty brand new
Im so glad i had this video of yours come up for me. Because this truck is doing the same as mine. With the same engine and the filter deleted with the lift pump. Not sure if its the same pump but im not worried with that. My scan tool says lost communication with ficm. Fyi, it don't mean it don't have 4x4 if it has no buttons. It might have a shifter on the floor. That one there has the full center column. So obviously it would have the buttons.
Just a thought, check if the deleted part of the air tube is fully sealed and not sucking unmetered air into the intake throwing the air/fuel ratio off before opening it all up. much love
It was a ford Transit, but a Mechanic at my work went to a ford dealership, and they had replaced the engine and damn near everything else, the Mech decided to bypass the filters, and it actually ran... he checked out the filter housings and found they were leaking in air. he replaced those and all was fixed, so the dealership wasted months and couldn't fix the problem, one guy comes in and had it fixed in a few hours.
109th! Hope you and your wife unit and family are having a wonderful Christmas season! And to never forget about the new employees! Roger in Pierre South Dakota
My first out in the field job was ….. go out to the vehicle and change these filters, bleed it up and travel back to the workshop kind of job🤔( luckily the vehicle was our loan vehicle )I did as requested I did have fun as at the time I didn’t know anything about the electric fuel pump on that particular vehicle …. Turns out it wasn’t the fuel filters the problem was the electric fuel pump cutting in an out when it wanted to. Being that the lift pump is fairly new it shouldn’t be the problem on this vehicle though ( just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s good😉)
I did 1 on a Saturday back in the day of working in the dealership travelers going thru on a Saturday morning starting at 7am and gave them the truck back at 130 pm. Not a bad job at all.
10-12hrs seems like a bit much for the seasoned professional. The first one I did was over a decade ago in my early 20’s. I didn’t know near as much about turning a wrench as I do now. Electric ratchets didn’t exist, I was working out of a friend’s severely unorganized tool box, had to stop and make my own fuel line disconnect tool, got far deeper into a case of beer than I intended to, and included the time to stop and slather some JB Weld onto a pinhole leak in a steel coolant line. In the face of all of that adversity, I still got it done in 8hrs. I feel like I could probably come close to cutting that time in half today, but could definitely shave off 2hrs. Don’t get me wrong, it is a big job that I have absolutely no desire to do again, but an organized fella with a proper set of tools and years of experience can easily get it done within one 8hr work day. 2 layer valve covers are at the top of the list of the absolute dumbest ideas I’ve ever seen under a hood. I’d rather wrench on an inline diesel under water before I would a V configuration on the best of days. I vote that Ray just does a 12v Cummins swap rather than replacing Duramax injectors. The cost for parts and labor probably wouldn’t be very far apart. Lol
Thanks for the informative video these video have taught me what is involved in diagnosing a problem and the time consuming repairs great job as always.
I like how you checked to see if there was air in the system from the AirDog. I was running an AirDog lift pump on my Powerstroke. My pump would not self-prime when I changed the filters. I would have to screw the filter on and then loosen it, crank the truck until fuel pumped out of the filter, and then screw the filter on quickly. I had my Banks iDash set on the lift pump pressure so I could monitor this when I changed the filters. I like the pump but this was a pain. I ended up going back to the OEM lift pump so I could fit the 70gal aftermarket fuel tank. The AirDog is just sitting on a self now.
Ray check the Harnes form the AIrdog it locks like Repaired. A Damage in this Harnes and you have Zero Voltage on this, result is no Pumping Diesel. When you Start it with Breakcleaner the Engine Negativ Presseur suck on Diesel to the HP Diesel Pump.
Great video was just wondering if you should have tested the pump power and socket powered from the car rather than external battery before saying the pump was OK?
Merry Christmas to you and the family Ray!! I have a 95' k2500 with a 97 engine been having starting issues with it , so I started with glow plugs.. Starts better.. but now to chase oil leaks.. LOL! Thanks for all the great videos ! Merry Christmas all! Have a Happy and safe New years everyone!!
Allow me to suggest Southwest Diesel & Electric in Phoenix, AZ for all of your fuel injector needs & no I don't work for them but I have used them for decades & I live in Texas.
I do believe that's the same engine in the HUMMV and that black box on the high pressure fuel pump can cause all those issues when it goes bad. When they go bad they automatically think the engine is overheating and it shuts down the fuel pump. Thus making the lift pump the only source of fuel pressure.
Humvees should have the older 6.5 in them, completely different engine and pump. All of the injector lines go to the pump on those. It’s a Stanadyne rotary pump. The black box you refer to is on the driver’s side of the pump body, is about the size of a deck of cards and is what make the pump injector fuel to each injector. It’s called a PMD - pump mounted driver, or FSD - fuel solenoid driver. The CP 3 on the Duramax is made by Bosch and feeds 2 fuel rails and then the injector lines come off of the fuel rails - 4 per side.
Kind of like replacing a water pump on a car with timing belt. You have to remove fan belts, shroud, plastic cover, and timing belt first. Getting there is most of the cost. That's why you always replace water pump while replacing timing belt. You are already there. In this case, getting there is most of the cost.
I had that done recently on my car too. I had an Egr assembly replaced due to massive crack in it causing coolant leaks. Got the Egr replaced, then 6km later my water pump packed it in. Mechanic said pay the extra $200 and get the timing belt done at the same time. Glad I did because the timing belt was overdue anyway so gave me one less thing to worry about. No more coolant leaks now and $4000 later lol
I have seen video - think it was Wheeler Dealer - specialty shops have the ability to test fire injectors on the bench. A good one looks very different from a bad one.
Balance rates are checked with the vehicle in drive at idle at temp. Factory filter will produce air into the system if the seals are bad, also return rates and excessive return fuel will cause starting issues. Most cases like this are from the factory fuel filter allowing fuel to drain back from the bad seals pulling air in. Cp3 pumps dont eat themselves and produce any metal, but the fca will cause issues, the fuel pressure sensor will cause issues. Balance rates arent the only tell tale of failing injectors, they will always fluctuate since its a common rail system. Id check 10 things before doing injectors. Your probably way past that now, but the injectors on this truck are not the issue.
I’m no mechanic by any means but I do own a Duramax and work on just about everything myself. The whole video I had an inkling he was kinda jumping to conclusions on it being the injectors, the balance rates while running I always thought -4 to +4 were within spec, it seems like there was a air issue when trying to start, airdog states to NOT use hose clamps on the push fit connections so maybe it’s sucking air there, I feel like he should have ran the lift pump with the jump pack and cranked the truck and see if it started
@LumenChaser i agree, although the higher paying job would be to do injectors, my personal opinion from working on duramaxs everyday. From stock to performance, i highly doubt it was the injectors. But its his shop, his channel, and his way of making a living. So i cant knock that.
@@builtbyme having an honest reputation is hard to find these day. Jumping to conclusions and telling the customer that he needs $7k to do injectors without being sure is definitely not a good way to do business.

A little bit of the ether bunny!
Duramax started in 2001 round-eye GMT800 trucks, cateye was not the first.

Lauren was doing the Macarena dance.
wife unit.👍👍
Brake clean has apparently replaced Diethyl Ether.
Probably because of the Dual use.
Another day for a Chevrolet. Keeping mechanics fed since... FOREVER!
I didn't see you test that the fuel pump was getting the 12v from the wire harness.
