I don’t get this soft draw business, every team plays eachother throughout the season whether once or twice, they played Mebourne twice, played Manly twice a bogey team of theres for years & beat them at Brookvale which happens once in a millenium so to speak, then had to play 4 teams in or around the top 4 at the time which included Storm, Cowboys, Panthers & Rabbitohs winning 3/4. The last time Sharks played Souths, Sharks got up 21-20 in a cracker of a game with semi finals intensity & I’m sure this game won’t be any different considering the stakes are much higher. I do remember Gus saying Sharks had a soft premiership, does he not remember how they came back to beat Canberra in Canberra when all the odds were against them then had to beat Storm when they still had Cronk, Smith & Slater amongst others in peak form.
The soft draw comes from the fact that some teams end up playing some of the lower teams twice, like playing the Warriors, Bulldogs or Tigers as an example. Instead of playing teams twice like the Bunnies, Storm, Panthers and Roosters as stronger teams. Further to that when you play the stronger teams, are they being played with or with their Origin Star Players? The games against Manly are interesting as the Sharks beat them in Rd 7 without Turbo, easily Manly’s best player. Any team playing Manly after Rd 18 isn’t really a massive win, as they completely collapsed after the Pride Jersey. Unfortunately the Sharks NEEDED to Win against the Cows, as the ended up on the wrong side of the Draw. Both the Bunnies and the Sharks are going to get smashed this week and whoever wins will play the Panthers. Unfortunately, neither the Sharks or the Bunnies will progress further than the Panthers game. The only team really that has a chance of knocking the Panthers down on that side of the draw is the Bunnies, as they will hopefully bring the Panthers down into the mud and play an aggressive kind of niggle game.
As a long term sharks fan, I was disappointed to lose a tight one last Saturday night. but Gus you did say that the sharks in 2016 won the premiership by virtue of the most potent teams being eliminated by the other teams in the final series of that year. Anyway as Brad Arthurs said when questioned about a parramatta win over a depleted Melbourne Storm outfit. you play what's in front of you depleted team or not, you still play against 13 players on the other side
