The Truth About City Guys | The '90s Saturday Morning Show With The Catchiest Theme Song Ever!

- Опубликовано: 21 май 2024
- Back in the ‘90s, NBC ran a programming block of shows on Saturday morning called TNBC, the ’T’ standing for teen as that was the demographic they were targeting. I’m sure many of you remember Saved by the Bell, California Dreams, Hang Time and, the one this video is about, City Guys.

I love me some City Guys! They used to stream on Tubi, I was so bummed they took it off there. The theme song was a bop! TNBC Saturday mornings were the best!
It looks like it's on RUclips free, if you're looking to rewatch.
damn and I had them in my saved list to watch 😭. I remember watching this show when it ran in syndication on WB I think
I used to watch all of them shows
But city guys was my favorite
It also has the record for the highest rated teen show on a Saturday slot to this day
Free vee on Prime runs a marathon every now and then. They run it for a whole week then theyll play Coach next its TNBC on there. I be having the time of my life when they air it 😂
I’m glad they took it off Tubi. It needs to be on nbc apps and dvds. No more third party bum ass are streaming services. I’m older to actually watch this show live
Peacock needs to add all of the old TNBC lineup, along with Passions.
All the episodes of Passions are here on RUclips
@mstif26 until someone at NBC Universal decides to pull it. I'm talking about the legit episodes, not the recorded bootlegs, even though I'm not really picky.
So much nostalgia sitting in that vault.
Wesley and the principal reunited
on the bud light commercial.
Mini city guy's reunion.
I agree! I loved TNBC!
Probably a long shot, but could we get a retrospect on GhostWriter? (also fun fact: Principal Noble’s actress played main character Jamal’s grandma)
Nell Carter (of Gimme A Break fame) was almost cast as the principal.
I asked for this too! Ghostwriter made me love NYC and eventually move there as an adult.
I remember that show.
Loved Ghostwriter. Use to watch it after Carmen Sandiago
True. I thought Carmen Sandiago was on Fox Kid’s while Ghostwriter was on PBS.@@pa.encema2821
Damn. Peter Engel had the midas touch. He took full advantage of the untapped Saturday morning teen market. Very smart.
Yes indeed! Too bad networks only cared for ratings and number crunching in the end.
I was watching “City Guys” in syndication on Tuesday September 11th when the first plane hit the North Tower at 8:46. I will never forget this show for that reason.
WXMI Fox17 only aired the plot and EP5 that week late at night since they aired Fox News all that week on 9/11 like most broadcast networks did.
City Guys was so good! Another 90s gem 🙌🏾
Aye, this was my show! Every saturday morning!!! Followed by some PepperAnn and Recess on ABC's One Saturday Morning.
Wow Pepper Ann you took it back...I remember that crazy theme song 😂 thank you for unlocking that memory!
They have one Saturday morning here in RUclips! I love hearing the jingle, what a time to be alive!
The City Guys theme song gives me such a warm, fuzzy feeling of being free from school. The pilot episode premiered just two and a half months after I graduated high school, which was actually the Saturday before school reopened. Just knowing there was no such thing as 13th grade, made that weekend all the more merrier. Keep in mind I was not the most studious, and therefore went to summer school all throughout high school, excluding my senior year when I finally buckled down. Therefore, I didn't have any goals or dreams, and still lived with my mother until I was 27. But I would gladly rewind the hands of time, to be living with her while young, vibrant and carefree. Damn you, Father Time.
Rolling with the city guys, city guys, rolling with the city guys.
That City Guys intro was dope. Almost gave me teen New York Undercover vibes lol (but more comedic). Man they had the best shows back then!
@@blaxpoitation8528 I can definitely see that NYU comparison. You know what's crazy is that I could've sworn that the actor who played L-Train was the stuttering dude in "Deliver Us From Eva." It was a very small role, so you may not remember -- when the guys showed Ray (LL Cool J) a picture of Eva (Gabby Union) whom they wanted to set him up with. "L-Train" happened to be walking by them and saw the pic and said, "B-B-B-Bitch!!" and started having Vietnam flashbacks. He also had a small role in "The Jamie Foxx Show" as K-CI and JoJo's manager at the recording studio who answered the phone and then relayed to K-CI and JoJo that Busta Rhymes (actually Jamie in disguise) is on his way up. He was also on "Def Comedy Jam." It blew my mind when I realized that was not L-Train.
Anthony Anderson on Hang Time was epic
Teddy Broadis
Fake Michael Strahan.
He never talks about that.
I’ll never not think of him as the dude from Hang Time
@@lacolem1 Or the fake Michael Strahan in those Walmart TV spots with Sarah Michelle Gellar (aka the fake Kelly Ripa.)
I loved this show and Wesley (and his dimples)!
Wesley is STILL fine with a beautiful family now. ❤
@@danavixen6274 also Dion Basco (Alberto) is brother to Dante Basco aka "Rufio" from "Hook" and The voice of "Zuko" in "The Last Airbender"
He also played in movies and commercials as well.
He reunited with the principal on
i think bud light commercial.
Little city guy's reunion.
I’m not gonna lie the T-NBC line up was definitely my guilty pleasure. This was when Saturday morning was worth getting up early for.❤️❤️
Facts. Not like this garbage today where all u get is THE NEWS & CRAPPY STUFF
O snap CITY GUYS clicked on this ASAP! How about a video on "USA HIGH"?!!!
Oh my god yess!! This show isn’t talked about as much
Damn, USA high!😮 That certainly brings back memories! Shout out to the little Italian dude lazorinni or somethin like that!
Rockin at USA high!
That theme song was also a banger!
Chile, the TNBC lineup was everything to me growing up... Hang Time, City Guys, California Dreams, Saved by the Bell (the original & its spin-off The New Class)... life was so good 😉 They just don't make good shows like these anymore. (Fun fact: The late Frank Bonner, best known for playing sleazy sales manager Herb Tarlek on WKRP in Cincinnati, directed every single episode of City Guys over the course of its 5-season run. He had even made a cameo in one of the episodes.)
City Guys was a fun show! Out of all the cast members, Wesley Jonathan is still in the spotlight. He went on to do "What I Like About You" on CW with Amanda Bynes and "The Soul Man" with Cedric The Entertainer. He was also in Roll Bounce and way before that he was in Panther and appeared in the film Badass about the making of Sweetback's Badass Song.
City Guys lost me with 40 something year old El-Train passing himself off as a "teenager". They coulda at least said he was attending night school or something.
😂😂😂💀
🤣🤣🤣🤣
El-Train was that guy though haha
I went to high school with old faced doods. That's what gave the show its urban cred.
The key words there are "old faced".
El-Train looks altogether like he was on his way to his AARP membership.
😅
City Guys was my shiiiiiiiiiiiid growing up!!!.... I still watch it from time to time to this day!..
I love some City Guys and the show still comes on every now and then. Good times! It’s still a great sitcom for the 90s
Middle school memories! I had 😍 for Scott Whyte after seeing him play Gunnar Stahl in Mighty Ducks 2. And recognized Wesley from darn near everything, because that dude stayed busy getting parts on tv shows. Those guys were a hilarious duo on City Guys.
This was my show as a kid! They used to show this like 2pm on WB coming home from elementary school.
California Dream!!! WOW.. havent heard about that in years
Surf dudes with attitude, kinda groovy. Laid back moves, the sky above the sand below. Good vibrations, feeling mellow.
Damn I miss California Dreams. I've never heard of City Guys. Thanks for this.
I watched two years ago on Tubi. I had never heard of it either... It was actually pretty good, City Guys.
I loved City Guys growing up 😁
One of my childhood favorites, matter of fact, I still watch it from time to time 'til this day 📺👌🏽💕
Ok I thought I was the only one that remembered this show and had the theme song live rent free in my head since the early 00s.
Sn The bad girls club scene in the new intro took me 😂
YES! Thanks for spending the time to do this. I loved City Guys much more than any other of those Saturday morning shows. It seemed a bit more relatable to me because of the urban setting and diverse cast. Some of these situations were closer to what I experienced unlike SBTB.
Thanks to RUclips, I can finally watch this classic again
This was done by peter engle loved this show too watched everyone all on tube
Thank you for this video. I loved this show growing up! Marcella Lowery was one of my favorite characters, especially because we share the same first name.
My late grandmother's name. ❤
STILL WATING,ON THAT (SATURDAY MORNING(GUYS NEXT DOOR) VID..:)
They need to City Guys back on Tubi or either put it on Pluto TV or Peacock
It looks like it's on RUclips.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 for real thank you
Saturday mornings were lit back then. Thank you for this! This is why I love this channel
I LOVE City Guys!!! I discovered it during the spring of 2002. I watched it at 2 pm on WB 17 (reruns) I'm not crazy about the theme song, though. Cassidy is my favorite.
I love City Guys it's like Inner City version of Saved By the Bell
Omgosh ❤ Can we get Hangtime next?!! Love the theme song
Great request . Loved hang time.. the random badass on their team who wore leather jackets .. lol great show . Another great theme song too
We used to smoke so much bud while watching City Guys and Hang Time and California Dreams and just laugh and laugh and laugh at how stupid it was
I loved this show!!! I didn't know it existed until about 2000-ish because I still watched Saturday morning cartoons 😂As a millennial teen, this was my Saved by the Bell. I also watched Just Deal and SK8!
Why do I not remember this at all???? I remember and watched saved by the bell (duh), USA high, California dreams etc
Can you please do a video on One World? Love your content. Keep it Up!
That show is a blast from the past. I remember the show ended on a cliffhanger.
Man, do I ever miss the TNBC block!!! They say that by 2000, it was no longer reaching its target audience, but a teenaged me was still watching the series, as well as the other series! City Guys was definitely my favorite of the TNBC block, & it's criminal that none of these series have been made available for home video, & apparently, they're not streaming anywhere, either. Now that you've done City Guys, would you cover One World next?
I was raised seventh day Adventist so I didn't watch TV on Saturday mornings. I remember 21 jumpstreet and I remember Wesley Jonathan in the show get a life 😊 and Wesley appeared in panther and roll bounce...hope he makes it bigger🙏🏾...
That theme song lives rent-free in my head every now and then.
the show used to tape between ‘sister, sister’ & ‘moesha’, both shows that wesley jonathan (jamal) previously guest starred in.
wesley admitted to initially being envious of both shows because of their prime time slots (and money), which he felt he was ready for.
Loved this show, watched it on weekdays where I lived. Right before school, and I knew it was a Boscoe in there somewhere lol
Last time I ever watched City Guys on actual television(no apps from smart tv) was 21 years ago this coming weekend.
This was my favorite Saturday AFTER cartoons show next to California Dreams!!!
I loved this show
Heyyy so nostalgic
This was my show!
Sending love From NYC!
Still watch the reruns on RUclips. Memories
Wow, noticing now as an adult how they only had 1 black person on most of the shows (Saved by the bell, California dreams, Melrose Place, Power rangers, etc. ) it makes me so sad to realize this.
Aye! Juicy Pop’s been showing a lot of love to underrated shows lately and I’m here for it 😁
Memories i love watching it on Saturday mornings
Theme song was so fire i still randomly sing that
Wesley Johnathan won my heart as a lil Loca
It's funny how black shows had to have like at least two white characters but white shows didn’t have to in the 90s
That’s actually not true. When a show was a “black show” back in the 90s, there were rarely any white characters as part of the main cast. In fact, I challenge you to name a “black show” from the 90s, that has 2 white characters as part of the main cast.
Also, I wouldn’t consider City Guys to be a “black show.” It takes place in a multiracial school in Manhattan.
@@GrimyGrafhic I mean you're definitely wrong. Malcom and Eddie added two. The Parkers had a white character, New York Undercover had a white character. Martin started off with a White character (his assistant DJ). The Wayans Bros had a white character (he was dropped later because he got his own show). The white character on Black sitcoms is absolutely a thing, and really highlights the networks refusal during that period to be always fully black. There are several exceptions that didn't (ie. Living Single, Roc) but this is very real trope in Black television.
And City Guys IS a "black show." Once you urbanize a show on NBC, there is a certain spectrum they were looking for but didn't say it out loud. Friends was in the city but it was metropolitan (ie. White and hip). Urban is code for Black. The 90s belonged to Black culture and Hip-Hop. They wanted that Black viewership of a certain kind, and City Guys was that attempt.
Great show, and I love the New York story😂❤
Do the show "in the heat of the night" lol. I'm an old guy
I’m young and I love that show.
Absolutely! It's one of my favourites.
What About "Major Dad" & "Getting By"
@@JuicyPopEntertainment4:52 so do I.
Man, I loved this show as a teenager, I wish they would show reruns.
I used to LOVE city guys!!! Wesley Jonathan baby! ❤❤❤
I've always thought City Guys would have been a better show outside of that Saturday morning block. Maybe they would have been able to keep their original script instead of it being revised.
As a tween, I saw a live taping of this show and loved it! I think the Asian guy is the same actor that played Rufio in the ‘Hook’ movie with Robin Williams
Close! The actor is his brother 👌🏿
Brings back serious memories. Thanks for this!
This was my shit growing up I used to tune in every Saturday.
Nice new intro video. Loved City Guys.
Great story on City Guys
I use to love this show. Damn I forgot all about this show
I definitely remember this show. I also thought Wesley was fine lol. This was a great show and I hope we can watch re runs on a different platform soon.
City Guys is one of my all time favorite shows back in the day. My best friend and I had the biggest crush on Wesley Johnathan haha
Love this channel and this show!!! Another banger as always so keep them coming. It will forever be a mystery to me why City Guys and all of the other TNBC shows for that matter aren't available on Peacock. They own the rights so to sit on it for no apparant reason is silly to me when you have a streaming platform to air it.
Never heard, seen nor remember this show before but it looks like it was a good show based on your commentary 👌
Good morning 🌅🌄 from maryland. I don't remember this show😮
Shout out to city guys 💯🔥💪🏾... The theme song was dope...💯🔥
Thank you so much for this episode. I used to watch this show with my Goddaughter. We both loved it. Good show.
I thought Wesley was Nick Cannon.
You KNOW I been waiting for this one! TY!
Hey Juicy Pop, can you do a video on True Jackson VP? That was a underrated show with Keke Palmer 😊
I use to watch TNBC and this show
Another great video Juicy Pop 😄 Happy Memorial Day 😊
🥰
@@JuicyPopEntertainment3:28 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰you too.
This was my Ish. Saturday Morning lineup? Saved By The Bell,California Dreams,Hang Time,And City Guys.
It was streaming on Freevee
My guy Dion was on this show. My wife is close friends with his family.
His brother voiced my favorite character on The Last Airbender Zuko
Oh yea I remember this show ,I used to watch this show every week.
It was on the Tnbc channel on freevee. They also was playing Hangtime. I didn’t know if they lost the right to stream it 🤦🏾♂️
thank you so much 🙏been waiting for this 🤩💜
Saved by the Bell, Saved by the Bell The New Class, California Dreams, Hang Time, USA High, City Guys, Malibu CA and One World literally all did the exactly same storylines and plots but City Guys did it best. When they did their more serious episodes it felt a bit more natural and not as much out of left field like the others.
Principal Noble DID NOT PLAY.....
I miss waking up to watch programs like this on Saturday mornings.
This was my
Show. Especially not having cable. This was clutch on Saturdays with cartoons on wb. Great times
Great video. OMG!!! I loved TNBC. City Guys was my favorite, it was ahead it's of time in terms of tackling issues in the world. I have been asking why Peacock hasn't put these shows on their streaming platform. EL Train was my favorite character, and the cast chemistry was great.
I never see people talk about this show!! Great video! I'm about to binge this channel!
C-I-T-Y you can see why, these guys, the new guys smart and street wise!! Thay was a banger
City guys rocked
The theme song of this show is incredible! It really captures the feel of NYC in the late 90s.
Loved this show and have never forgotten the two Black actors, so I always recognize them!
I watched this show every Saturday, never missed an episode. I miss shows like these 🥺
😂😂😂 I forgot about this show and then heard you play the theme song and I remembered that I used to watch this show.
I've never knewn about this tv show. Thank you for this review!
I love the show when I was a teenager
Teen NBC had some pretty good shows in the early 2000s. Does anyone remember the other T-NBC shows “All About Us”, “One World”, and “Just Deal”?
They had another one called Skate about a group of skateboarders.
I was kid when this show was on tv. I always mention and nobody my age ever remembers it lol. Thank you for making a video about it.
I was in my early 20's when City Guys aired and I never missed an episode
Never gave city guys a chance. Saved by the Bell, California Dreams and Hang Time were my all-time favorites. I think City Guys aired at 12 pm. That time was WWF SUPERSTARS for me on Fox 5 😂
