I think another factor to consider in the Ariana vs Alicia comparison, is that Alicia's music and image was always presented as pure and down-to-earth image, whereas Ariana has been making bad-girl music since My Everything was back in 2014. Hell, this isn't even Ari's first rodeo with romantic scandles (remember Big Sean and Jhene Aiko?). So when people found out about Alicia and Swizz's affair, it was a complete mind-fuck for people as it felt like a complete 180 from what Alicia's music/image was (and still is), whereas for Ari, people kinda felt like it was business as usual.

As someone who's been cheated on twice in two separate relationships (ego-buster, much? Lol), I 100% agree with this. I mean, people who go after people who are in relationships are still wrong and responsible for their behavior, too, but a person who wants to be faithful will be, period. I definitely have mixed feelings as a fan who really loves this album sonically, but dislikes cheating. From what I understand and have read, it sounds like they were both having complications in their marriages and potentially moving on. Doesn't make it right at all, but people be messy, especially when high emotions get involved. It's given me a lot of peace to forgive my cheating exes and the women they cheated with, and I think that's why I feel I can "forgive" (but NOT excuse) Ariana. However, to be fair I must acknowledge that halo effect may be in play here as well, I might have been less forgiving if the music sucked 😅

I don’t think Alicia fell off cuz of the affair. Empire State of Mind, Unthinkable, and Girl on Fire were huge hits. She started falling off when her music became less commercial and frankly less good.
Also we still don’t know how this will affect Ariana long term. She has lots of loyal Stan’s but Yes And was number one for one week and then fell fast. The long term effects of her affair are tbd…
