Great tip putting the ting on some clear plastic to see what it looks like on the chromed pieces. I have F^%$$^ so many pieces that I chromed after tinting because I got a different color than what I had thought.
Thank you Gordon, I wish I had met you 20 years ago as I had some work in the Gold Coast (Australia) area working on some movie props... I like your method more!
Yes, this is the video I've been waiting for! Thanks for the clear walk through. I remember asking you on Twitter back in the summer/early fall I think about wait times between the Aqua gloss and the 2K. Now we know haha
You can get away with less time but I always give it longer than it really needs. It's SUPER dry here in Los Angeles usually so it's pretty dry in like an hour but... I'm paranoid.. ;)
I know this video is old but is it possible to leave a list of the products you used as well as 1 or 2 alternatives for things that might not still be available? Awesome vid!
Great video very interesting although I'm a bit confused as I thought a while back in a video on gold tinting items you decided to use food coloring drops of yellow & red.
There's not really "a way" to do pretty much anything. I'm constantly experimenting to improve and update everything I do. Something I did a few years ago is only something I was using at the time. Does't mean the old method isn't still totally viable for some situations but I always try to make the process easier, sturdier, and more repeatable. Even in this video I'm experimenting with slightly different tint than I was using previously. ;)
@@gordontarpley ok I'm with you on all of that as I still have my c3po to alclad and then gold tint etc I have to buy a airbrush and compressor any recommend ones out there? Nice vid! I am working on Din Jarin's armor from the Mandalorian and was wondering how I can achieve the "chrome" effect it has. I have an airbrush and if it's on the more reflective side I would be happy XD. Any tips?
I'm also working on Mandalorian armor but I'm interested to know if the auto clear coat would stay flexible? I don't want the paint to crack if the eva foam bends..... I'll have to do some more testing!
@@thejanehustle You could try and add a flex agent to the clear. Its used on auto bumpers etc. For the chrome you can add Imperiflex to the Alumaluster chrome
Great video Gordon, love your tutorials! I am going to do this method on my Judge Dredd shoulder pads! need them nice and shiny. I know others have asked about airbrushes but have you tried it yet with the 2k clear? It should be fine but wanted your opinion
This is awesome but it’d be really cool to see your old - more wallet friendly process of applying a tinted gloss with the brush and the McCormick food coloring!
I'm almost to the point of needing to tint my C-3PO head and I can't seem to find that Burman Industries dye online anywhere and the link is broken from the comment area. Do you know where I can pick this stuff up?
You may have to resort to something else. Maybe check candy colors by companies like SEM. I like their California Gold for tinting spray chrome but it's a little brassy looking over Alclad
@@gordontarpley I was possibly going to just do the food coloring method as I have the Liquitex Gloss Varnish and McCormick food coloring readily available in the Central Illinois area. It seems to be a little cheaper than the SEM route also. Would you say since I don't have access to the Burman Industries die, is the SEM "brassy" color or food coloring method closer in color to C-3PO?
Great video, Gordon! Appreciate all the information. How much SEM California Gold do you typically add to your 2k clear? Guessing 8:1 but I wasn't sure if you've experimented and had success with a different ratio.
In this one I didn't use the SEM color but usually about 1/3 of one of those pipettes of color to 60ml of clear but I'm always experimenting and sometimes it depends on the project. I prefer it to be slightly under-tinted and do extra coats of paint to achieve my color because it's much more forgiving BUT if I have something with lots of detail and can't afford to layer on lots of paint I'll add more tint to the mix.
Great vidéo. I am using alclad candy Golden yellow alc 706 to tint. I Will try the sem California gold when I can. I learn so Much with tout videos. Thank you.
@gordontarpley any thoughts on tint that will work that’s cheaper than the the SEM and available on Amazon? I’m tempted to experiment with the food coloring... But something still decent. I know you’ve experimented quite a bit too.
Food colouring is water based so be careful when you try it with your clear... I don't thing it would work with the two pack though you may tint the water based varnish coat instead... Try it out first and always clean your spray gun thoroughly! Good luck!
@@CreativeGraphicsGroup ok, let me know how it goes! I always test on a few different surfaces. Depending on room/day temperature and time of year I have found different results can be achieved. Cheers from us here in Brisbane Australia.
Any reason for preferring the tinted clear coat instead of using one of the Alclad paints in the color you're after? Also, how thick is clear coat mix. Can it be shot through a typical artist airbrush?
Tinted auto clear is easier to control and cures extremely clear with a glass smooth surface. Haven't had those kind of results with the alclad tint coats.
Mr. Tarpley.. I know this video is a bit old but I have a question that it pertains to. I have attempted a C-3PO and went with spaz stix chrome and their gold tint. I am curious if you have ever tried it. The look came out a bit too.... golden at least to my eyes. I am going to mix up a batch of your tint with food coloring to see if that gets me closer. I also will try to improve on my surface texture if I can.. I was just curious if you had tried the spaz stix gold tint and what were your results?
For what it’s worth, I’ve just started experimenting like you. I got both the chrome and gold. My tests with the gold looked like gold paint, and the chrome looks like real shiny metal. It’s like the gold is more flat and powdery. I’m about to head to the store to buy aqua gloss to seal a good chrome attempt. I wonder if I can tint that after a few sealing layers? I also wonder if you can mix the gold and chrome to make a lighter and shinier gold?
@@bobbybloomfieldproducer Spraying the aqua gloss was not much easier.. However.. With a little paint, you can brush it on in a similar way as Gordon Tarpley did it.. Just takes a lot of practice..
I know this is an old video, but I was wondering if you have any suggestions for gold in 2024. Both options you used in this video no longer exist. And everything I have tried as a replacement just looks like spraypaint even if they are transparent like tamyia transparent color acrylic, even the alclad transparent colors ruin the chrome shine.
Hi Gordon just a quick question will i get that result if i use a candy yellow tinting color? and will i use less than the usual ratio? and will it also help if i use less tinting color and i will add a little bit of clear? thanks so much 💞
You think the tint would work good with cheap waterbased clear gloss topcoat airbrush stuff from hobby lobby, rather than automotive clear coat? Its not only cheaper, but would be a way to avoid the aqua gloss stage.
The aquagloss technically is a water based clear. Problem is that it loses clarity because of tiny surface imperfections that occur as water and solvent based paints dry. With the 2k, it's catalyzed and cures extremely smooth which brings the clarity back to the finish.
@@Funclips_studios all the way back in 2012 I posted videos where I tinted water bases acrylic varnish (basically same as aquagloss) it works, just loses some reflectiveness until coated with the 2k
I really am not a fan of clearcoating metallics when possible. The way light reacts with metal is fundamentally different to dielectric materials because metals physically alter the wavelength of the light, rather than just reflect or absorb. I feel like even with the best clearcoats, it causes the prop to read as plastic rather than metal...because the clearcoat *is* plastic.
gordontarpley Also, if you can find it, check out Mirror Effect paint. It’s a surprisingly durable gold tint in a rattle can that maintains the sheen of whatever you spray it on. So glossy surfaces read like gold, but aluminum reads more like brass. Really cool stuff.
