OMG, Gordon, this is what I'm looking for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've used Rust-Oleum Gold before, and it's exactly as you described it. Every time it was touched, the paint was on the persons hand. I'm building a full scale of a 7 branch Menorah with my own design on the details. I'm trying to find a better gold paint for the project. Part of it is made of steel, and the base is wood. I wonder how this method would look on wood. I subscribed and clicked ALL. Thank you very much for sharing this technique. I'm going to give it a try on some extra wood I used for the base.
I’m going to try this clear coat over my 3PO sprayed with Revell Chrome spray paint. It’s a perfect chrome finish (the only one I’ve seen out of a can…completely reflective chrome with no primer or base coat needed), but I’ve been afraid of dulling the reflective look.
I wasn’t able to get this to succeed. It may have been due to me using a hobby airbrush instead of a spray gun like he is using, as well as the only kind of food coloring I can find is ‘gel’ instead of liquid. Either it’s too thick straight out of the bottle to spray well, or my attempts to thin it with rubbing alcohol and distilled water aren’t working at any ratio. What I did get to come out dulled the chrome finish like everything else.
Thinking of trying this technique on some of my Mandalorian pieces. It'll have a lot of rain smeared carbon. So, that would affect the mirror look anyways. Hoping to get the feel of the brass bits of USMC Dress Blues.
Just tried this technique and having some issues...after spraying the tinted DecoArt on to the bright coat chrome, it seems to just want to peel off the chrome layer. Doesn't seem to want to stick at all! Any suggestions? Should we have sealed the chrome paint with Poly first? The DecoArt also seems to not go on very evenly with the sprayer, had a hard time getting it to look even. Help?
Hi Gordon, how did you get over the liquitex air bubble issue after? The same things happening to me. It's driving me nuts. I'm using an Iwata mini spray gun on 15 psi with very light coats.
I think just thinning it a bit with some water is what helped. It's hard to say. I was actually a little reluctant to try it again because I found it so frustrating back then. I think having more painting experience has been helpful. My eye for how the paint is spraying has improved quite a bit. Basically putting down a wetter coat solved the problem
Thanks Gordon I'll try that. I'm spraying it neat as its quite thin already, that definitely could be the problem. The finish I'm getting is either too opaque and rough or smooth and tacky.👍
Love the looks of this technique. I’d love to see another video of you going demoing the process step by step!

Nice! I used your old formula on a Raiders Idol a few years back-- it turned out pretty good

Still haven’t gotten around to it, but I’m going to try it soon. I’ll comment here when I do.

Another great video!
Looks like a great technique.
eventually i will get around to building a ark of the covenant and doubling back to these videos, thanks for sharing Gordon your the best!
Gordon, one more question? What would happen if you used Rust-Oleum Gold and gave it just a clear coat of the acrylic varnish?

Did I miss what you used for the base/primer? I know it's typically either gloss white or gloss black 🤔
So then I wonder how it'd do with the same mixture but going over tbeir gold can instead of chrome!

Is the liquitex sandable/polishable? Great videos!
Is that shoe 3d printed ? Looks like it has very thin walls. Would love to know how you made it.
I’ve tried using polyurethane varnish but it all peeled off. 😢 I haven’t tried the acrylic varnish like createx. Do you water it down at all?
what kind of compressor do you use with your spray gun?
I want to make things more difficult for myself and chrome plate my project :)
Good stuff
