Can the Sonos Sub Mini really play 25 Hz?

  • The Sonos Sub Mini is a marvellous piece of engineering pushing out a lot of bass for something of this size. It reminds me of the 3-4 feet tall cylindrical subwoofers from SVS, except that this is a 1 foot tall cylinder.
    How many watts is the amplifier? How about the larger Sonos Sub? Does it really play 25 Hz? We explore all these in today's video, starting with a video clip on the actual physical force that these modern day Sonos subwoofers are capable to creating. REAL PHYSICAL FORCE that will extinguish the flame of a candle.

    Hey Pete, many thanks once more for your videos! I have received yesterday my SONOS Sub-Mini to swap it with my SONOS Sub gen. 1 and I have to say that the Mini-Sub along my SONOS Arc sound amazing! Very tight and sharp sound from that little piece of wonders... On top of that, it is fully compatible with Atmos! Many thanks as you were the trigger to make me the change...

    Omg I didn’t realize that you can set the crossover point in the amp. I set it up last year and forgot about it.
    I tried to do this exact same test last weekend but I ran into the crossover point issue and I quit.
    I’m glad you persisted! Great videos.

    Hi, love your content! The wattage drained from the wall socket is probable not very accurate as I assume the Sonos use switchmode power supply. This operates at a higher frequency than the wall socket. The actual power drawn from the wall is probably much higher than what you may measure that way. I have a 300watt (4ohm) class D NAD amplifier. It’s only rated 150watts from the mains. Your method only work with class a/b amplifiers that does not have switchmode power supply. But still a very entertaining video.

    Just because the subwoofer is moving air at 25hz doesn't mean it's playing it/is audible. I have a subwoofer in my car that definitely plays 25hz and you can hear it. The Sonos sub mini was barely playing 30hz when I tested it myself. I also have IEMs that play lower than 15hz and can hear it so I know it's not my ears. My living room is small to medium size and definitely don't think that's the issue because I walked all around the place.

    I sold my Sub gen 2 and bought a Sub mini because of your videos. I have to say that the sub mini gives way more realistic bass with my Arc en ERA 300’s and Dolby Atmos in particular. In music the drums sound more punchy and a more immersive live sound with Atmos tracks. (using Apple Dolby Atmos tracks) my Sub gen 2 was way more deep in bass to the point a had it always -5 and still lost the punchy attack of a drumkit. The Sub mini imo is the better choice for a Atmos set up. Thanx for your content. It made my Dolby Atmos experience way better

    Are your power usage numbers correct for the sub gen 2/3 at the lower range ie 25hz c. 10w draw? Also the candle test was underwhelming for the mini, does that mean minimal output in dB at 25hz?

    My sub mini arrived yesterday. I feel like the name sub mini is a misnomer. It's really not all that small. I have paired it with two 1s for rears and an arc, super impactful bass for movies so far. In my set up it def doesn't feel min...

  • @5cent27
    @5cent27 Год назад +18

    I’ve said this once and I’ll say it again. As a gen3 sub owner I don’t get a good feeling about this. First they turn down the sub gen3 and now this “mini” thing is starting to hit sub gen3 numbers. A few more “updates” (software downgrades imo) and this “mini” is going to perform better than the sub gen3. Sonos better figure this out asap (turn the gen3 sub back up) or a bose 900 with a 700 sub is in my near future. I’d rather not have to drop another $2k+ but I’m not a big fan of Sonos dictating how my sound system performs and downgrading my system with “updates”. I’m pretty discouraged at this point and probably wouldn’t recommend this system to any friends or family. 🤬🤬🤬🤬

    • @Cueto99

      Same feeling here… Sonos, why downgrade the sub gen 3?

    • @Laptopdog78
      @Laptopdog78 Год назад +3

      Wow, are you seriously saying that Sonos will send updates, and change the actual sound of these speakers based on their current sales agenda??……If i knew that this was true for a fact, then i would not buy one more speaker from them!!! (I have a few of their speakers by the way).

    • @TemujinScott80
      @TemujinScott80 Год назад

      @@Laptopdog78 no that’s not accurate. Why would a company want to lose money with a practice such as that.

    • @5cent27
      @5cent27 Год назад +3

      @@Laptopdog78 It all just seems too coincidental to not have some thread of truth. Sonos has an update that takes arguably 50%+ out of the current “big sub” and just so happens to release a smaller “mini sub”. That new “mini sub” (probably a fraction of the cost to manufacture vs the “big sub”) is putting up comparable numbers to the old “big sub”. So those of us who spent the $750 on the old “big sub” that is now completely neutered are left looking at the much cheaper “mini sub” and thinking “well if they let us pair 2 mini subs that surely will out perform the bullsh!t big sub I have. Might as well sell the big one and get 2 mini subs”. I won’t tolerate the way this current set up sounds much longer and if my only option is to buy a 2nd $750 “big sub” I’d rather start all over again with Bose and know that they wouldn’t pull this crap on me. The one thing that can happen to prove me partially correct will be when they start letting you pair 2 mini subs. So everyone wait and see.

      I will be surprised if there is any usefull output at 25hz. I have not done any other testing than playing a few movie scenes I know well. According to my ears, there is not much output below 35hz or so, but I may be wrong. No ultra low bass doesnt make Sub Mini a bad product, but if you are looking for faithfull reproduction of movie soundfx, you should look somewhere else, not Sonos, or any other small subwoofer and soundbar combo. Sonos are great at what they do, but the Arc and the Sub Mini i have in my apartment doesnt even compare to the SVS setup I have at my house.
