I've been to Brazil in my younger days, Never see such beautiful people. More so in the poorer communities where people of color call home. Out of many peoples from around the world God created some of the most beautiful people on the planet.
Canta o meu coração A alegria chegou Na manhã tão feliz Deste amor...
Watched "Black Orpheus" again on Saturday and couldn't engage the player to play the Portuguese film with subtitles and was pleasantly surprised by the beautifully dubbed English version: a surprise because I hate dubbing. Manha de Carnaval is the second most beautiful song in the world after Villa-Lobos' Melody Sentimental. Elizete Cardoso is a splendid singer. Ah Brazil. Such beauty.
Sepia Rose Hi Sepia Rose, I agree with you! I posted this because I fell in love with the movie and all its melodies not too soon after it was 1st released. If you can, please rent/buy the video "Orfeu Negro." It's from 1959 and I suggest trying to get the Portuguese version with English subtitles; not the other way around! I may be wrong, but I think this brilliant film introduced what's now known as "Bossa Nova." Though this is an amazing song, there are so many other aspects to this most beautiful of films! Best to you, varadero
varadero1839 I had to comment just to second everything you say. It's a beautiful film that helped to popularize Bossa Nova, but definitely see it in the original Portuguese with subtitles! This is the film that introduced me to the works of musical greats such as Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa. If anyone is unfamiliar with their work or that of their contemporaries in Bossa, track down their music and enjoy the beautiful soundscape.
+Sepia Rose (RETROGEMS) Sure she is... Although i couldn't understand the language but music and voice is so ethnic and awesome, i got melodious all through it....
The story, the dialogues, the photography and above all the music blend together to make one of the most beautiful films ever made. i first saw it in 1958 in New York and by 1965 I fulfilled my dream by going to Rio and finding a family to live with in a favela overlooking the entrance to the bay. I stayed with them for three years, recounted in my book At Last, Favela..Sadly, Brazilians themselves don't like Orfeu Negro and even make fun of it as "just for romantic foreigners".
This was one of the first if not the first feature length foreign films I ever saw I beleive I was about 3 or 4; I fell in love with Brazil and Marpessa Dawn ;-)

I hear this theme the first time with Shiina Ringo in a very smooth jazz version, then i realized that all that album was about all covers, so I searched for the original one of this one and found this graceful and beautiful song, thank you very much for sharing this treasure.

This song is sung in "Brazilian" Portuguese. It's a lovely song and tells about the yearly Carnaval that happens in mostly all of Brazil and lasts for about 5 days. Thanks so much for you interest, and more to follow!
This was one talented lady! I'm happy to hear back from you, and I'm delighted to have been able to share this with you! I'm clueless as to how I could thank all of the incredible people who've been kind enough to say "thanks" for this most beautiful of songs! I'm still a little perplexed by the workings of YT, and don't want to make a mistake. Thanks once more for your elegant response!
Lisa McGill Hi Ms. McGill, You kind of shook me up with your assesment. I posted this, but seemed to forget the really amusing and joyous parts of this amazing film. Thanks for shaking me back to reality! I'm very grateful. varadero
I was captivated by the movie and the music from the first time I saw it.....when it was first released. This is a true classic. I have the movie on VHS and DVD, the soundtrack on LP and CD. Thank you for posting this, one of the most beautiful songs ever played in a movie or anywhere.
it's the original...I think..........
I consider "Orfeu negro" one of the most beautiful films I have seen in my whole life. Dawn and Mello are the perfect tragic couple. I'm sorry to hear of their passing.
You couldn't have made a better choice for listening and learning! Until about 11 minutes from now we both know the singer, Elizete Cardoso, had not only a beautiful voice, but very elegant diction! If you're studying Brazilian Portuguese, listening and learning from this amazing lady will be your best teacher! Thanks so much for writing! The 11 minute remark only will attract those that say the singer is lovely Astrud Gilberto! I'm beginning to think they're a cult!
I was more like 17-18 when first I saw her and this classic! The beauty of this film, and obviously that of Marpessa, made me long to travel to Brasil. My dream came true some 4 years later when I flew on wonderful, now defunct Braniff Airlines from New York to Rio! Talk about a "milk-run!" This flight flew from NYC to MIA, then on to Panama, Lima, Sao Paulo and finally Rio! Seeing the "Christ the Redeemer" statue just prior to arrival in Rio made it all worthwhile! Thanks so much for writing!

Orfeu Negro (Black Orchids) - An award-winning song of yesteryears (1959) composed by the great Brazilian guitarist - LUIZ BONFA in the same level with Antonio Carlos Jobim and Baden Powell. A favborite song of American singer Johnny Mathis and musician Miles Davis. Tudo em !

I'm honored and grateful to hear from you gforceram! The performer, Elizete Cardoso, sings in Portuguese. She "tells" of the the happiness that will follow on the next day when Carnaval will be celebrated in Rio de Janeiro; a very important day indeed! The people seen here are the actors who were featured in this film.Very beautiful, melodic, sad and actually terrifying! "Death" plays a major role in this film! Please try to find the original Portuguese version with subtitles in English! Thanks!

No one will ever match the emotional content of this performance. Parabens, Elizete Cardoso!

Thiis is the film that turned me on to Bossa Nova. It is forever fresh and romantic
This voice is made in heaven.
Laissez Faire,
And hopefully, that's where we're likely to find the beautiful spirit of superb artist, Elizete Cardozo! Thank you so much for writing!
This melody popped into my head and won't leave! TOO beautiful.

Carnival time is here
Magical time of year
And as the time draws near
