My episode showing Daniel Warren Johnson’s art and techniques: • Daniel Warren Johnson:...
Daniel Warren Johnson has written and illustrated Beta Ray Bill, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, Murder Falcon, and Extremity. His upcoming books include Do a Powerbomb! through Image Comics and Jurassic League with DC Comics. This interview digs deep into career decisions, the brushes and pens Daniel likes to use, and his approach to writing and collaboration. We also discuss how to react to criticism, awkward convention stories, and influences from Manga to modern American creators. Развлечения

Beta Ray Bill was so good. Took me a long time to read even though it was only 5-6 issues because I kept stopping just to look at all the wild panels
We need a treasury edition of that book ASAP!
“Do A Power Bomb” is hands down the best series of the year and because of that DWJ has quickly become one of my favorite comic creators. As someone who only got back into comics last year I’ve been trying to play catch up. So far everything I’ve read from DWJ has been incredible. Amazing artist/writer and apparently an all around nice guy too. Great interview!
I would love to see a Power Ranger Story by Daniel Warren Johnson.
X2 I would like to see Johnson doing something like Mad Max but with the Rangers
Shit he would knock it out of the park if he did power rangers.
Mad Max or Red Sonja
I bought Wonder Woman Dead Earth on your recommendation! Great interview, seems like a stand up guy. Thanks for the conversation.
Been a fan of his for years now.. Literally the only working artist that can get me to buy a book from DC or Marvel.
Hell yeah! What a nice surprise. DWJ is fantastic, really looking forward to Do a Power Bomb!
DWJ is an absolutely fantastic artist!
I can't get enough of Daniel Warren Johnson, my favourite person in comics these days. My son forces me to read him Justice League every night.
Daniel Warren Johnson made me love Wonder-woman with his Dead earth series.
It's fantastic.
this guys art is just so fresh and interesting, his Superman story in the blue brought me to tears and his Beta Ray Bill mini was fun. Hopefully he gets more work from the big 2
Truly candid. Enjoyed this a lot.
I discovered Daniel Warren Johnson thanks to your channel. I can't wait to read his new comic book.
Great interview, Chris. Huge fan of Dan's work. His writing/art is top tier and got me back into comics (and wrestling for that matter) after years of being away. Everyone here should check out his Friday streams. It's super chill and really fun just hanging out with such a cool guy (and sometimes his cool dad!) and watching him do his thing. So hyped for Powerbomb! Dan, we need those shirts! \m/
My favorite interview so far!
Thanks for carrying and posting such an insightful interview! You popped all the right questions. Mr. Johnson is such a powerfully kinetic visual storyteller and hearing about his influences, his war stories with other artists in the medium (that Geof Darrow tale's heartbreaking) and his upcoming projects (his foray into writing) is exciting and inspiring. More power to your channel, Chris!
Loved the interview.
Great job!
Hell yeah my guy! I love these interviews you are doing
Awesome interview! Kinda wished we got some visuals in this video as I and many aren't too familiar with Daniels work. Still, a fantastic video! Great watch!
Great interview, nice Sunday treat, really enjoyed wonder woman dead earth and beta ray bill.keep up the great work at comic tropes.
Great interview. Love DWJ's work! I've only picked up Murder Falcon so far so obviously I've got a lot to dig into :D
This channel is definitely the reason I became a fan of Mr. Johnson
Man your interviews are criminally underappreciated
I loved this. Thank you both fine gentlemen.
The discussion of drawing tools was fascinating. I don't draw comic art but love that materials, process, and cleaning nerd out.
Man I love these interviews. It's so great seeing a medium I love so much talked about in the correct manner. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
what a fantastic talk . magic stuff
Ohh, great artist
What a great moment when you try that Pentel brush pen the first time. I'm happy for you Chris, enjoy it.
Awesome interview, love DWJ. Ill have to checkout Do a Powerbomb.
FANTASTIC interview
"Has there ever been a successful pro wrestling comic in America?" See the work of Jaime Hernandez in "Love and Rockets" and "Whoa Nellie."
Oh man, great point. I love Love and Rockets.
@@ComicTropes I knew it was just a momentary blank of the kind we all do... I believe I recall you doing a Love and Rockets video early on in this series.
DWJ and I share a love of the same style of wrestling. Really amped for "Do A Powerbomb"!
Never read murder Falcon or Extremity, need to get on those. Really enjoyed Do A Power Bomb and his Wonder Woman.
Amazing... Thanks super fun and serious at same time. I love Daniel work. Top3 my writers and artists.
Cool interview with a talented artist. And let's get a crowd-funded printing going for Chris's 60 page childhood Transformers comic---I'd love to see that thing!
I do have an episode where I share the first half of it. It is not a brilliant comic.
@@ComicTropes I look forward to checking it out. Thanks!
Great artist this guy. Thank you.
Love this interview and DWJ is an awesome artist and human being!
(And I swear... That Geof Darrow story is gonna go down as one the greatest unsolved mysteries in comic book history hahahaha...)
Doesn't get better than this. This guy is the real deal
Yeeyy. DWJ is amazing. I just read Murder Falcon and loved it. Already have Beta Ray Bill #1 and gonna order all the Extremity issues i can find here (i don't live in the United States).
I think DWJ is a worthy successor to Nausicaa (which I just finished reading two weeks ago). I find DWJ's stuff so emotional in a similar way. Crap, I need to read Murder Falcon right away. So much heart in his work!
Excellent interview. By BOTH of you. I loved the remark that teaching seventh graders made you WANT to go back to your art. As in, a MUCH better option. ❤️
Ive been using that pocketbrush too. Fun tool...
Absolutely LOVED Extremity; the art and story are both exceptional. I would really love to read more stories in that world. Have Murder Falcon HC on pre-order and very much looking forward to it (had to fast forward a bit when Dan said "spoilers").
That was great. You two worked well together.
Cheers Chris
"LiL'JpD."
Dan made his Beta Ray Bill one of my favorite comics of that year. Such dynamism! His work is immediately recognizable, and such a breath of fresh air amongst the kind of work evident in a lot of X-Men comics, for instance, where it's too occupied with 'realism' in depiction. I prefer Dan's work being so stylistic and energetic.
Riding with DWJ since Extremity
What couple of really cool guys.
Badass
Super insightful and inspiring
As a fan of comics and wrestling I hope this book is excellent! I added this to my pull list when I saw this in previews on the title alone.
Also go Ace!!
we've got Daniel Warren Johnson interview, Cartoonist Kayfabe guys are talking about comic with Geof Darrow etc, man we're spoiled
I'd love to see a video about Death-Stalker, a Daredevil villain from the 70s with great potential if he was brought back.
I want to see Daniel do a Invincible story
Do a Power Bomb! Great channel!
As a fellow Chicago artist who's met Darrow a few times (I actually went to art school with his nephew) I completely believe that story. Putting that much detail into your art has to require a certain intensity.
38:27 Valley of the Winds!
I would love to know where I should check out in Japan! Me and my wife are planning a trip and would love to know

Great interview! I learned a lot about the guest, the host, and the medium.
def turned me onto him. the wonder woman book was great. not my stile of art, but i allowed myself to stretch and appreciatee it. i usually discover that many artists im cold for become memorable once i give them a chance.
Such a great interview. So much positive energy.
Besides Crimson Cage, which was mentioned, Ringside is another great wrestling comic if interested.
Cool video.
Chris, when are you going to make a video on Irv Novick?
Skybound MUST release a b&w version of your TRANSFORMERS.
Did you update that intro sequence? It looks a smidge different!
Wrestling Comic worth checking out (not a satelite to a promotion) La Mano Del Destino/ The Hand of Destiny by J. Gonzo!
DWJ is so good.
Can we get a movie based off of his trip to Japan pls
I don't recall this guy ever being mentioned in the same scene as the people i think he's referring to.
And tbh if he was, who the hell cares. His book is good and anybody can like them.
What was the store with all the screen tone called ?
Sekaido.
@@ComicTropes Thank you !
So I learned from this that we are all flawed human beings, even Geoff Darrow.
Awesome, thanks, stay blessed and all in Jesus shalom
😃👍
Your earlier episode on Dan turned me onto his work, glad you got this interview, and it is a good one. Murder Falcon rules.
The random stuff is what ruins me. I can't just draw a good phone or house. I can draw a skull or explosion but in every day life how often is there a skull or explosion??? And houses aren't as exciting.
Maybe just draw a house in shape of a skull or something like this.
Struggle session.
Just an FYI U may have heard George Perez just passed away .
ohhhh punch somebody, tough guy here.
Less interventions and explanations from the host would be appreciated.
Exciting?
