Invincible was a superhero comic that started in 2003 and ran for 15 years. Written by Robert Kirkman with art from Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, the book was a coming of age story where Mark Grayson gains strength and flight from his alien heritage. But the book went through many different arcs and is now adapted into a hit Amazon animated show. In this episode, I sit down with Comic Drake and GodzillaMendoza for a wide-ranging discussion of our favorite elements, what the adaptation may do better, and similar recommendations.

Kirkman´s Fire Power is like Invincible and it´s Shounen manga references are more obvious than Invincible where it can be summed up as references to the fascist Saiyan society and how they grow stronger after near death.
Invincible is a weird book as it is as emotionally draining and dark as it gets but the comic also plays topes straight while deconstructing them on the side so you rarely focus on the dour elements. The hyper-stylized art and the bright colors also help.

A single main storyline with a proper beginning, middle and end. It has a plan for its characters and sticks to them, no BS retcons or reboots, deaths are important and have consequences, characters are allowed to change and grow.
Its a conventially well written super hero comic that avoids nearly all the pitfalls DC and Marvel made for themselves

I've known about the series since around 2018 because of its popularity and finally gave it a read. It's one of the best comics I've ever read, and Mark is one of my top 5 superheroes of all time now. I love the irony of how Nolan's fake story of the Viltrumites that he told Mark as a kid became a reality at the end of the series.

the sexual assault part was kinda messed up and the perpetraitor did get off easy but what I really liked about that part of the story was the aftermath of that. Mark and his son (the product of this assault) talking about both of their feelings regarding their relationship to one another felt sad, complicated, sincere and somewhat sweet.

There's never a point where it's like "you did this terrible thing, and this is how you're going to be brought to justice."
There's just the sort of meta level of character did bad thing so character dies horribly later but what she did and the death aren't actually connected.

I agree that actions and stories having consequences made Invincible great. I think Kirkman learned that from Erik Larsen---although Savage Dragon used universe jumping resets to subvert that at times. I like when Bulletproof became Invincible in the book. The size of the cast was huge that Invincible felt like a real world and not just a city in need of protection.

Regarding the SA discussion: I'm strongly against cutting it out. It's already such a rare thing to see in popular media and I feel like cutting it out is simply shying away from it out of fear of backlash or even fear of messing it up again.
Like Chris said, and even Robert Kirkman himself, this adaptation allows improvement upon the original source now that everything is on the table and we know where everything goes.
I think they should do their research, talk to victims and gain a deeper understanding of the issue and execute it better than the comic did.
And this wouldn't just be for the sake of making a better story, but also because it's such an important topic and they have the potential to spark a greater discussion on the topic that still, to this day, has a gross culture sorrounding it. From people denying its existence, to people saying they're "jealous" it didn't happen to them and all that nonsense. I would be immensely disappointed if they cut it.

54:38 I think this is actually a great idea, Nolan confronts her, she leaves in shambles and flies back to Earth and we are introduced to her Earth partner. She breaks down in his arms and there is some dialog where she admits what she did and who her other son's father is. The audience could see that she now understands what she did, how wrong it was and now she's repentant. Much better than her saying sorry during a fight.

What’s so great about Evil Gory Superman, I mean, Invincible?
One word: blood. Lots of it.

Although I'm a huge fan of Baki and have watched both the original OVA and anime' before the Netflix adaptation/sequels, and read the entire series up to the latest arc in Bakidou (excluding all the spin-off series), I have to say that a better recommendation is a manga series not that many people even know about called "Koukou Tekkenden Tough". A little difficult to find but highly worth it. It does have an anime OVA adaptation called "Shootfighter Tekken" which is great and dubbed. It's very similar to Baki however I'd personally say the series leans ever so slightly more into realism. The story is about a high schooler named Kiibo who dreams of becoming the next Bruce Lee while being trained by his father in the family's secret martial art of "Nadashinkage-ryu" until an encounter one night with a professional wrestler turns the wrestling world against him and threatens him that if he should ever lose he must reveal to the worst the secrets of the ancient martial art. The plot does go into more detail about Kiibo's father and why exactly although Kiibo wants to be Bruce Lee, his own abilities may actually greatly surpass that of his idol's. A lot of the wrestling world within the manga actually offers loads of respect for what wrestlers often go through it's honestly amazing. If I had to describe it in simpler words, the series really makes you feel what it truly means to be "tough".

I think the lack of resolution in Anissa's actions needs to stay that way.
How many people that have similar experiences get that closure? Not many.
It's more powerful for Mark to have a real set of experiences. I do agree, however, that Nolan being better would improve the direction of that arc.

I have zero interest in the live action adaptation which is apparently in the works. The cartoon is so good and should take precedence as the definitive adaptation without having to be 'legitimised' as a live action piece.

Fans of Invincible should really check out the webcomic Strong Female Protagonist.
The premise is that one of the most powerful superheroes in the world reveals her secret identity and quits being a superhero after her arch-enemy reveals a terrible secret to her. Like Invincible, this comic deals with real world issues and has a progressing story with real consequences. Some of the main themes of SFP revolve around what it means to be a hero and the ethics of wielding incredible power.
Can’t recommend the webcomic enough. One of my favorite stories, ever.

    Spoiler alert...........................................................
With the Anissa issue and not having a clear resolution. I like that choice because sometimes there isn't a resolution on the offender. And that sucks but it brings a bit of reality to the situation. And we get Mark's growth from it.

I can only hope to make a superhero comic as good as Invincible. It's an inspiration to it. Even made an entire race inspired by the Viltumites (called them Trilovites because I'm not good with alien names.)

Couple of reasons I dont say Superman is because Supes doesnt really focus on adolescence and is infallable. Kryptonite is such an afterthought that its kind of boring. I love that Invincible isnt Invincible
