This year, Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary by bringing back some of its most popular actors: David Tennant and Catherine Tate. But this time, the 14th Doctor and Donna Noble are in an adventure that comes from the Doctor Who comic strips. This episode explains the history of Marvel UK making Doctor Who comics with Pat Mills, John Wagner, Dave Gibbons, Dez Skinn and more. It breaks down the plot of one of the most popular 1980 comics, The Star Beast, and contrasts it with the tv adaptation by Russell T. Davies for the BBC. And it discusses why this specific comic was selected for adaptation.

Dave Gibbons art from this era is just staggering I think he may be one of the all time greats. He simplified his line work for Watchmen still with impeccable story telling.
He has signed my issue 1 of Watchmen.

Pat Mills is one of the greats of British comics and doesn’t get anywhere near enough recognition for his contribution.
At least Mills got a credit for his original story in the special’s opening credits.
Glad you're covering this. There is such a treasure trove of British comics unknown to American audiences, Marvel UK, Battle, Action, Star Lord and of course 2000ad such an excellent proving ground for the British Invasion that came along and dominated American comics in the 80s
I've been a fan of this channel for about 5 years but I've been a fan of Doctor Who for over 40 years. I got into it when I was about 5, Tom Baker was my Doctor.
I had no idea that you were also a fan too!
To me the Meep's secret psychotic thoughts were the best part of the comic, they were so fun and generally I prefer tension over suprise. Knowing more than characters is a good device in itself. Interestingly Russell himself says it wasn't his idea to delay the reveal, originally in the script had the Meep saying similar stuff every time Rose turned away and apparently Russell is still 50/50 torn on it.
I've never seen a single episode, so I can honestly say that YOU are my favourite Doctor, Chris.
The second special, Wild Blue Yonder, is amazing and a great way to check if Doctor Who is for you, very easy to digest knowing nothing of the show

@@randy_stoneyeh it’s really not the prefect episode to jump in at all, it spoils loads of plot, and requires you to have seen 15 years worth of tv. So even if you did ever want to start, 100% DO NOT start with wild blue yonder
@@randy_stone If you ever want to start watching Doctor Who, I'd rather recommend episodes like Rose, Spearhead From Space, or Robot.
Fudge's mom and her nonchalance in the face of extraordinary circumstances was sorely missed in the adaptation.
Dave Gibbons's depiction of Tom Baker was brilliant. So many depictions of various Doctors, eg in the Doctor Who annuals, missed the mark - failed to capture the features/character. The new era of Doctor Who never gelled with me. Tuned in to some stories but my interest drifted. For me, the Doctor's value in the classic series was that he was an avuncular alien character. His obvious affection for his companions didn't cross over into romantic feelings. When that happened, it seemed to flatten him - make him earthly and mundane. But I treasure the decades of timeless classic stories.
I recently re-read The Star Beast. Hadn't read it since I was a child when it was originally published. Could remember every panel, memories came flooding back. Enjoyed the new episode, but there were more lines and ideas from the comic I wish they'd included. Wish they'd do this every season, maybe City of the Damned, that was such a good story!
I was the opposite with Human Nature and Jubilee. After watching Dalek and the Family of Blood two parter. I went back to their respective source material. Jubilee is such a different beast to Dalek, I was genuinely surprised.
I'd love to see Spare Parts faithfully adapted next.
After watching H.Bomber Guy's video on plagiarism I've developed a new appreciation for creators who work so hard to make these videos.

Yes, Gareth Edwards is a film director. Gareth Roberts is a transphobic dickhead who has written some pretty good Doctor Who stories.
Thank you for going over the comic that was adapted for the show! My favorite doctors are the Fourth and Tenth doctors, so it is really fun that the original story was a Fourth Doctor story but the show has the Tenth(?) Doctor.
I'd read that this episode had been adapted from a comic! Glad I could find some more info on it, can't believe Dave Gibbons was involved! What a crossover!
It's so awesome that, because of Doctor Who, we got Watchmen, and also V for Vendetta! This year I had the chance to talk with David Lloyd at a local con, and he seemed very fond of those "wild years" drawing for Doctor Who magazine.
At Chicago Tardis Rachel Talalay said that the idea for bringing Donna back was actually from Catherine Tate who suggested to Russell Davies that she and David come back.
The Fourth Doctor, which one of the local Public Television stations was airing on Sunday mornings when I first moved to New York City.
My favorite NuWHO Doctors are David Tennant and Peter Capaldi, but I count them differently from Classic WHO.
The 12th Doctor is my favorite. It was a long back-and-forth between him and the 10th but 12 has connected with me in ways that have given me a greater appreciation of both Classic and New Who.
Oh wow, that art is exceptional. Of course it's Gibbons but like before Watchman, he's really giving a lot for this one! Amazing video.
I like how the show has adapted older comics and novels (including most famously Human Nature) but it’s hell for fans who want to fit everything into the same continuity. Always fun to see how the same stories are adapted to different Doctors’ personalities and to the different styles between the short serialized Classic show and the longer but more episodic new show.
A rare comic-book-advantage of coming from Britain is getting hold of a full set of Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly/Magazine! The originals are in black and white, though.
The 10th doctor is my favorite since you can feel the love Tennant has for the role.

I'm 53 and Tom Baker was my Time Lord when I was growing up. I loved the show, but was simultaneously terrified by it. Interestingly, I found the second 60th Anniversary Special, Wild Blue Yonder, quite eerie and unnerving, so it really felt like old times!
You've probably had a million people tell you this already but I'm pretty sure the reason the TV companions didn't appear in the DWM comic strips was because Marvel UK were unable to secure the likeness rights to draw the actors (I think because of money[?] but don't quote me on that). Certainly that was the reason why the Master never looked like Roger Delgado or Antony Ainley whenever he appeared in strips from around that time. In Ainley's case, it was because they were never able to agree on a deal - Ainley was really shrewd about getting the best deal for himself with this sort of thing which often made life difficult for licencees looking to use him or his likeness for DW's expanded media (hence why he never performed in any of the audio dramas as the Master, either).
I knew it: Chris was a Time Lord all along.
PS - The title, Star Beast, was also the original title of the Alien movie script. So there are a few ties-in to that film.
Finding out you love Doctor Who as well is just so great. I've been exposed to Doctor Who thanks to the Eccleston era, and watched till the late Matt Smith saga to the early Peter Capaldi stuff (that was all that was aired on the open brazilian TV network as far as I know)
It is easy to say it's the greatest sci fi TV show ever to me.
It's amazing how jolly it gets only to be so dark, scary, dense and be silly and fun again.
So yeah Chris, like the 9th doctor would say: Fantastic!
I thought it was odd when I saw the credit for Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons. Didn’t realise it’s because it was adapting a comic.
There was a bit more to why Russell T. Davies brought back Tennant and Tate. For starters, Ncuti Gatwa would have still been shooting BARBIE at the time they would have had to start shooting anything for the 60th anniversary. Secondly, Davies felt that since honoring the show's past would have been expected by audiences, it would have overshadowed the introduction of an all-new Doctor. Tennant said that the idea that Davies originally approached him with was NOT having Jodie Whitaker's Doctor regenerate into him. Instead, it would have been an untold tale from the 10th Doctor and Donna's time together. Tennant didn't explain the exact plot, saying only that he loved it and hopes that one day, they'll be able to do it.
Great episode, Chris! My entire Doctor Who experience is limited to when I would catch an episode every now and then when I was a kid. Fourth Doctor. I didn't understand a lot of what was going on but I always enjoyed watching it because it was so out there. I've really been interested in digging into it deeper lately. I guess I'll start at the beginning? It's a lot of material to explore, but I've got time. (See what I did there?) Thank for all you do, and I'm looking forward to the next one! Salute!
Forgive the correction but it's the British Broadcasting Corporation, not the British Broadcasting Channel - the channels are named BBC1, BBC2, and later 3, 4, etc.
Who is my favourite Doctor? Why the Doctor of course.
The Doctor is not for Christmas or fir a new regeneration.
The Doctor is for life...
And as a 70 year old Whovian (one of the originals you might say) I know. Just love this magic for what it is. 60 years of different writers, creativity evolving the character, spin offs, merchandise etc.
Doctor Who is a living breathing phenomenon being created and reinvented to fit the zeitgeist of the time.
So enjoy The Giggle, 'cos my pal St Russ has things up his sleeve, yet to be revealed.. Hehe!

Had no idea that the were doing a special with Tennant as the Doctor again. Definitely gonna be checking it out, he was my favorite. Funnily enough, second favorite was Tom Baker! Cool that there's some entanglement with the two on this special.

I’m 51 and the 4th Doctor, Tom Baker was definitely the best of them I reckon. Living in the UK was all about Doctor Who & 2000ad seeing as Marvel comics were harder to get where I lived. It’s cool that the USA in recent years has recently begun appreciating the writers and artists of these great comics
I remember back in 1980, when I was a young snot working part time at a comic shop in Kirkland (WA), Doctor Who had a four issue stint in "Marvel Premier" (#57-60, also Wagner/Mills/Gibbons reprints from DW Weekly - yeah, I had to look it up).
Those issues just rotted on the stand - nobody but a couple hardcores bought them. We attributed this to the fact that, as opposed to many other markets around the US, our local Public Television (KCTS) didn't show DW, thus there wasn't much of a fan base here in the PNW (although the PBS station down the road in Tacoma (KBTC) did start showing them a few months later...but trying to get decent reception up here from their small transmitter was a roll of the dice at best).
Which is a shame because it took me 35-years to become the massive Doctor Who fan I am today.
Anyway, just something I remembered while watching this entry.

_Slaine: The Horned God_ is one of the best graphic novels ever written, yet its virtually unknown in the US.
_Marshall Law_ is probably his most notorious work.
Garth Ennis cites _Charley's War_ as what made him want to become a comics writer.
_Nemesis the Warlock_ is one of my all-time favorites.
And of course, there's everything Mills did for _Judge Dredd._
All these should be covered, they're classics.
I recently watched all the Peter Capaldi Doctor Who, such a great run. My favorite Doctor Who comic involved the Seventh Doctor hunting for Chestnuts to play a game called Conkers, as he hunts in medieval England (because that is where in time the chestnuts are best) he muses about who started this game only for us the readers to realize at the end that the Doctor started the game LOL :P
It's hard to pick one because there are things I like about each of the Doctors.
My favorite doctor is 11th so Matt Smith. Doctor Who is fantastic that it just like it's main character it keeps changing and evolving rather than remaining same.

I'm a big Who fan, really cool to see you covering something I enjoy. I'm not huge into comic books but I like your videos, partly because you quite often go into the making of and the industry which I find interesting. It's cool that you don't limit yourself too strictly to only American comic books, I've enjoyed your videos about other artists (the video on Tintin and Osamu Tezuka for example).

I haven't read The Star Beast (plan to), but I had been exposed to Beep the Meep via a sixth Doctor audio called The Ratings War. So sadly I wasn't too surprised by anything in the episode. I did enjoy it a lot though! The audio story is fun, I'd recommend it to any Who fans especially if they want more Beep the Meep.
Love the DWM comic! The 8th doctor and wilderness years comics in particular are a big love of mine. The strip has been written by creators as diverse and well known as Grant Morrison, Paul Cornell, Dave Gibbons, Jamie Delano, and Dan Abnett with backup strips by people as famous as Alan Moore, it really is a who’s who (heh) of British comic creators.
The titan comics have also had A listers working on them, with Al Ewing’s eleventh Doctor run being a particular favourite of mine.
The wrarth warriors and their ship remind me of the bad guys and gal of the Starfleet puppet show
I'm a big fan of Doctor who and my favorite Doctor is the one that I was introduced to when I found the show as a kid which was Tom Baker (the 4th doctor). So thank you for doing this video. I know who Beep the Meep so, but never knew any details about his original story.😊
To be fair, there probably was enough material for an hour. They cut out loads of material, a lot of the best (and most RTD!) stuff.
"Mrs Higgins, you have aliens at the bottom of your garden", the Meep on the bus, the tea party with the Wrarth Warriors, the stomach bomb.... my favourite story of that run is the much under appreciated City of the Damned. "Bara Bara, the blood beast!"

I liked how the show adapted the comic, though I still prefer the comic overall. I've decided I'm going to headcanon the TV version of The Star Beast as being the result of the Time War changing events so the original comic version didn't happen, which explains why the Doctor doesn't remember Beep the Meep.

David Tennant is easily my favorite Doctor I'm so glad he's back for the 60th anniversary. I had no idea this episode was based on a comic. Awesome video!
I remember thundercats doing an episode dealing with this exact issue about apareances back in the 80s where the bad guy was a cool robot and the good guy was a beast like being.
Edit: my favourite Doctor was the 9th. Thev10th is a close second tho but the 9th was "FANTASTIC!"

As with most fans, I have a favourite _Classic Era_ Doctor and a favourite from Nu Who. The 2nd Doctor is my favourite from Classic, the 9th Doctor is my Nu Who choice. However my absolute favourite - *my* Doctor - is the 8th Doctor. Largely informed by his extensive audio range.

Have you considered checking out the work of Sergio Toppi? His artwork highly influenced Bill Seinkeiwicz, Dave Mckean, Walt Simonson and more.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Alan Moore couple of stories he did, none of them actually having the Doctor.

A slight correction: You appear to have forgotten that Marvel's first Doctor Who stories appeared in their tryout title Marvel Premiere № 57 - 60. On the other hand, *I* had forgotten that they had ever begun putting those stories out under just "Doctor Who"! BTW, the issues titled Doctor Who featured great new covers by Dave Gibbons, and the Marvel Premiere ones featured great new covers by Walter Simonson and others.
Those were reprints of stories from Doctor Who Weekly.
Since you're recommendimg where to get the comic at the end, it's worth pointing out that it's just been republished in The Fourth Doctor Anthology paperback for much cheaper than The Dave Gibbons Collection.
Unfortunately, the new collection by Panini isn’t paying the writers and artists any royalties on it.

My favorite Doctor is David Tennant. I love all of them, but Tennant is THE Doctor.
Hi Chris great episode thankfully I watched Doctor who already because I didn't know about the twist so I was surprised when I saw the tv show. The recreation in live action of the Meep and the voice actress was really good. I got into the new version of Doctor who a bit later than it premiered but I was hooked, I watch every single episode of new who and we even where so lucky to get a theater showing by purely fan demands of the 50th anniversary. I am a Whovian through and through. Although I have a soft spot for the short run of Christopher eccleston because he was my first doctor (and I think he was great in the part) my favorite still is David Tennant but I love the character any every actor who portrayed always treated with such love and respect they all bring their A game. I'm all for more comic tropes about Doctor who comics!

Some British dialects pronounce “Roth” where Americans would say “rath” for wrath.
My aunt bought me that Doctor Who #1 waaaay back in the early 90s back when I first started collecting. I always wondered why it looked so blurry.
Peter Davison, still my favorite actor to play the Doctor. The 5th Doctor was like Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Charlie Brown; the Eternal Loser. He had the best intentions in the world but sometimes things didn’t turn out like he planned. Examples, the endings of Warriors Of The Deep and Earthshock.
One of my favourite Pat Mills comics is Charley's War which he did for Battle Picture Weekly with drawings by Joe Colquhoun. It's an incredibly bleak story following the title character through the horrors of the western front of WW1, with really intense black and white art by Colquhoun.
Sylvester Mccoy the 7th doctor is my favorite. Loved the snarky personality.
