Apple released the 2019 Mac Pro at their WWDC keynote to much applause. Sure, things like iPadOS, system-wide dark mode, and the creation of Project Catalyst (formerly known as Marzipan) which allows you to run iOS apps on the Mac are all major software changes, but the new Mac Pro looks amazing. The question is, can the 2019 Mac Pro compete with desktop workstation PCs using its server-grade hardware or is it just too expensive and overpriced like Macs of recent years? Snazzy Labs analyzes the new Mac Pro and its Intel Xeon W Cascade Lake CPUs.
Only 1.5 TB of RAM. A sentence I wouldn't have even dared imagine I'd hear.

@TheLuchsKing yes that is true. However they pitched the pc to the entire world. Last I checked your average person doesn't need a 50k computer. Also their base mac's spec is laughable. 256GB ssd? For a 6grand build? LOL. Only a 8 core processor? Only 16gb ram? FOR 6 GRAND? People put the same pc together for around $2500. What an insane markup. Mac+Monitor+stand+tax= $14000.
For $14k I put a 32 core thread ripper build together. Includes 128 gb of ram at 3600mhz, TWO 2080ti 11gb gpus, 4tb ssd, 4tb NVME, 10TB HDD, THREE 5k MSI monitors, AND I even included all the little things like mouse/keyboard/headphones. My ending price was $12.5 grand.

I'm a design pro and have been in the biz for years. As someone who has both experience using a wide variety of PC's and Mac's, I can honestly say that for the price Apple is asking for this rig is outlandish. You're better off buying the Imac pro to supply your work needs IF you necessarily need to use an Mac. Just for the price they're asking you can custom build a PC whereas maybe get the parts on sale or not for a hell of a lot cheaper and/or powerful to exactly to your own specifications. It's a well known fact that Apple doesn't like people messing with the internals of their machines, so getting a custom PC for your everyday heavy work usage would be a better investment if not for the price, just for the added comfort of swapping parts effortlessly.
Did you see the presentation? Apple has emphasized that you can swap virtually everything in here. It supports anything that can fit in a PCIe slot (GPUs, audio cards, etc), CPU/RAM/storage expansion, etc.
At least you won't need a space heater with the 1400w power supply.

And flawed as a marketing option given the base model really does not have a natural home with any user. Serious pro's won't buy it, and it's far to expensive for ambitious amateurs. As a statement purchase I'm sure some boutique companies may buy one to put on reception, but that's about it. For reviewers, the mileage on comparisons to significantly cheaper PC's and other similarly capable Mac's is there but may backfire on Apple.
All of them are aimed at RUclipsrs who have literally no idea what a computer even is, they just hear higher numbers and nod along. Even the highest end 35k model, no professional is buying that garbage, you can get the same power for 6 grand, the same price of the base model, it's a outright scam.

Yawn, Since the adoption of the x86 platform and the adoption of the Intel Roadmap, the Mac has literally been "just a PC" - which renders the absurdly expensive pricing absurd.
What is amazing is the STILL widespread notion - both in the consumer space and in Pro-IT - that the Mac is NOT "just a PC".
Apple is the Gucci purse of the tech world. That's the only reason their still around.
The absurd pricing is absurd...?
It IS just a PC, but to be fair, a pretty unique one. And some of the addon cards, like the Afterburner, are unavailable or difficult to find similar products elsewhere. It's really more comparable to a high end workstation like a Dell Precision or HP Z than it is to a run of the mill gaming PC.
@@calumdunn9554 Yes. Not only is their entire line of "literally just PCs " absurd, but this model is similarly priced absurdly.
@@EssenceofPureFlavor Sorry, but the inclusion of proprietary technology with no other driving forces than the machine itself, insures that it is a dead end soon to be orphaned platform - just as the trashcan that promised all sorts of upgradability to be orphaned. To address the ‘should have used AMD Threadripper’ comments:
First off, I love AMD’s current CPU lineup and I’d currently pick one of their chips for a personal build. But we’re not taking about our personal builds here, we’re talking about Apple’s top of the line workstation.
While Threadripper (TR) has much better price per performance than the Xeons Apple chose, TR doesn’t currently support more than 128 GB of RAM, has lower single thread performance, and only had 4 channel memory vs the 6 provided by the Xeons.
That said, AMD does have a line of chips that is made to better compete with Xeon. AMD’s EPYC lineup supports much more RAM than TR (not sure how much exactly though), has eight channel memory, and up to 128 PCIe lanes (if not always, I can’t remember anymore). So EPYC is the real competition to these Intel chips. While I don’t know what their prices are like, they are definitely better than these Xeons, but still not cheap.
So really your argument should be, ‘Should have used AMD EPYC’.
However, the biggest issue I see (can’t say if Apple has some sort of agreement with Intel to only use their chips, as Quinn mentioned) is that that of design philosophy. And that is why I believe Apple chose Intel’s Xeons over EPYC.
Apple’s design lines up with Intel’s CPU design more than it does with AMD’s. Apple is about using the ‘best of the best’ with no compromise (except when it comes to thermals apparently... come on Apple!) where AMD is more about balance. Put simply, Intel delivers the type of CPU that is closer to what Apple wants.
They want the highest possible performance, even if it comes at a higher cost.
Intel’s chips cost more because they are monolithic versus AMD’s Zen based chips which use relatively cheap ‘cookie cutter’ four and eight core designs they can stick together with infinity fabric. The extra glue (glue is the proper industry term actually) in between AMD’s Zen cores is the type of compromise Apple prefers to avoid if possible. I love it, despite its performance hits, because it provides a more balanced system for less money, and I think it’s a great design for those who can live with the compromise. But this machine is all about ‘no compromise’.
Bonus point: switching to EPYC would also mean rebuilding/changing a whole bunch of the tools, firmware, and drivers that Apple currently uses. They’d then have to validate and prove the reliability of these brand new tools and drivers and all of that other junk that comes with such a switch, all for their lowest volume product that also needs to be their most reliable. Not much incentive to switch there. But again, I see design philosophy as treason number one they don’t use AMD. If Apple wanted to switch they’d be able to humor through these hoops and make it work. I just don’t see them wanting too (especially with a potential switch to their one ARM based chips potentially in the works already).
Reed Harston Interesting perspective. Thanks.

Apple should have gone the ThreadRipper / Epyc route. Cheaper, faster, better motherboard lifetime.
I think only TR3000 would be good enough, but it's not out yet.
The problem is a lot of pro programs being used are not optimized for AMD hardware so the programs don't end up properly using all the power that the thread ripper can offer. AMD has been battling this for a couple years now but I just don't really seem them add optimization for them cuz they don't care about them.
@@nathanielmobley4362 Apple is big enough to easily put pressure on software vendors to optimize for AMD hardware. They're already doing that with the GPUs. They had slides listing a lot of pro software vendors who are working to support the Mac Pro GPUs. It would be trivial for Apple to do the same for CPUs if they wanted to.
@@1idd0kun Well then you run into the other problem of a lot of people pushing stuff to render farms and such for big projects and Intel completely controls the server market ( having about 97%-98% of the entire server market). That aside while Apple could do that they don't want to because in a couple years they're going to move to their own CPU that they manufacture and control. That's their long term goal, so I have a feeling that they're just sticking with Intel until they can finalize their desktop-class CPUs but seeing as how the chip in the iPad pro outperforms a lot of i7s on the market I don't think it will be that long. That's when they'll put the pressure on the market to do what they want and give optimization to them. They could really care less about AMD tbh.
@@nathanielmobley4362 I don't know why Apple went with Intel and I don't care. Everyone after monday‘s event (where Apple got more serious about pros than anyone anticipated): „The new Mac is ridiculously expensive. It costs as much as a car and the old cheesegrater Mac maxed out at $15000. Nobody can afford this thing. lol“
What the actual F!?!? This is exactly what every professional wanted and more. It’s one of the few times Apple sat down with people to hear what they wanted and they gave it to them. Including the effing wheels that they had never offered by themselves. And what does the Internet do? Complain.
It’s a niche product. Actually, if the niche had a niche, that’s where the Mac Pro would be, but it completes the lineup.
Consumers: Mac Mini, iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook
Consumers who do the occasional video/photo/3D editing: iMac, MacBook Pro, iMac Pro
Professionals like photographers, web/product designers/architects: iMac Pro, MacBook Pro
Professionals that do work the iMac Pro can’t handle anymore, like video production studios, rendering studios, some audio producers, NASA: Mac Pro.
While the list isn’t comprehensive, if you don’t belong to the last group, just kindly STFU.
It’s the equivalent to a race car. Nobody would complain about the ridiculously high price of a formula one car, or NASCAR. Because if you don‘t dress up to race around the track every Sunday, you won’t need it, so it doesn’t matter if it costs a million, two or three. But if you do, there’s no substitute. And if you truly need it, the price doesn’t matter.
this racecar take is actually spot on
Yeah agree, apple really meant pro this time 1.5 tb of ram is insane with 4 Vega GPUs for 128gb of video memory is insane. From what I read apple sent teams to actual studios to find out what they really want to try to make a computer for actual pros
M1 LAUGHS AT THIS VIDEO!!!
thank you so much for the content man! You said exactly what I thought about this machine and sadly didn't have the words to say for my friends here in Brazil! Sharing this RIGHT NOW!
Been a mac pro user since 2009 , had a 2009 8 core mac pro and a 6 core 2013 mac pro, i almost fell off my chair when insaw the new mac pro!! And instantly fell in love with apple again, finally!!! They listened!!!
A lot of people forgot Steve Jobs quote about design!!
Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.
How did you go about creating this video, point out the pros and cons and the pricing but not mention the $1,000 stand!!!!
Because he's an Apple fanboy...
Don't forget apple buys these parts in bulk = cheaper
MX MXKN no they’re probably not, you don’t understand these computers are for the extreme 1% who can spend tens of thousands of dollars. I mean for perspective look at your smartphone camera and then look at a RED camera, from afar they’re not so different but pros will surely tell you the 50k price difference is worth it. Not many people are the audience for this PC so I don’t think Apple may be buying in bulk
@@TheSilverrMC lol do you really think they pay retail price for the parts? of fucking course they "buy in bulk".
Let me get this straight, you say once you go up from the base model the price for performance will be more reasonable and then immediately say but we don't know what that will cost? Come on man, don't be quite so much of a fan boy. I mean they're finally offering something impressive, but they're also doing it at such an outrages price it doesn't make sense. The only exception would be utilizing those custom cards AMD built, simply because there isn't anything else with that power on the market. If NVLink wasn't limited to 2 cards it might be different.
Wow you're the first reviewer that actually said that they wanted this expensive cheese grater. Lol
NASA :- We have the most powerful PC ever!
Apple:- Hold my Stand
Pretty sure NASA Computers still more powerful and not available in the consumer market
apple the most powerfull pc.. not really, most powerfull cheese grater.. sure.
Steve Jobs would have a heart attack if he saw the $999 Apple stand
Apple: makes normal computer
Everyone: encredible job you passed all our expectations
Any other tech companies that make a pc that can be upgraded: we did that to
Everyone:.....
Your enthusiasm for this new Mac Pro is awesome.
Cheers. ;)
This is actually the best video on the Mac Pro that I’ve seen on RUclips. Some of the different components on the computer were explained or put into context better than some of the other guys. (I’m not really a computer nerd!) So 👍
Do I not see four USB-C ports and an HDMI port above the power supply at about 6:12?
Jep
That's the graphics card, so it's likely only DisplayPort over USB-C.
8 cores, 32gb ram and 256gb SSD screams "pro"...
Hey, it also comes with a $100 RX580 from 2016!
We can build a pc with the exact same spec for $600 but shhhhh, don't tell them, let them waste their money, it's hilarious.
Well done Apple! A true professional's machine and some genuinely useful steps forward for the iPad.....Thank you Snazzy Labs for a frank and accurate report! i feel that the $6k machine may find homes in dedicated server spaces not as workstations...Apple engineers seem to have devised have a large and complex matrix of use cases that not only give the user flexibility but also give Apple good margins
I had to chuckle when I saw the design. So over a decade goes by and Apple finally accepting that a proper modular design is was pro’s need and come up with a computer that looks so much like the couple of machines sitting in my basement from yesteryear.
Giant version of this stand could be a great memorial to people's stupidity.
I am Yet to decide for buying a 999$ apple stand or 999$ custom pc... can someone help me please?
KN 2 A stand can hold up your monitor stylishly, can a PC do that?
KN 2 a stand definitely you should buy a stand
@@CCTV_1984 With free cleaning cloth! lol
Thanks for adding a little perspective to the sticker shock. Great video Quinn!
Choose wisely, 2019 Base model Chevrolet Spark 9900
2019 Apple Mac Pro, 13000
But who wants a Chevy?
VidereMemoria GM fanboys
It's legit a fucking cheese grater
The best thing about the screen is that you can not only use its 1600nits to light up your dark room, you can even use the backside of it to make mac'n cheese!
So now that you're basically running the Apple design I think it's time to bring back the beard.
Snazzy, you should build hack with AMD Threadripper 3 with two radeon VII and compare it to base mac pro )
that would be great; destroying apple (once more) and this time even before the new "mac pro" even ships
The GPU Vega II Duo is the impressive thing, cuz AMD wont sell it to the public.
Juan Fonseca does it support thunderbolt?
Finally they did it! The computer I need!! But can’t afford... 🤣
jesus christ im addicted to your channel!
Thanks!!
I still have a G5 Mac Pro running in my office with all original parts. If this one is of the same quality, I’ll be happy.
