At 19:30 the connector looks to me like a standard Molex Micro-Fit connector. Same family of connectors they've been using on their motherboards since at least the 2006 Mac Pro's GPU power slots. BTW, the VESA power connector for the "standard" PCIe cards is very proprietary, and an incompatible clone of Molex Mini-Fit connectors (which are used by ATX motherboard power, among other things such as older Macs). The main difference between Mini-Fit and Micro-Fit is that the latter is (obviously) smaller, yet carries as much power per pin, and that the keying is unique in a way that makes it impossible to insert a different pin-count connector into a other pin-count receptacle, in addition to ensuring the orientation like the Mini-Fit does as well.

4:21 Not even a suspicion, Apple sells SATA-PCIe sleds that go in the MPX slot for expandable storange
Seshpenguin SATA only for now. No PCIe. Yet. But they support any U.2 drive which is cool. Video on Friday about this.
@@snazzy Ah, my bad. I assumed since they slotted into the MPX bays they would use PCIe.
I don't see why regular old PCIe SSD wouldn't work... excited to see that video!
Pretty sure you can just plug any PCIe SSD in there, maybe even some M.2 to PCIe adapters.
@Pomerleau Cédric, that’s not what the snazzy lab guy said. He said you have to go through an Apple authorized service to have them upgraded or replaced.
@@kalijasin You should be able to put pcie SSDs in the the main pcie slots. Just not the fancy apple SSD slots.
when watching this I got the feeling that Quinn is disassembling a piece of alien technology where the device does the same function as a device from earth but it's weirdly designed and made and he's just exploring it 😂😂😂
0:16
You could’ve easily gone the NSFW route.
Trust me, we won’t mind
Edit: After finishing the video and as a huge engineering nerd, kudos to Apple. And also kudos to you for such an intensive breakdown.
And RIP to your warranty. Just be super extra careful when putting back the Xeon, we don’t want bent pins and a chunky blingy paperweight.
Bend the pins back
He looks and sounds like Doug De Muro but for computers
TOTALLY! And love him as well!
I am glad this guy doesn't say THIS at the beginning of every video. I stopped watching Doug because he always says THIS.
Snazzy Labs, you did a stupendous job on this entire Mac Pro upload. I've learned so much more than expected. You've earned a sub from this amateur tech repairman👍🏾.
Really really well done presentation. Masterful even. Kudos. Makes me want one even more, but like most of us, I can't afford it. Also, unreserved kudos to Apple for a change!
Holy hell that PCIe latch sound thing is extremely satisfying omg
Snazzy Labs corrected the “teardown” that iFixit deprived us of.
Feel free to make your own Tear Down, and pay for your own (overpriced) tower.
6:25 The 2009-2012 Mac Pros had a similar mechanism to secure the PCI-E cards
I'm not a Mac-Guy but D*mn man I'm drooling over the engineering of this thing. Your tear down forced me to subscribe.
Damn, gotta give to Apple, this thing is freaking well engineered.
I mean for the price, it should be.
John Dequavis look at other workstations for the same price: they aren’t
@@user-jt6xh2ln9z Yeah we got a quote from Dell for a 78,000 USD workstation that doesn't beat this thing.
@@BrawndoQC for OEM manufactures honestly law of diminishing returns. If you want a super high end computer with actual good value, you've gotta build it yourself.
̄ ̄ But the thing is you can’t get a Mac machine by building it yourself. It’s either using hakingtosh with high uncertainties and complications or just Windows. Some people do need macOS.
balls of steel, well aluminum maybe. great stuff, loved this one.
so where are benchmarks of AMD Hack Mac vs This one!
Honestly the best video I've seen on the Mac Pro thus far...get snazzy!
Always generally liked your videos, but this one, hands down is the reason I subscribed.
Mine arrives tomorrow - Can't wait to get upclose and pull it apart myself.
Let us know how good that internal speaker sounds. If you remember, the original classic Mac Pro had a speaker in it also... which sounded like a mouse with a respiratory infection.
Buy me one please

Yeah, there is something really weird in the encoding.

You see his jacket and the background look pretty the same so the encoder decided the jacket is not highest priority and won't be updated in real time.

Great video, been waiting for something like this from the other big tech youtubers, but you delivered. Well done
A similar "master release" had already been in use with the old, silver Mac Pro lineup. If you pulled the fan back the PCIe cards are unlocked.

But they decided to put them on the back. That's ok for connecting speakers, but awful when you want to use headphones as the back of a tower PC is usually facing away from you. Now you need a cable that's a meter longer and have to climb back there anytime you want to plug one in. Why not just add a second one on top?
This was interesting comparing to all the unboxing crap. Thanks man!

I hear you can get the boot chime back for $499.99.
Internal speakers may help with accessibility? Voice readers, programs chiming/beeping when commands are completed.
Mac Pro is probably one of their rare products that is literally worth the price in engineering + performance.
Yeah it's easy to see why it's expensive, to some degree. None of this stuff is mass-produced to anything like the scale PC stuff is. If I was rich, I'd have one of these, and a gaming PC as well just for kicks.
This video took a dump on ifixit
IDK why people praise iFixit in general. They got famous and they barely put any effort in their videos now. Very robotic and technical.
@@MegaAbzzzzz You do realize they're famous for their device teardown and analysis, repair guide, and repair tool kits and parts they sell not teardown video alone. Here's your answer.
@@MegaAbzzzzz iFixit never really put any effort in their videos because they are not primarily a RUclips channel - all the good stuff is on their website.

Honestly, this is clean
Awesome. Just a note: the pci-e latch came from the older Mac Pro (tower). When you pull the latch to remove the side panel it unlock all pci-e.
That was fun to watch! Extremely interesting and thorough! Thanks!
Apple: *makes $1000 monitor stand*
