Cinderella's voice actress, Ilene Woods, also has a tragic story. She was living it up until old age when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and she completely forgot that she voiced Cinderella. However she still found "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" so soothing despite not recognizing that it was her voice, so the nurses at her nursing home in Canoga Park, played it as often as possible for her because they knew she liked it so much. Until she passed away on July 1st 2010, at age 81.
(Edit): Also, Woods didn't even really audition for Cinderella. As it turns out she was a good friend of Mack David and Jerry Livingston, the song writers of Cinderella, and they asked her to record the songs as a demo reel for Walt. However when Walt heard her singing he absolutely fell in love with her voice, and said "I want her to be voice of Cinderella." She was given the part and her life was changed forever. So really she got the part by accident.

I kinda understand them not allowing her to talk/act in other stuff, that is a value that Disney holds keeping the magic alive in the same way magicians have the magicians code. But you would think that she would be paid extra at least to prevent temptation.

I just had a major realization. Disney finally started crediting voice actors in 1943. This date is of significance because, just a year before, James C. Petrillo, the head of the music union (who controlled the recording licenses of bands) called a strike, where no one in a band could record music. Because of this, 1942 was the year vocalists finally got the recognition they deserved, since they weren’t a part of the the music union, so they could record songs without legal trouble. By the time the strike ended 2 years later, the public’s perception of vocalists had changed; instead of concerts being “X band featuring Y singer”, it became, for example, “Frank Sinatra featuring x band”. I know singers and voice actors aren’t one in the same, but this shift in public perception of a vocalist’s importance in a piece of work directly led to Walt crediting the voice actors in his film. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

While we're talking about tragic voice actors, we need to talk about Marni Nixon. She was an incredible singer who did voice overs for actresses in movie musicals in the 50s and 60s; most notably, she dubbed over Natalie Wood as Maria in West Side Story, Deborah Kerr as Anna in The King and I, and Audrey Hepburn as Eliza in My Fair Lady. She herself played one of the nuns in The Sound of Music (Julie Andrews was basically the only actress back then that Marni didn't have to dub over). Despite all of this incredible work, for most of her career, no one knew who she was. There were times when she would ask the producers for credit, and they refused; for most of her career, her beautiful singing voice was not known to be hers (she was grossly underpaid and her name was usually left out of the credits). She even dubbed over the singing voice of child actor Margaret O'Brien in Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (1949). Four years later, she sang the high notes Marilyn Monroe couldn’t quite reach in ‘Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend’ in the 1953 movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. They would even force her to sign contracts that she would not reveal her part in productions, lest she be barred from work. Luckily, thanks to Deborah Kerr, she was recognized to an extent, but she should have been a household name, like the women she sang for. It's up to us to keep her name alive (she passed away in 2016 at the age of 86).

I was horrified the first time I heard about her. I grew up on many of those musicals and loved them dearly. I'd try to sing like her for hours, having no idea it's her. I thought it was the actresses I saw on screen. I couldn't believe that she had such an impact on my life and got no credit for it... She truly deserves better.

Yikes! As the die-hard Sound of Music fan I am, I knew that she dubbed just about everyone who couldn't sing back then, but not how much, nor that she was barely credited for most of it (since she's in the credits for Sound of Music.) If I remember correctly, they called her 'The Phantom Dubber', and boy, if this is what happened, then it's a tragically appropriate title.
I never thought I'd see a comment about Marni Nixon on an SCB video.

Surprised that walt didn't get it correct. A cartoon is drawing, usually the pre painting drawing; see DaVinci, Michelangelo, etc. What walt was making was animated cartoons.
PS if one really wants to get hoity toity about things animation was always a plural. Animators did put an s on the end. That came about with the computer programs allowing any old non artist to try to make art, and it stuck. But you know purists will still claim that real animators do not put an s on the end of animation.

Mentioning the Mouse brings up an interesting point: In regular cartoons in those days, the voice actors often weren't a big deal anyway. In the early days of animations, they'd get anyone they could find to do a funny voice. Sometimes it would be one of the people who was already involved in the production, so you didn't necessarily have to pay them any additional money. Established characters would have regular voice actors with recognizable character voices, but they never really thought of it as all that important, perhaps because cartoons were already well-known before there were "talkies" at all.

Its actually a harder question then you would think. Because after Snow White WW2 started and essentially Disney was forced to move back to shorter animations or create longer movies consisting of a range of various shorts and musical segments like Melody Time or Fun And Fancy Free. These are a little harder to tell who was working in the film as often they where drafted halfway into the project and those few employees that were left simply pieced together the usable parts into semi coherent narratives. Then came Cinderella in 1950 who was not only the next princess story but also the first full length animated film to consist of a single story since Snow White. Of which, the voice actor of Cinderella, Ilene Woods, was listed in the opening credits. (Though it did not specify her role as Cinderalla, it did state her name first.) So what changed? There was actually a Union Muscians strike a few years after Snow White in 1942-44 where the the Union forced a recording ban on any material where the vocalist and musicians where not given royalties to and credited. Long story short, the record companies were eventually forced to give in. Shortly after (for some reason) many of these vocalists and musicians who were part of this strike, such as the likes of Glen Miller, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra rose in fame into becoming household names. The results of which reached Disney's stage when, at the time where Disney Films were more musical-based, Bing Crosby plays the role of narrator and singer in "Icabod and Mr Toad" in 1949 in which he is credited.

      Belle - Ravenclaw
      Mulan - Gryffindor
      Rapunzel - Slytherin
      Moana - Gryffindor
      Elsa - Slytherin
      Anna - Hufflepuff
      Tiana - Slytherin
      Pocahontas - Hufflepuff
Ariel - IDFK I feel like she’d be a hat stall.
      Jasmine - Ravenclaw or Slytherin
Merida - Gryffindor (I mean her movie is called Brave so like.)
The ladies that DESERVE princesship and haven’t gotten it:
      Jane - Ravenclaw, obviously. (IYKYK)
Meg - Bad*ss Hufflepuff, or Gryffindor
Then Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora have no personalities therefore no house. I love them, but there isn’t much to work with. I’d probably clump them into Hufflepuff because all of them are supposed to be really caring and stuff. But like being ladies is basically their only personality trait.

      @ActiveAdvocate1 4 года назад +26

Your House is supposed to be about the trait in which you have the most faith, so Ariel is a Gryffindor, definitely, because look at how brave she had to be to take that leap. Snow White I'm claiming for my proud Hufflepuff because she's loyal to a fault with the dwarves and isn't afraid of working hard to earn her keep, and same for Cinderella, who, by the way, never even aspired to be a princess. That was dumb luck, because she didn't even know who she was dancing with. Aurora...nope. Hatstall, definitely. She has NO personality. At least Snow White and Cinderella TALK in their stories. Aurora, not so much. She just sings and looks pretty. Again, though, doesn't aspire to be a princess, so it can't be Slytherin, but she doesn't have enough of brain for it to be Ravenclaw or enough of a spine for it to be Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. Hufflepuffs are, in my opinion, just as brave as Gryffindors, but for different reasons. Gryfgfindors fight to attack (usually). Hufflepuffs fight to defend (usually).

From reading about his life, I get the impression that he took the integrity of the art quite seriously, and applied that to how he approached it as a business. Unfortunately, that led to things like that which are quite clearly ethically dubious at best. If you're going to demand exclusivity from your talent, you need to offer them equity. He had many admirable traits, and sometimes treated his employees quite well, but overall his attitudes toward labor were not very positive and he could hold a grudge if he felt betrayed by those who worked for him. He is a fascinating, nuanced figure to study.

Voice or radio actors where huge in the 30's-60's but they were paid peanuts compared to screen actors. Their pay was by the number of words or lines. Some times weekly. Radio plays were huge but the voice actors were paid $20-100 an episode or per line, if they had a big part more if they were a movie star on loan from the production company. Bing Crosby was paid a staggering $8000 a week for his show. While Lucille Ball started at $500 a week and fought for more ending with a pay around $9500 a week by the end of her show my favorite husband. As a fan of classic radio shows you can Google radio spirits and lean a ton about it. They go in depth about a number of the hardships radio actors dealt with during that time. Many actors who got their start in radio plays were left uncredited in the shows women and children especially. Actors who had distinct voices were blocked often by the parent company preventing them from working for anyone else. Production studios felt they owned everything of an actor from voice to likeness. Even taking early cartoon companies to court over characters that resembled famous actors. Walt was no exception to this. He was dead set on owning his voice actors voices.

Auli'i Cravalho could play Moana in live-action.
Actually: what if Disney makes a live-action Moana SEQUEL, instead of the eventual remake. Besides, this time Tamatoa can return as the main villain.
It would be good for Disney, good for those who hate the Disney remakes (as it would be a sequel), and good for those who like the remakes.
Besides, if there is something to criticize about Moana, it would be the existence of a cliché twist villain and the lack of screentime for Tamatoa. Both problems solved by this sequel.
BTW, brothers, have you heard of the underrated Disney show "Legend of the Three Caballeros"? The best Donald Duck show of recent times.

Disney's a FAR more disgusting company than people realize. Since the 1950s, they've changed stories and then deceptively promoted them under the original name. Furthermore, they've been accused of stealing AT LEAST 2-3 stories from others, Lion King and Jungle Cruise among them (the latter is a pretty blatant ripoff of The African Queen, a movie made by United Artists in 1951). Some even dispute the origins of Mickey Mouse. Even more appalling, they've admitted to laying off US citizens in previous years and having foreign visa workers take over (not sure if they're doing it now or not). Walt Disney Studios: Mistreating employees, ruining stories and stealing ideas since 1927.

    Princess in hogwarts houses:
    Moana: Slytherin
    Anna: Hufflepuff
Elsa: slytherin but if she was keen on being ravenclaw it would fit
    Rapunzel: Ravenclaw
    Vanellope: Gryffindor
    Tiana: hufflepuff
Mulan: Hufflepuff or Gryffindor, it would come down to her choice.
    Jasmine: Slytherin
Belle: I would say ravenclaw but she values hufflepuff things a little more.
Auora: Hufflepuff (zero personality I have nothing to work with)
    Snow White: Hufflepuff
    Anything wrong?
