Arshile Gorky: Beyond The Limit

- During conservation of Arshile Gorky’s 1947 painting ‘The Limit,’ another work by Gorky was discovered beneath it on the same original stretcher. Bearing a clear relationship to the series of drawings the artist produced in the summer of 1946 on a property owned by his wife, Mougouch’s, family in rural Virginia, the new work, ‘Untitled (Virginia Summer)’ (ca. 1946-47), provides fresh insight into the nuances of Gorky’s mature style.
On the occasion of a special exhibition at our New York gallery of these two works side-by-side, along with six other drawings Gorky produced during that summer in Virginia, Cosima Spender and Valerio Bonelli have produced a film chronicling this discovery and the context in which Gorky produced these works.

This is such a magnificant skill, like magic.
I believe that the painting discovered underneath was quite rudimentary and unfinished, and that a new canvas was stretched over it not so much for lack of funds to buy a new stretcher, but perhaps because a rush of new ideas overcame his desire to continue on a large painting that was problematic and really not going so well.
In any case, Arshile Gorky is my artistic hero, and without question is the best artist who ever worked on American soil. Although his friend Bill deKooning runs a near second. Despite his current level of fame, and the impressive value of his works, I believe that Gorky still remains largely underappreciated. Gorky's entire life story is so engaging, and his prodigious output of extremely beautiful works of untamed originality is just astounding.

I agree. 'The Limit' is certainly a more realized work, and more balanced - almost classical - composition as well. I suspect AG didn't know quite where to go with the one underneath. It certainly needed revision, but he was somewhat uncomfortable improvising on canvas. The freewheeling was to be taken care on paper beforehand, like it would have with a classical master like say, Rubens. So H&W is revealing something that Gorky probably didn't want us to see, or was at the very least, indifferent to. But now there's another commodity to sell.

I'm left with questions about the 'discovered' painting (Virginia Summer). Was Gorky unhappy with it? Was it considered unfinished? I'd like to have been told a bit more by the conservators and Gorky experts, having recently become a Gorky fan!

Why did he do that? I never thought one can kind of glue an oil painting on a canvas. I can't understand why. At the same time paint with oil on paper. What kind of paper did he used?
Actually it is a very common practice to glue a drawing onto canvas, either as a finished product to display or as an underpinning for further work.
It’s to prop up the paper & have the hard surface work surface to work on. As they said, he was often short on materials.

with all respect, is it not a sacrilege in the name of information (or what other value) to expose something that the artist had deliberately covered? Does this act subtract the human nature of his artistic vision and places it in a museum state thus fossilizes it in the form of a spectacle?
Why did they bring her? She cheated on him and left him after his accident, took his children away from him. He committed suicide because of her.

Its so dumb when ppl get excited about paintings "underneath" other paintings. Obviously the artist didn't want the world to see that painting because the artist thought it sucked. Duh.
It might have been due more to financial concerns… but yes he certainly wouldn’t have covered it up if he didn’t love it… I’m not even sure it’s a finished painting, almost looks like he gave up on it

I particularly don't like his paintings, to me they look like a child's work.
I would respectfully suggest that if you spend some thousands of hours in museums and studying the history of painting going back to 13th century Duccio and even further back to the art of ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians (etc!) you will reach a better appreciation for Gorky. I have spent over fifty years studying art history intently (and also creating art, with works now in museums and important collections), and my conclusion now is that the two very best artists from this last century are: Picasso and Arshile Gorky. I am also quite fond of Mondrian from this period. Art recognition does not come from being told who to admire, but comes from a lifetime of study, immersion, and understanding.
Incidentally, please take a look at one of Gorky's artistic heroes from his own country Armenia. This is Toros Roslin who produced fantastic illuminated manuscript paintings way back in the 13th century. Such exciting and astounding works by this artist that so few know about!
