- In today's episode of Video Game Lore, we'll be taking a look at the Crabsquid - I'll be telling you all the information we know about this horrifying monstrosity as well as any other interesting points of trivia and information I'm able to dig up!

One of the most terrifying Crabsquid encounters is when you explore the Degasi base and it EMP's your flashlight, followed by said Crabsquid staring at you through the window.

When i got to the degasi base the second i find it a crabsquid spawns in front of me i was going to fast so they didnt have time to load in lmao But i killed 4 of them lmao
Then it destroyed my seamoth, and I had to swim to the surface

EDit: he does allow seamoths if you turn off the lights my bad but you clearly still broke the rules next time you should right click to turn off the lights

For a few months in the early access, the crabsquid was much more dangerous than in the full version. They were rarely alone, and if you found 2 or more in a pack, they could permastun your Cyclops, and eventually destroy it without you having any chance of saving it. The Grand Reef was much much more dangerous back then, even without the ghost leviathan juvenile.
Damn, I don't remember much from the early access days but that sure sounds horrifying :) ....considering that, I guess they aren't so bad now after all...
yeah they nerfed the hell out of them, I'm glad they did because it was ridicoulus :D
There is a Ghost leviathan in the Grand reef?? I thought they only spawn in the lost river

I believe there is two in the grand reef and they are adult. I have only found one of them and they tend to be in the more open areas right next to the crater edge (But not in it)
There is one smaller one (juvenile) located in the blood kelp zone, implying that ghost leviathans spend there younger years in the lost river ( since the cove tree is full of their eggs) they exit to spend teen years in the blood kelp and then migrate to the grand reef for the final stages of their life. Then, possibly when they are elderly they swim into the crater edge and feed on microscopic organisms ( as the PDA states) I had a lot of trouble with the one in the blood kelp, he stopped me from getting into the lost river many times...

Imagine you are in 500+ on the ocean looking for resource and suddenly you hear this eerie voice from the distance, out of curiosity you approach it, then you see 4 eyes looking at you, its the crabsquid coming towards you while screaming.
Man thats scary..
That would be horrifying :) - especially if the rest of the body wasn't bioluminiscent so you could only see they eyes until you shine your flashlight on it...

I pressed alt + f4 when i saw a crabsquid for the first time.
The first time it bumped into my seamoth - I just turned around all annoyed and stuff only to see this monstrosity.....let's just say I promptly left the area :)
when i saw one of them, i just noped out of there until i wanted to explore more. they killed me with the combination of the warpers in the deep grand reef and i was actually freaking out since i never died so far away from my base
I accidentally dropped the flare I was holding out of fright and the crabsquid swam towards it and started sending out EMPs.

When I saw crabsquids at first it confused me as to how they could actually harm people.. but then due to subnautica weird pov I realized just how big they actually are. Now it's not so far fetched

I actually love the crab squids, they just sound so cool. The creature that really freaks me out is the warper. Everytime I hear one, I think “it sounds so cool!” And “ABORT! ABORT! ABORT! ABORT!”

I wish when it fights a warper and just its emp it would disable the warper as a bit as a hint that warpers are not biological in nature.

Ok, so here's my story: First time when I was in Grand Reef was when I accualy got Cyclops, build a base and saw Sunbeam blowing up. I knew that something was under the island, but I wanted to be stronger at the first place. So here I am... Getting down in my Cyclops I have decided to active my sonar. Aaaaand well... let's say that I went to the *WRONG* side of the biome... So after escaping from three Ghost Leviathans in the void, in panic I went deeper in the Grand Reef... and I saw this thing... First I was confused. Than it had attacked me. My power was off and like two more of them were coming in my way. I have decided to be a man and get into my PRAWN suit to destroy them and It worked. I came back to Cyclops and I though what was worse. Crab Squids or Ghost Leviathan? I agreed with myself that I didn't want to damage my ship more so I sailed deeper into Grand Reef and long story short I ended next to the drowned preacoursors facility. After I got some answears and informations I wanted to go back home. But where was the way? I was swimming in the Lost Reef for a few hours getting photo with Ghost Leviathan Eggs Tree and getting my second Cuddlefish egg. And finnaly after being annoyed of not finding the exit I have decided to go to the hole where there were orange-red light.
And that's how I meet Sea Emperor! :D

I was exploring the Mushroom Forest when I encountered my first one, scared the shit out of me since they don’t usually spawn there.
Yeah that is quite a rare encounter :)
there are 2 main reasons to disconsider them developing their EMP to defend against either the precursor or the warpers.
the first, and most important one is that, it takes thousands of years of constant competition to the point of a creature with the gene not only find a mate, but also become the main "version" of its species.
second, neither the warper nor the precursors went against them to the point of predatory. hell, the warpers would only attack the ones with the sickness, BUT at the same time, if they were sick they wouldnt be able to reproduce...
True :) it is most likely that they developed the EMP as a response to the ampeel - probably because it presents competition.
The main reasons were to hunt Jellyrays more easily, since they use bio-electricity, and to defend against Ampeels.
Can you do a video on Craig McGill? He keeps popping up in the pda voice logs and in the captain's log.

Well, to be fair - if you're out there - swimming without any sort of vehicle or protection, lots of things become significantly more dangerous :)

I raised a Crabsquid to protect me from Warpers, and I can even pick it up after releasing it outside containment. It’s my own deployable bodyguard.

Also, The Crabsquid may appear larger in the trailer due to the perspective shift in the game, the actual scale of the UI is much larger than that of human perception, making things seem smaller.

This thing really nailed that initial panic factor. It looks like something out Lovecraft's worst nightmares and it's the only thing in the planet that straight up disables your equipment, making you completely helpless at first glance. And of course they also have to live in area with high frequency of Warpers, only enemy that can pull you out of your vehicle. Combination 2-3 of these stunlocking my seamoth while 2 warpers kept teleporting me out of it really threw me off guard first few times and even after that it still remains my most probable cause for death.
Tip for everyone who wants to build base near the green river's starting point like I did: build it as close to seafloor as possible. Crabsquids can only use their EMP horizontally and that they're always way above you. It's no wonder why your predecessors fell for them when they chose one of the higher points of the cave for their base.
That is a good tip for base building :) and yeah, I totally agree - love the design side of these things!

Crabsquids have always been a mystery to me, especially the EMP blast they emit, and to add on to what you said about how it got the EMP blast, I like to think that when the person that build their base next to it, the Crabsquid started eating away at the power supply, and I guess it ate enough to discharge it. Or it’s just a thing it learned for the sole purpose of pissing everyone off

I lost all fear of these when I found a combination of two things 1. I hatched one and got a better look at it. 2. The propulsion cannon can still yeet it
Oh yeah, the propulsion cannon is really good against these :)
Also the cyclops with the shield active can kill these things in 2-3 hits

I find it highly amusing to hatch a bunch of these in alien containment. They are so small in there and if you get a maxed out tank they look like a super market crustacean tank. Then you take one out and release it and it's the size of the freaking multi purpose room.

I can definitely see why you'd think that :) but unfortunately (as far as we know) no....they evolved all by themselves.
The Last Bacon mainly to defend themselves from the Bio-Electrical attacks of the Ampeel, which resides in the big Blood Kelp Zone, alongside Crabsquids.
My first time I meat one was in the deep grand reef, they attacked my cyclops, then I realized they did like no damage and then I rammed through them, dealing truckloads of it. However, the crabsquids wern't very happy as when I left the cyclops to visit the degasi base one was waiting right behind the hatch- and when i desembarked it slashed at me , screamed and launched an EMP, scaring me super hard. Probably my worse jumpscare in game!
Yeah I also got jumpscared by their EMP blasts first time around :)

I've recently started playing subnautica and my friend has been giving me tips. Recently he told me to stay as far as possible from these things (mainly because I'm terrible so basically anything can kill me)
Guess I'm carrying flares or decoys on my cyclops from now on.
Here’s a very helpful tip: the Ampeel is immune to the Seamoth Perimeter Defense System. And the Sea Dragon Leviathans and the Lava Lizards are immune to the Thermoblade and lava. And everything in the Lost River is immune to the acidic green brine. And Bonesharks are attracted to light sources and will try to attack the source, which makes flares the best thing to use against them, as if you throw a flare they should stop chasing you and go after the flare as long as you don’t have any lights on, and if they are near your base, set up some floodlights or light sticks BUT NOT spotlights.

For some reason I encountered one of these in the kelp forest. It attacked me after I got hypnotized by a Mesmer.
That is a weird place to encounter one.....perhaps it just got lost :)

Because practically every bit of information presented in the video not taken directly from in game is stupid, so I will just present my favorite of these:
Game: Clearly states that crabsquid hunt small fast moving prey with its eyesight. Has a model with 4 eyes with a large field of vision and depth perception, clearly indicating that it uses its eyes for many things.
Fans: It MaKeS ClIcKiNg NoIsEs So It ClEaRlY EcHoLoCaTeS aNd HaS BaD EyEsIgHt.
And you're just at the tip of the iceberg - there is a ton of information out there which contradicts each other with really no way of verifying what is true :) and regarding the eyesight of a crabsquid - they can easily have both, solid eyesight and echolocation as a lot of the areas they move around in would be too dark for them to only use vision to navigate.
@@TheLastBacon It doesn't seem to be to hard. It was really easy to find out a lot about it, from the data pads and the creatures this is based off.
It has the anatomy of an octopus, except with the 10 limbs of a crab rather than the 8 of an octopus. It has a weak (at least compared to electric eels) electric burst probably from the same source (electrolytes). It communicates the same way hermit crabs do (based on the noise and that octopi do not make noises really).
As for echolocation, as mentioned before the sounds made by crabsquids are probably made the same way as hermit crabs, by rubbing their legs together (since that have no shell), they would then need to pick up the echo. Aquatic invertabrates do this through statocysts. The statocyst of a crabsquid would need to be in the bulbous part of the creature (the segment that contains the stomach) much like an octopus. Octopuses already have notoriously bad hearing but in crabsquids this is compounded by the surrounding tissues (the jellyfish/ floater type sack around the bulbous part) further insulating the statocyst making it even harder to hear.
Further the enviroments that contain the crabsquids are not significantly different to those that real octopuses do in the twilight zone, (that being said the twilight zone in subnautica has more light than the earths as kelp are able to grow in it).
TL;DR
The animals that inspired the Crabsquid don't have echolocation, Crabsquids appear to not have the hearing required for echolocation, and Crabsquids don't live in an enviroment where they would need echolocation (according to octopuses living at the same/deeper depths)

I hate his creature, I really think it's the worst in the game. I always used the (500m) Degasi Habitat to get to the lost river, and I always got flashed like 3 times on the way..

What if the Crabsquids brain is consting of plenty smaller glowing brainlets in the Gelatinous Outer Membrane while the General Data Storage or Memory is situated somehwere deeper inside the Crabsquid?
This could mean that the Glowy Bits (Its plenty Brainlets) could effectively focus itself onto one specific tast and sending out a Strong Electromagetic Wave to then Agitate the Local Baterial Organisims (Proberbly a certain kind, likely in some way Related to the Crabsquid in a Symbiotic way) to cause a Bio-Electric-Illumia reaction ... overloading electronics & Stunning weaker lifeforms nearby.
The Micororganisims could be related to the Blue or Green Sludge in the Lost River too, though i belive its the Green Sludge, less of an acid than a heavy Carnivorus Cell Colony. Living in Symbiosis with certain Creatures like the Crabsquid. The Crabsquid Stunns & Kills the Prey while the Bacteria (Possibly even stored inside the Intestinal Part of the Crabsquid) then Digests it. The Bacteria gets its Nutrients and the Crabsquid does so too. And due to the Stunning effect of the EMP they can take on prey much lager (And Nutitious) than them.
But thats just a Hypotheisis, a badly written too.
That's definitely an interesting hypothesis :) I suppose it's possible and it would explain why the extra space in the creature's body can be used for the stomach.

There is one thing about trying to kill them that's scary, that since they have a 0 degree turn radius, it's risky even to go up behind it and start stabbing as i've seen them just swivel around alarmingly fast and attack

The freakiest aspect of these things is their eyes, I swear... they always seem to be staring at *you*, not just the player. Then there's the 10 arms with knife-like points, and the giant stomach... Yeah, only creatures in the game that genuinely disturb me. I avoid them like the plague, even more so than reapers.

I actually don't think that a crabsquid killed Bart Torgal, I don't think they would have put him in a scene with a seamoth encountering a reaper right afterwards. At the end there's this clip of him coughing and disappearing, which I think very much hints at him dying from the bacterium. It's pretty safe to assume Bart was capable of handling crabsquids as his group literally build a base at one of their breeding grounds, which also makes me think that the encounter shown in the trailer wasn't really of much significance, or perhaps it was one his first time seeing a crabsquid.
It's definitely possible that Bart simply died from the bacterium :) at least the trailer definitely seems to be leaning in that direction.
When I was playing in creative I spawned one in near my base as a pet and it didn’t do it big emp blast but when I was about to launch my rocket, i saw a glimpse of it just literally flying toward the deep grand reef and it didn’t even say goodbye :(

They're aggressive, do high damage, shut down vehicles, and are immune to perimeter defense but yeah not that dangerous XD. That being said a couple of gas torps will kill one outright and the repulsion cannon can prevent one from attacking. But that requires that I either bring equipment which I usually don't use or devote most of my attention to it while in it's vicinity, which makes them more troublesome than most other creatures. I'd definitely rather deal with packs of bonesharks than with a single crabsquid.
That's very fair :) I suppose as far as being a threat goes, they're not quite in the reaper leviathan territory, but still quite bothersome.
Why not grab a bone shark and yeet it at a crabsquid?

I was far from my seamoth when I first encountered a Crabsquid.
I lost my way, was running out of Oxygen and then this thing sneaked up from behind, got between me and my Seamoth.
It was survival mode.
As I saw the EMP blast I figured I should disable my flashlight, raced to my seamoth, placed a floating marker thingy and raced off in panic.

When i was in the Lost river cache i was terrified of these things but now I just zoom past them when i'm in the Grand Reef

Okay, this is weird so I figured it might add some depth. I was hunting for minerals in one of the Blood Kelp/Reef zones in my PRAWN suit and a Warper showed up, many times. I ignored him for the most part until he teleported a Crabsquid a few feet away. I thought it was trying to use the Crabsquid's natural EMP ability to disable the suit, but I guess the two of them just wanted to duke it out.
That must've been some incredible tactical planing from the warper if the squid was intentional :)

It's also possible the large stomach means it doesn't eat often. If it eats large prey and slowly digests and collect nutrients from it over a long period it could maybe sustain itself for a while without needing to eat.
