The most underrated album of the last 30 years - I'm not joking. Edit: This came out at what was likely the height of the loudness wars. The final mix guy was stunned that Axl wanted the version with no brick walling. This came out the same year as the brick walled Death Magnetic came out.
Hearing Slash play this live was one of the best experiences of my life. They killed this song in Florida in 2023 at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino. I'd seen them 4 times hoping to hear this live and they finally played it.
I’m a huge GNR fan and I put this in my top 5 songs. That’s including all the appetite abs illusion. Songs. Axl is a song writing genius. Doesn’t get the credit he deserves
I completely agree with you, man! This song is a masterpiece! There was a time is one of the best songs I've ever heard! Your reactions are fantastic as well! Prostitute would be a perfect one for your next reaction, we're loving it!
@@bardonmusic Oh for sure. The ones that stand out the most in that tho are Catcher in the Rye, Street of Dreams, There Was a Time, and Prostitute, which you rly gotta turn up as high as you can comfortably stand to feel on every level. But not too high in the beginning cuz it starts out rly quiet.
It's a beautiful album all around, from the amount of both work and talented people Axl got involved to Axl producing and even working on the final mastering is a statement of a true artist, not just a singer.
Just saw it and "covered" on Twitch, man, I didn't gave you much credit by your kinda of deboche (idk if the word it's correct) face on the thumb, but it's one of my favorite musics at all. So I played, and enjoyed so much both the fact that you did actually like the music, all of the work and effort put on it, and also talked about technical aspects of the music construction and musical scenario overall. Congrats.
Broken glass and cigarettes Writing on the wall It was a bargain for the summer And I thought I had it all I was the one who gave you everything The one who took the fall You were the one who would do anything The one who can't recall Where she was while she was sleeping In another woman's bed Or the doctors or the lawyers Or a stranger that she met If there's nothing I can gain from this Or anything at all It'd be the knowledge that you gave me When I thought I've heard it all It was a long time with you It was a long time with me It'd be a long time for anyone But looks like it's meant to be Social class and registers Cocaine in the hall All the way from California On the way to your next call To those non-negotiations To simulate a call For the betterment of evils and your ways around the laws that keep you Up and sitting pretty On a pedestal of men And now you're sleeping like an angel Near the man who you gave head If there's something I can make of this Or anything at all It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all It was a wrong time for you It was a wrong time for me It was the wrong time for everyone But looks like I'm about to see for myself If I could go back in time to the place in my soul, there all alone Lonely tear drops Ooh, are calling you But I don't wanna know it now 'Cause knowing you, it won't change a damn thing But there was a time Yeah, there was a time Didn't wanna know at all Didn't wanna know at all I don't wanna know it now Yeah, there was a time Didn't wanna know at all Didn't wanna know at all I don't wanna know it now Oh I would do anything for you There was a time I would do anything for you I would do anything for you There was a time There was a time Oh, I would do anything for you Oh, I would do anything for you Yeah there was a time Didn't wanna know at all Didn't wanna know at all I don't wanna know it now I would do anything for you (didn't wanna know, at all) (Didn't wanna know, at all, and I don't wanna know it now) There was a time, was a time
There Was a Time is one of Guns N' Roses' finest works ever. In my opinion is the their best track of all time. People are welcome to disagree with me but personally it is my favourite song of all time. Yes that includes Bohemian Rhapsody as well.
The Effect in the guitar solo is a kill switch and is a little button Buckethead here in this case and also Bumblefoot live can use on their guitars. When pushed it stops the signal for a second. Buckethead famously used this effect in his solo song Jordan. Bumblefoot has just a little button on his doubleneck guitar. Buckethead has some kind of big read arcade type button on his guitar.
It has a really interesting development, once it got released for many people it was seen as nothing more thank Axl and a band with nothing related to GnR than him. And the fact that the music is so different in many areas compared to the classic GnR albums made the haters argument even stronger
Talk about loud.... There is a part in Street of dreams that blows my eardrums. After the drop then the "what this means to me...." Actually pisses me off when I'm not ready for it
@@lilwendigo8252 I rewatched the video again, the part right before that was the tapping, and you are right, the part right at that mark is probably the kill switch. Both sound similar though. I have seen people do that BH solo with tapping when those people don't have a kill switch on their guitar.
This song is a miss. There are great tracks but listening to the whole thing.. It's a miss. Btw you aren't reacting to the song. You've already heard it, as you keep saying what is coming up next. You are analyzing it. Breaking it down. That is fine, and an expert offering thier professional opinion especially at no charge is cool. Axl Rose - lead vocals, guitar

Axl guitar? Wtf xddd
You wrong mate
@@skywalker2230 Axl did the Acoustic part
Stinson also sang the background vocals at the end
Axl actually is a really good guitar player
The whole album is the mark of a true genius, severely under-appreciated.
Incredibly good album and this song is awesome. Axl created a masterpiece and so many people have missed out.
i slept on it. i listened to chinese democracy and didn’t like it so i didn’t listen to the rest 😂 don’t judge a book by it’s cover!
I think songs up to there was a time were neat! But after that, the songs just sound noisy and boring. 😢
One of the greatest solos of all the time
Buckethead is just on another level
It is just perfect, the balance between melody and technical proficiency is amazing
one of the most underrated pieces in all rock and metal history
Probably GNR best song ever
Axl Rose is one of the greatest singers ever. This song is just a small showcase of his capabilities. Thanks for your beautiful analysis!
The most underrated album of the last 30 years - I'm not joking.
Edit:

I feel the same, it is such an underrated and extremely maligned album that deservers more praise
The demos are way better too, its too bad these were so overproduced.
This song is right up there with November Rain and Estranged. The guitar solo by Buckethead is out of this world!
I agree with you, it is one of the best GNR songs indeed
Hearing Slash play this live was one of the best experiences of my life. They killed this song in Florida in 2023 at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino. I'd seen them 4 times hoping to hear this live and they finally played it.

I just strted listen too this Album a Year ago. Wow it’s got 5 Amazing Songs 2-3 Masterpieces.
This album is a MASTERPIECE
But one of the ugliest album covers ever 😂
I completely agree with you, man! This song is a masterpiece! There was a time is one of the best songs I've ever heard! Your reactions are fantastic as well!
Prostitute would be a perfect one for your next reaction, we're loving it!
Thanks a lot for your comment, and yeah this track and the whole of the album for that matter is awesome, quite underrated
First guitar solo feed bk at the end its like a knife in yr heart!!
That guitar effect is buckethead using a killswitch on his custom les Paul. Incredible sound !
I asked for this one, FINALLY!!! My favorite one from the album, amazing analysis as always 🙌🏻❤
Thanks again!
Definitely!
Axl has stated this is one of his favorite songs he worked on and also the hardest
it shows, it truly is a great track
Prostitute & Madagascar & Catcher in the rye are other great and cinematic songs from this album
Prostitute is insane. I don’t think Axl has ever sung with as much raw and mature emotion as he does in the final chorus of that one.
this album as a whole has that cinematic aesthetic don0t you think?

Catcher is prolly my least fave on the album but I love the other 2.
Prostitute is such an amazing song, my God!
My favourite song of all time
I’ve listened to it thousands of times over the years !

Mine too, brother.
Mine too 🤘🏻🔥
Buckethead is a genius. And Axl sang like never before on this track.
The best Album in Rock History!!! For me!!! Masterpiece!!!
one of the best ever and very under rated
To advanced for the time ! Top guitars in the track

it is indeed!!!
AMAZING guitar work
The Guitar effect to Buckethead's solo is Kill Switch bro.
By the way, good video, new sub!!🔥
Best song on that album and top 10 overall for sure.
I agree with you 100%
The only song that can match this one for dramatics is Prostitute. Plz do that one next, it’s on another level
Also it would actually be the first ever reaction video to Prostitute on RUclips so… better capitalize on that imo
that's the next one from this album!!!
wasnt aware of it, thanks for the info
Hello, I'm Brazilian and I loved your professional analysis of the song!!!
Thank you so much!!
Buckethead and his killswitch ❤
Is a top 5 GnR song for me !!
Your reaction to Ozzie's Shot in the Dark is what brought me here. Looking forward to future content.
thanks for your support, brave sir robin!!!
Broken glass and cigarettes
Writing on the wall
It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all
I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall
You were the one who would do anything
The one who can't recall
Where she was while she was sleeping
In another woman's bed
Or the doctors or the lawyers
Or a stranger that she met
If there's nothing I can gain from this
Or anything at all
It'd be the knowledge that you gave me
When I thought I've heard it all
It was a long time with you
It was a long time with me
It'd be a long time for anyone
But looks like it's meant to be
Social class and registers
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California
On the way to your next call
To those non-negotiations
To simulate a call
For the betterment of evils and your ways around the laws that keep you
Up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal of men
And now you're sleeping like an angel
Near the man who you gave head
If there's something I can make of this
Or anything at all
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all
It was a wrong time for you
It was a wrong time for me
It was the wrong time for everyone
But looks like I'm about to see for myself
If I could go back in time to the place in my soul, there all alone
Lonely tear drops
Ooh, are calling you
But I don't wanna know it now
'Cause knowing you, it won't change a damn thing
But there was a time
Yeah, there was a time
Didn't wanna know at all
Didn't wanna know at all
I don't wanna know it now
Yeah, there was a time
Didn't wanna know at all
Didn't wanna know at all
I don't wanna know it now
Oh
I would do anything for you
There was a time
I would do anything for you
I would do anything for you
There was a time
There was a time
Oh, I would do anything for you
Oh, I would do anything for you
Yeah there was a time
Didn't wanna know at all
Didn't wanna know at all
I don't wanna know it now
I would do anything for you (didn't wanna know, at all)
(Didn't wanna know, at all, and I don't wanna know it now)
There was a time, was a time
Guns playing power metal better then power metal bands
I am "your dad" and this IS my Guns N Roses. Fan since 87
the guitar effect in the solo is a Killswitch, it is a button that cuts the guitar signal and produces that effect like a tremolo but drier
you are right!!!
@@bardonmusic I am pretty sure Buckethead is tapping there and not using a kill switch or maybe both?

best GNR song ever, period.
In the solo at 16:30 that sound effect is buckethead's kill switch in action.
Man thank you for not just reacting to the most popular songs like most on YT.
I'd love to hear an isolated vocals on this

The demo/rough cut is a million times better than the album version too
Awesome reaction. You should react to “prostitute” and “if the world” from this album !
