RIP Doug Parkinson. Stunning voice, and arguably the finest Aussie afro to go with it. He did a great version back in 1989 of the Guv'ment song from Big River which thrilled the audience and they begged for more. But his quintessential version of Dear Prudence is one of those rare occasions where the cover transcends the Beatles. My friends and I were honoured to see Doug Parkinson perform Dear Prudence live at Sydney Opera House only 18 months ago. What a champion.

@@JaneNewAuthor How fantastic for your son to be raised on music. My kids were too ... I reckon it's a gift. There are some who passionately believe nobody can outperform the Beatles, and in most cases that's true. But as many people have commented here, there are some amazing exceptions, including Joe Cocker's version of Little Help From My Friends, Zoot's version of Eleanor Rigby, and Doug Parkinson's Dear Prudence.

One of my brother's said it was better than the Beatles . It wasn't till all that long ago I came to appreciate Doug's version . One of my other brothers had it in his 45s collection . Rip Doug, one of the best rock voices not only in Australia but the world. I once walk passed him on exhibition street in Melbourne a couple of years ago, what an imposing presence. This track and other in Focus tracks bring back great childhood memories.for me of the late 60s and early 70s. My sympathies to the family.

And this folks is why I love a good cover! I was supposed see him sing this live. He was too sick to perform (and passed away not long after). Doug's version is a masterpiece and an absolutely brilliant reinterpretation of the original.

I was a young kid that had just arrived from Afghanistan back in the late '70s, watching this fellow with a strange Moustache on the TV. That was Doug, bless his heart and soul. Beautifully sung....RIP...I feel so nostalgic for my childhood's Australia and Doug was a part of it.
