In perspective, the Zoot was the quintessential Bubble Gum band in 1969, and when they released this it was a whole new aspect of their versatility that was a shock and a very pleasant surprise to those of us who used to see them at our high school dances like Spectra at Waverley and Ashwood High schools, Rick Springfield's old high school. All top ten bands had to play pubs and dance venues three or four days a week in those times just to make a living, even if they had hits, as the music industry was supported by a very small population in those days. This is a genuinely great rock cover of Eleanor Rigby. I think all the dislikes are from Beatles purists who think they're sacred and untouchable... Even if you prefer the original, which is fine, this cover is still fantastic.
It's the sub title that gives off the bad vibes "better than the Beatles". Personally I think it's a better ROCK version than the Beatles, but it's wrong to compare cover over with an already perfect original.
I think this the best cover of a Beatles song and that Zoot ace it with their own hard rock style . just like Joe Cocker did With Little help from my friends. @@patrickmohan2220 I said (I think this the best cover of a Beatles song) I did say Better then the Beatles song learn the meaning of "words" before you shoot your mouth off.
This is awesomely nostalgic - They were a good band and this was a great version - definitely one of my favourite interpretations ever - And Darryl Cotton RIP, Beeb Bertles, Rick Brewer (great drummer) and Rick Springfield looking rather lonely though lovely and playing great guitar - and I can remember the pink outfits!
This is the version mum would crank in the HQ Kingswood when I was a kid and it's definitely my favourite over The Beatles. Their version is obviously an excellent original but I prefer the heavier one
Tullfan At least of a Beatles song. Although Ray Charles pushes that both with his cover of this, and also Yesterday. Along with Doug Parkinson in Focus’ cover of Dear Prudence which at the bare minimum is as good as the original.
+Lazyknight Many songwriters and bands write music that they'll never perform because of the record labels insistence that every band have their ''sound.'' What happened to the Beatles is the love of money, it's not their fault, they were giving people what they wanted to hear, people wanted to hear ballads.
+Joe Micheau thanks for your opinion i do regret posting that i do think this version is worse yet i still like it now and would galdly listen too it and you are right ☺ about the beatles
+Joe Micheau This is good cover but I wouldn't say it's a better version. For it was, more people would be aware of this version. This is my first time hearing this cover which I dig! And for the money, who isn't in it for the money? I rather see a artist take the money, than sellout their sound like going from straight rock to corporate hair metal.
Those bass and guitar riffs are something else! Is it better than the original? That's a pretty big call...I think they made an amazing, different version of one of the most masterfully written pop songs in history.
The Beatles gave their song the calmer, simpler and quieter tune because its representing her loneliness and unknowing death. You just cant replace that with more rock instrumental than actual lyric either.
A late reply. The 'actual lyric' hasn't been replaced by anything. It's all there just as Paul MacCartney wrote it. John Lennon apparently heard it and said that he loved it by the way.
This version in this clip is nice. But as Lynixinursinks, i see it similar, some kind of music, some kind of songs, are made in the best, highist form. Also like Penny Lane, or A Day In A Life...like some from Elvis, Tom Jones, or Petula Clark... From "Yesterday" are tousends of versions, may some reach the Orginal Level, but on top is this only orginal. May my mind is so, i get the Blue Double LP "The Beatles in early 80's with age around 15, years later as CD, may i had so often the orginal version, that there is no place for other interpretions. When it if so, than it is so. (i like also Donna Lewis..."I Could Be The One, ...I could be your europen dream..." or "Be the one" Dua Lipa, so not only older stuff music lover.
Gotta say, I'm a Beatles freak. But this was the first version I heard of this song, and it blew me away. And it continues to do so. When I heard The Beatles' version after this, I thought, "Meh". This was a serious risk taken by Zoot, and it came up trumps. Seeing Darryl, Russ and Jim do it in concert was amazing,
Yes I remember when this was a hit back in around 1970 or 71 and it was absolutely fabulous. I rate this version one of the best songs I've heard. I'm not interested in comparing it with other groups versions.😀
A great cover - takes it in a different direction. The original is actually much more personal and emotional - you feel the loneliness - while this is more rocked up and gives Rick Springfield an opportunity to show he could really play guitar.
This blew my mind when I first heard them perform it. I think it was the National Battle of the Bands ... very early 70s. I still think it holds up very well!
This is Rick Springfield's arrangement of this famous Beatles track, as performed by Aussie band Zoot, circa 1970. Actually....this is a masterpiece arrangement for all the critics to absorb!! So see it and hear it for what it is! This version cannot be compared to the Beatles original, as it's a huge improvement!! RIP Darryl !!
@@Deejaay83urj38 nope it got heavy with bands like black sabbath and deep purple in the late 60s and early 70s. This song included too. never mentioned the 80s
Ignore the title. Its comparing apples with oranges, but this version is absolutely inspired. Fantastic. But Doug Parkinson's cover of Dear Prudence in 1969 is phenomenal - the best studio recorded Beatles cover ever.
Back in 1969 Zoot performed in the School Hall at Thornbury High School and it has left a lasting memory for those attending. Seen them Master Apprentices, Aztecs and many of the other bands of the time around Melbourne venues.
When you say a cover of a song as legendary as 'Eleanor Rigby' is better than the original, you have some big shoes to fill. This version doesn't quite do that, but it has enough style to hold its own as being among the better (if not more outlandish) covers.
Michael Richardson Check out the Vanilla Fudge version - longer, slower with their trademark organ. Having said that, all three are so totally different and brilliant in their own way. So too is the Ray Charles version. End of the day, I love them all, but this is my favourite.
This is an incredible interpretation of a great song! Really strong dynamics, insightful arrangement, each part manages to surpass the previous, I'm absolutely blown away! Actually better than the original! This is one of the best songs I've ever heard!
This is such a kick arse version of this song! Such a great twist on the original - (which I love by the way) - really clever & Zoot made it their own! 😁
I was 12 years old when I first heard this late at night with my radio playing when I was supposed to be asleep. I thought it was better than the Beatles version then (and I love the Beatles - best group ever, bar none) and 1/2 century later I still think the same way.
Saw them, Doug Parkinson and Wendy Saddington at the Village Green. Those were the days.
Village Green had a rep. as a bucket of blood.
There is an alternate universe for every song.

This actually made me not dislike the video
Check out this timeless classic with a twist cheers ruclips.net/video/wW21kYCqGe4/видео.html
By far the heaviest thing on radio when it came out! Still sounds great.
I always wondered if McCartney ever heard this? As far as I am concerned this is the most interesting interpretation of any Beatles I've ever heard.
They did and John liked it.
@@swinetrek Send me the link for him saying that
@@patrickmohan2220 they didnt have links in those days
@@swinetrek Just as John Lennon loved John Farnham’s version of Help! He stated “This was the way I wanted it to be sung!” Not verbatim ok?🤭
Of course he would of heard this
The only cover of a Beatles song that I ever liked
I'm a BIG Beatles fan....This is awesome!!!
This is the version mum would crank in the HQ Kingswood when I was a kid and it's definitely my favourite over The Beatles. Their version is obviously an excellent original but I prefer the heavier one
Wow! What can you say? This band should have been world famous.
This is probably the best cover song I've ever heard.
Your right. And dear prudence by the underrated doug parkinson
Tullfan At least of a Beatles song. Although Ray Charles pushes that both with his cover of this, and also Yesterday. Along with Doug Parkinson in Focus’ cover of Dear Prudence which at the bare minimum is as good as the original.
@@Deejaay83urj38 Yeeeesss!!!
@@catwzl49 Even John Farnham and Help (especially live with the MSO).
Joe Cocker ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ is also great
IS that RICK SPRINGFIELD on guitar?
yes and Beeb birtles on bass
YES
I respect your opinion good sir however saying quote "better than the beatles" when they wrote and created the song i think is just incorrect
Lazyknight Thank you. There is room at the table for both bands and their versions.
+Joe Micheau Absolute rubbish
+Joe Micheau This is good cover but I wouldn't say it's a better version. For it was, more people would be aware of this version. This is my first time hearing this cover which I dig! And for the money, who isn't in it for the money? I rather see a artist take the money, than sellout their sound like going from straight rock to corporate hair metal.
Those bass and guitar riffs are something else! Is it better than the original? That's a pretty big call...I think they made an amazing, different version of one of the most masterfully written pop songs in history.
Noelle McAlister yes {!!!
Such a unique version. They have really rocked it up. Love this and Beatles versions.❤
Rick Springfield was a handsome guitarist back then.
The Beatles gave their song the calmer, simpler and quieter tune because its representing her loneliness and unknowing death. You just cant replace that with more rock instrumental than actual lyric either.
The land of ac/dc begs to differ
Back then there was no Beatles music on RUclips so this was how I discovered zoot 👍
And yet, here it is. And it works.
This is such an awesome version of this song - turned it right on it’s head - RIP Darryl Cotton.
I had no idea that he died. Thanks.
Classic Aussie Rock. That guitar riff is probably one of the first things an Aussie kid learns on their first guitar. That and Smoke on the Water
True
Great Australian band and song with Daryl Cotton on vocals,Rick Springfield,Beeb Burtles and Rick Brewer on drums.
I wholeheartedly agree with the previous comment. We’re not drawing comparisons here!! I love both versions as well ✅👌
Aussie Rock royalty here. Darryl Cotton, Beep Birtles, Rick Springfield (who must have a painting in his attic) and Rick Brewer
This is fantastic
This is Rick Springfield's arrangement of this famous Beatles track, as performed by Aussie band Zoot, circa 1970. Actually....this is a masterpiece arrangement for all the critics to absorb!! So see it and hear it for what it is! This version cannot be compared to the Beatles original, as it's a huge improvement!! RIP Darryl !!
Haha no, its not a huge improvement you can’t improve any song from the Beatles as they are already perfect
I am a huge Beatles fan and I agree this cover is a masterpiece.
This version is full of energy and excitement, a different take on a familiar song that's all there is to it ; fine by me1.
Awesome version!!!
It's a Great Cover, doesn't matter whether it's better than the original, a totally different version and it still sounds good.....
Interesting version.... Springfield has always been an enigma
Great version......loved this when I was a kid.
Really dig this arrangement and that guitar riff has some serious swagger 🎸
Very heavy for a song from 1970
@@mike04574 thats where Heavy came from. Did you think music got heavy in the 80? If you see what i mean. That's when music perished
@@Deejaay83urj38 nope it got heavy with bands like black sabbath and deep purple in the late 60s and early 70s. This song included too. never mentioned the 80s
Exactly right. The guitar riff is the key ingredient to this song.
Hard to believe the guitar player is none other than Rick Springfield
Ignore the title. Its comparing apples with oranges, but this version is absolutely inspired. Fantastic. But Doug Parkinson's cover of Dear Prudence in 1969 is phenomenal - the best studio recorded Beatles cover ever.
An amazing, very original version. Love it !!!!
Pre-Metallica in 1970 if you ask me.
Better than Metallica. Heavier and much more raw
This is fantastic! Rick Springfield you are a rock star!!
Always went to TC's to see Zoot loved Darrel Cotton in Pink Beeb , Saturday mornings , great stuff Brisbane!
Why Brisbane? Zoot were an Adelaide band.
They were Spanish
Back in 1969 Zoot performed in the School Hall at Thornbury High School and it has left a lasting memory for those attending. Seen them Master Apprentices, Aztecs and many of the other bands of the time around Melbourne venues.
GOLD who still listening in 2019 ?
2020 mate
@@troymcmahon3470 And beyond no doubt!!
@@troymcmahon3470 yes mate. With headphones casting to tv at night. Damn pearler. Just finished masters apprentices set and now this.
This my first time hearing this version, I love it, if i had to pick out of the 2 versions, this one wins for me hands down.
When you say a cover of a song as legendary as 'Eleanor Rigby' is better than the original, you have some big shoes to fill. This version doesn't quite do that, but it has enough style to hold its own as being among the better (if not more outlandish) covers.
My fav cover....ruclips.net/video/JS--6mzw3eo/видео.html
Ray Charles takes a good whack at it
This version blows the Beatle's version off this planet!
Its one of the best songs in rock. Zoit can stand internationally
Great cover. Way to own it!
This is such a kick arse version of this song! Such a great twist on the original - (which I love by the way) - really clever & Zoot made it their own! 😁
As the Beatles said, this is the best recording of this track they have heard including theirs.
So "The Beatles" said that as one person? Send me this quote. No-one ever said that.
Lol - What a crock of shit.
@Darth Revan Who wrote what in the right way?
i dont think so....the beatles are much better
@KILLING⚡HEROS That's where you are mistaken
The harmonies and paul's unique voice are what stand out in the original. Truly a piece of art
@KILLING⚡HEROS Agree.
Ones a piece of art. The other just some strumming guitars. Wow. That's so woke!
The beetles version is totally shit slow and bouncy.
Let's get one thing straight,, Australians' know how to rock,,,don't say a silly thing like its better than the Beatles, just listen
ZOOT in concert - November 2020 - check ZOOT facebook page for info or Ticketmaster!
I was 12 years old when I first heard this late at night with my radio playing when I was supposed to be asleep. I thought it was better than the Beatles version then (and I love the Beatles - best group ever, bar none) and 1/2 century later I still think the same way.
Great Australin band all went on to become famous in there own right
