How to program key fobs WITH ONLY ONE KEY for a MK4 VW GTI, Jetta, passat, or Beetle

  • Tutorial on programming extra or spare key fobs for the MK4 generation VWs. This particular car is a 2002 VR6 GTI. It will likely work with others, you just have to try.
    I DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE IF IT WILL WORK WITH YOUR PARTICULAR YEAR OR MODEL. Please don't ask.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial. The way I used a screwdriver as a key and got that place worked perfectly on my 2002 Jetta GLS. But the programming itself didn't work on the way you showed. I went VW's website and found an instruction to program the key fob. Instead of holding the key on the door for 10 seconds I locked and unlocked, then pressed the unlock key(the car honked) and that was it.
    So guys! If it doesn't work on your vehicle try other methods. I'm super glad I fixed my key fob thanks to the author. It was way easy to remove that part from the door and fix it. Thanks!

    THIS WORKED! my other car was sat in the garage for months as my key barrels were all seized and screwed and the mechanic (my long time friend and neighbour) genuinely thought the only way to get it fixed was to change all the locks and keys and get them reprogrammed which would be £££s! this took all of 10 seconds!!!!

    Great tutorial! This also works with only one key fob in the ignition lock, ie. if you have no valet key and are replacing the fob part on your only key. Mine didn't honk when turning the screwdriver, it honked after I had pressed the new fob in the ignition lock a few seconds. I pressed one of the buttons a second time after it honked, and it works now.

    • @Phatphatyo
      @Phatphatyo  2 года назад

      Awesome. Glad it helped. A couple other people said the same thing- that it didn’t honk right away but did with the press of the button. Weird, but as long as it programs. 👍🏼

    Excellent tutorial! My wife's 2k Beetle (UK) has only one key, so got a fob from ebay. My problem is the driver's door has a dodgy solder joint on lock, so I tried it passenger side and it works!! Mine chirped after pressing the new fob the 2nd time. Thanks again, very helpful

    Good tutorial! Note: you don't need to pry that lock with a screwdriver jusr use your key in the lock and gently wiggle it out then pry it to spare the paint on the door. And please remember folks not all key fobs teachable to the car. It depends what type of part number the key has. It has to match with the car's comfort module.

    • @Phatphatyo
      @Phatphatyo  6 лет назад +2

    VW Golf 4 1.9 TDI 1999 doors5. The way it WORKED for me is like this: I have 2 keys, for X reason both of them stopped working, i bought new batteries but didn't work , i tried many methods to reprogram but didn't work, and at the last moment i found out that My drivers side door didn't open all doors when i use the key, but the opposite door of driver whenever i try to unlock it activated my 6 car signals(and opened all doors) same like the key fobs, so i closed THAT door with key and kept the key turned closed, and i click the Open button on the other key and the door immediately tried to OPEN, than i did the same with other key by swapping them, try this it worked so easy for me and i thought this might help cause i waste whole day trying to find the solution.
    I don't know if it works with just one key because i already made them work try but by keeping the key turn closed and by clicking the button on that same key might do the trick. Good luck :)

    This is not working on my mk4 golf .. Idk if it is because my new fob is used and programmed to another car.. Or because the fob isn't compatable? Because there is 3 diffrent fobs there the one with the metal blue and white logo which is the old one.. There is the 2 newer ones that have the black and silver plastic logo.. But from those 2 the first version still comes apart easy like the old fob and the 2nd version is hard to take apart because it has locking pins and that's the one I have?????

    Both switches of the electric lock system on the driver's door are broken, they make the "click" sound but nothing happenes so ironically, I can't enter the programming mode.
    Both keys needs to be Programmed, but before that I need to replace the switches (hopefully not the lock itself), I can still close all door on the back. But, yeah, TY for the tutorial tho

      I may have spoke too soon - I assumed it would work - gave it a try... followed directions exactly. No joy. Does this indicate that maybe the battery is not making a good connection? I tested the battery with a volt meter and it's 3+ volts. My car has never been able to lock the driver's door with the key fob. I used vag com to program my fob to roll all 4 windows up/down. I had to get out of car, roll windows down and hit the door lock rocker switch by reaching inside the car... then use my fob to roll up windows. I've lived with this for many years and has been fine. My key fob just stopped working yesterday and I bought new battery tonight... watched your video and thought I would solve my problem... any ideas?

      zvkeria yeah it would have. I didn’t, no. I left the key in the ignition. Ha. I looked into doing it. The fob would have still remembered the electronic part that does the locks. Mr Rees yeah unless the button went bad- this video shows you how. Except you’ll want to program the same fob instead of a different one. I’d unlock works but lock doesn’t you may have a problem with the fob itself. Give it a shot. Only takes 5 min but if it doesn’t work then it will tell you that it’s the fob that’s bad. You can always buy another and just swap the blades out.

      You should still have the “on” key stop in your ignition. When the key goes in it’s “off”. One click is accessory, the next is “on”, and the next is start. There should be 4 positions. You want the third.
      As for starting without the clutch, I’m actually a little jealous of that. That’s cool. But I don’t think it should affect programming a fob, but I don’t know for sure. I just wouldn’t think it would stop it from doing it.

      Random thought- the 2002 in the video locked me out once. I totally forgot. I had the battery off and then couldn’t start it and thought it was a chip thing and it turned out to be APR tuned. APR usually has a passcode to unlock it if it ever loses power. If you don’t set a code (most don’t) it’s 1234 but each style of cruise control is different. That’s how you enter the code. There are so many tuned gtis out there and APR does most of them. Give that a shot?? Look up how to enter APR password into mk4 or whatever you have and find the instructions for your style of cruise control arm and see if it’s got a lock on it. Worst case is you just sit and turn cruise on and off in your driveway.

    would this work without removing the lock if you had two keys for the car but no working fob?

    • @Phatphatyo

      Yeah it would. That’s the normal process actually. This was just a one-off situation where I didn’t so the screwdriver was my “key”. That would work perfect.

    How did you know which fccid works on your car?
    Or which remote model works?

      You’d have to either have one to look at, google it and hope it’s right, or ask a dealer I would think.

    Hi, I have tried this on my car & it did not work, the turn signals did not flash either, what would you suggest i do next? Kind Regards Derek.

      I’ve heard a couple of people say that they turned the key several times before it worked. Not sure how that helps but I don’t have any other solutions. It works for so many years and so many different models. It’s weird that it wouldn’t work. Be sure the key is on. Not running but on. (Turn 2 clicks. Past acc to “on”)

      @@derekfinch488 that light is the security light. It flashes when it is armed and stops when disarmed. It doesn’t flash simply based on lock status. It’s the cars security system that flashes it

    I have a big question for you please help and answer offcourse :D
    I have central locking for my Golf 4 '00 and i have that small key that you had before. But i think i dont have an remote control lock/unlock. But i have central, does this mean if i do the coding with a regular that i have to the new one( just like yours that flips the key) i will have the remote control lock/unlock sistem?

    • @nikolapeky
      @nikolapeky 8 лет назад

      i found out, you cant do that if you didnt have it installed before. for me in croatia it will cost about 700kn(approx-102$ or 94€)
      Its a 3 step procedure for me,probably everyone else if you folow this.
      1. by an keyles entery(remotecontrol) from ebay,aliexpress.( 150kn, 21$,20€) ( it will have 2 keys,those new ones with flip keys.)
      2. give the module to someone to install it(possibly to someon who knows how to do that(how much money he will take for the install it depends, for me its 200kn(30$,27€)))
      3. take the keys that you just installed to the key master and he will ingrave the markings for the key(steel part) to fit in the lock( how you turn the car) and also he will need to code the original key with this new one so you can turn on the car.(350kn,(51$,47€)
      hope it helps :D

      i think you have to have some box in the engine bay, probably which is the module for the keyless entery.but it is the best for you to go to the specialist he will tell you everything yo need to know

      nikolapeky you can't just have Central. You have to also have a car with the ability to have wireless key fob capability. A good rule of thumb is if the car came with it but someone lost it down the line, you should be good but if it didn't originally come with it you're not able to program it.

    Do u know if this procedure works also for Seat Ibiza (6L)...?

    • @Phatphatyo
      @Phatphatyo  2 года назад

      I’m not sure. Unless someone else comments. It has surprisingly worked on many other years and models but I don’t know if it does or not. If you find the manual you can check the procedure to see if it requires a key in the ignition and a key in the door. If it does then this will work. If it is different then it won’t work. Sorry I’m not more helpful than that.
