In Episode 4 of MUNCHIES Guide to Oaxaca, host Daniel Hernández heads to Juchitán, Oaxaca, on the Isthmus region of southeastern Mexico. People speak the Zapotec language in Juchitán and enjoy foods-such as iguana, armadillo, and turtle eggs-that are unique to the region. These dishes are prized as customs that locals say go back to before the arrival of the Europeans, even though they involve federally protected species in Mexico. Daniel's guide in Juchitán is Palo, a skilled local cook and muxe (pronounced MOO-sheh). Muxes are a special social group considered a "third gender" in Oaxaca's isthmus.

You can't get any more authentic than getting cooked for by a Muxe. She was really sweet and inviting too.
Bro that was a man
@@jameswarren4107 don’t you mean both?
How is that more authentic than getting cook for by anyone else
Palo seemed to have a really nice chill energy about her..
HER !?!?!???!? bro that had to be a man !?’
@@jameswarren4107 why are you watching if it bothers you?
I love all your videos. You're just so humble and just make me happy watching you explore our culture while being kind to our people. Keep up the good work! May god bless you with good health so you can keep doing this.
Loved the host he just seems so chill !! And palo was so lovely and welcoming to the host 😊
mexico seems like a cool place, i'd like to be a tourist there for a month instead of wasting all my money within a week in the usa
Thats why americans come to mexico on spring brake
Mexico is amazing
Come to Guadalajara. It's a modern city a stone's throw away from little pueblos like the one in the video.
ddas adfassaf we may have a great culture, the people and food is great, but we lack of security and the government sucks, it is very corrupt

They should feature Palo in more episodes! She seems like a very good cook and sweetheart.
+Wendy P. it was a he. just because it likes to refer to itself as her, doesn't change the fact that he was born with a dick and balls
+penny wiser well I consider her/he as a woman since she wants to be considered a woman. Do you have a problem?
its just inaccurate. i could want to be a bird but that doesn't change the fact that i am a human.
+penny wiser That's true.
+Jessica Ni Perhaps, but in common speech, gender and sex are considered one and the same, or when someone talks about gender, they're actually referring to sex - so when they say he/she, they're referring to the presence of male or female sexual organs. The word woman can be used as both sex and/or gender. So technically, the Palo would be a "male woman," or referred to as a man in common speech.
viva la mexico!!! I want to try everything.Brilliant
Best show VICE has done since Thumbs Up. Host is awesome.
Agreed and they need to bring thumbs up back
This is fantastic! Such a good showing of food intertwined with culture!
Danny you rock man! Im from Oaxaca. nice munchies serie.
I am really liking Daniel's style & nature.. good host, great series//
Iguana is rich in Vitamins and protein if your lost in the woods you can survive just by eating fresh iguana they are good
This is a wonderful series!! Please please do more!!!
You guys should definitely hit up Minillas, Jalisco population 1,000. And during Christmas 1,250
I actually tried iguana when I visited my family in Mexico, but they tricked me they said it was chicken soup and later on they revealed to me it was iguana. It tasted a lot like chicken pretty good, but I wouldn't have it again! Supposedly iguana is good for you, you don't get sick. & I hardly get sick from a cold, etc. They also made tea with the iguanas blood.
Really want to visit Oaxaca after watching this, the host is amazing too
more videos with this journalist! having a spanish speaker in mexico makes the chemistry with the locals better then a non-spanish speaker i think.
I Love Paola ! I hope she gets a cooking show. At east on RUclips.
+Mr. OooGa BooGa it was a he. just because it likes to refer to itself as her, doesn't change the fact that he was born with a dick and balls
+penny wiser seems that the subject is really important to you, you already made the comment twice who the fuck cares??
you obviously, since you replied.

(I'm a native of the city of Juchitan de Zaragoza Oaxaca!
Do not you tried such famous Tlayudas? That personally is the best ...)
I personally think is the best*
i like this host,.daniel hernandez. he is so sweet,.:)
This show is the shit. I can not get enough.
Thanks for sharing!
I love how third/second world countries have some of the best damn foods for such a low price. You can go to paris and go to some expensive ass restaurant that serves you a pea and expect you to pay 50 dollars for it.
419chris419 Those are either tourist traps or upscale restaurants. You can have full, quality meals with wine for about $10-15 in places like France/Spain/Protugal
Awesome host and great episode!!
Buenisima la serie!! Gracias
At the very end, was Paola speaking a local language? To my Gringo ears and moderate knowledge of Spanish, it didnt sound like it.
You are right, at the end Palo was not speaking Spanish, was speaking a Zapotec dialect.
But it is not a dialect, it is a language... sí es una lengua en sí misma Ale, una lengua indígena con sus propias reglas.
the best nicr munchies series !!!
this videos are the best keep up the good work
I can tell Daniel's favorite NFL team is the Raiders. He's so excited they're moving to Las Vegas where the hispanic population is bigger than the group in Oakland! OH YEAH! He can't wait to visit NV to see the team play in their home stadium in the Strip!!! They're so glad to miss the land by the bay to move to the desert!!!!!!! OH YEAH! THE NEXT SEASON WILL CHANGE THEIR LIVES!!!!!!! YIPPITY DIPPITY DOO DAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Nisha is an Indian name. Plus you Mexicans also look like us Indians.
+Karan Bhatia Indians look like Mexicans. It may be an Indian name but the world is so diverse that a name doesn't belong to just Indians anymore. Americans, AA and Mexicans use that name too.
That was awesome
I swear if I ate any of that food I would have the most major rim sting I would ever have.
