I was a kid, but I remember this. My parents just laughed because it was so typically Brando. He was such a narcissist.

I asked my sister-in-law about it once (she’s from Mexico) and she told me it’s because of the bad history surrounding the Mayans and Aztecs. My dad was in the theater business & was pissed about this! I don’t think he ever watched the Oscar’s again. Before this, Oscar was up there with Christmas in our house!
I grew up to be in the film industry and can tell which are PR stunts and which arent- guess what- 99.99% of them are!
As far as I know, my family actually is native by blood, but regardless, thinking we are, we are pissed too (likely more-so). rich d-bag grifter high-profile 'native' people get all the fame and fortune playing the victim on behalf of 'their people', while the ACTUAL native population can't even get clean drinking water on the reservations, and whenever they want to protest their difficulties, they get shut down over hollywood ivory tower types whining that their scoop of caviar is 1g lighter than their neighbor's.

I actually lived down the road from his ex wife Colleen Dewhurst. As a kid we would trick or treat at their door on their ranch and she would invite us in to give us candy. Her husband would hide in a makeshift coffin and pretended to rise out like a vampire. She was a lovely person and always dressed up in costume for the holiday. Back then it was a narrow dirt road and there was like 5 families on the entire road lol, us included.

In fact, they only make the situation worse, by claiming to represent others, allowing the majority to think this is how all, 'natives', think/behave. He subsequently published a letter received from Littlefeather's lawyer, which asked him to clarify that Littlefeather was Native American, with a father who was "Yaqui and White Mountain Apache". The letter stated that Cruz was her married name and gave further details about her relationship with Brando.[131]

I have a kiddo that I adopted that is a member of 2 different tribes. Kiddo’s skin is as light as mine, but the hoops you have to jump through when tribes are involved are immense! There were horrible injustices that happened in the past with reservations and boarding schools-but the injustice that is happening right now to Native children is terrible in its own right. The likelihood that a child will be ripped away after literally YEARS of love and care because of someone’s skin color makes people who are interested in foster or adoption very wary. I had 2 Native kiddos for 9 months, then they were sent back to family. 3 months later I have them, plus another sibling back with me. No one knows how long, or what’s happening, and the uncertainty is awful for kiddos to live with. It’s racist to say that a native child cannot be cared for and loved by a white family , and yet that’s the position of many tribes and government officials.
What do you think about calling groups tribes instead of races ?
