    I have just recently discovered your channel and decided to go back to 5 years ago. As a musician drummer and guitarist I was fortunate to receive my grandfathers violin Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno…1736 with initials A ✝️ S….I have wanted this so much because he’s been the only other musician in the family and after my aunts passing 2 years ago I finally received it. Now I’m starting the process of reconditioning it back to some what a better condition that it’s currently in. So Edgar from time to time I will reach out to you for guidance. Thank you for reading my story.

      Very nice to read your story Mike!
      Watch out because violinmaking and the world of bowed string instruments is like an octopus 🐙. It captures you more and more even so you are not a violinist/violist/cellist or bassist!
      Watch out! There is more to discover!
      All the best from Cremona

      Does your Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis Faciebat Anno…1736 with initials A ✝ S say made in Germany etc as well, because you wouldn't be doing any work to it if it was actually made by Strad himself as they are worth an awful lot of money. I suspect yours is a copy made in the early 1900's (or maybe earlier).

    • @mickbrown815
      @mickbrown815 2 года назад +1

      @@rossthefiddler5890 yes sir it’s a copy my grandfather was born in 1900. I ended up touching up some of the wood work, putting on new hardware pegs, strings and redoing the actual case. At any rate I was very grateful that I received it.

    This is art it its finest. The creation happens within the artist first, and then it is offered to the world through his hands. There is a reason why there is no music when the young boy is applying the first touch. The viewers attention is drawn to the Essence of the Soul. The music comes later. Congratulations Edgar Russ.

    The first 355mm 1666 Stradivari Violins give us a hint of the fantasy of both performance and creation. Really nice work. If I were there dining at the Cremona restaurants I'd likely convert to manufacture between meals and courses. : ) Never enough is what good things should be like the fantasy of playing on new Stradivari and Guarneri " del " Gesu amodels I think as a violinist I dreamt of as a kid. Beautiful Creations Friend.

    Stradivari had no idea that some of his fiddles would some day sell for a small fortune. A violin is just pieces of spruce and maple (and ebony) glued together. But they have to be glued together the right way.

    The question that comes to mind, is how many artist's /perfectionist's like this have created such works of art, that were and are equal to Stradivari's creations. that went unnoticed? for some minor oversight in presence and time.? and is still out there in the world making music the same as the Strads that are still out there also. this equal among the giants. but unknown. That is what's so sad to me. I can only hope that some day the right ear, will recognize it's voice and give it the prominence it deserves. ECF

    I've often wondered if a violin's wood could be artificially aged before being put together. If you microwave organic matter it goes a bit soggy as it forces moisture out of the cells but when it dries after this it is very brittle. I would think this is what aging does to wood. If this could be applied at some stage to violin wood, would it sound better for it?

    • @mrgolftennisviolin

      redf I can’t speak for Mr. Russ, but check out “torrefied” wood. Some guitar makers use wood that has been processed in that way. I haven’t looked to see if violin makers also sometimes do. Fascinating stuff.

    Labels are sometimes fraudulently removed from valuable instruments and attached to the insides of less valuable instruments as a way of extorting more money from unsuspecting buyers.

    • @falakr2547
      @falakr2547 7 лет назад +1

      samet polat that interrupts the vibration of the wood. Also you can't brand it with and iron if it has been varnished. Also it would be a slick surface and the sounpost and baseplate would have trouble staying up

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  6 лет назад

      The protection is actually "only "against the acid of your skin. Since no-one touched the instrument inside three is no reason to apply additional weight in form of additional varnish, which would block your violins sound ability

    Edgar, what glue you apply and where it can be purchased (I mean the site)

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  7 лет назад

      Hi!
      It is Hot hide glue. I usually buy it at KremerPigmente from Germany or here in Cremona at Cremona Tools or at LAC Morassi. You should easily find it.
      I like the rabbit skin one ("Hasenhautleim") because it is strong elastic and light in color.
      Japanese Fish glue is too strong and too brittle.
      Have fun and all the best
      Edgar

      I was brought from America a rabbit glue, I refused it - it was very badly glued, I can not understand the reason

    Why is the violin varnished after the fingerboard - neck is attached, I would have thought the belly would have been varnished first

    • @adamm4064
      @adamm4064 7 лет назад

      Vincent Oliver In truth I don't know but my guess would have to be something to do with the glue, maybe it would remove the finish or the heat from it would damage it. When I first watched the video I had the same thought.

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  6 лет назад

      fingerboard and neck are not or better should not be varnished since it wouldn´t feel nice on your hand and fingers while playing. But even if it would be varnished after a few days of heavy practicing the varnish (what ever long lasting varnish it would be) would disappear anyhow.
      The wooden parts where you touch are usually treated only with furniture oil and that's it. That feels like silk once it is finished nice.
