I think this was the game that Phil Thompson was dropped for, and went to see Shanks the next day to ask why he'd been dropped. Shanks said "what? you should be thanking me for not making you play with that shower of shite, they're rubbish, they're all past it! you're the future son, you'll captain Liverpool and England someday". Thommo left the office feeling like a million dollars all pleased with himself. Haha, what a legend Shanks was.

I think that players like Radford were tossed to the wayside because of Sir Alf's over- insistence on the '66 players made it difficult for others to break in. Yet when that time came to bleed new talent it was too late. Despite the likes of Keegan, Francis etc. coming into vogue, it was a rough transitional period.

    • @peterh1353

England 1966 has three World Class players: Charlton, Moore and Banks. Others international class at best. By not having to qualify they had four years of resting on laurels and becoming too old and complacent. Even Charlton (at 32) was an old man come Mexico and couldn't do the full 90.
