I would add that a band leader who is respected and knows how to run an effective and efficient practice is priceless.
Rehearsals need to be planned, beginning with communications beforehand about what's to be achieved and distribution of any charts that will be needed.
Occasionally it's okay to bring a new song to a rehearsal if the idea is to brainstorm it, to develop it together, but if so that time needs to be planned for and everyone understand that's the objective for that session. But for the most part, rehearsal ought to be putting together prepared parts, fine tuning arrangements and making numbers gel.
Practice, for each musician to learn their parts, is an individual responsibility for each to take care of outside of rehearsal. Like, respect everyone's time and show up prepared. People who regularly fail to prepare are candidates for replacement.
Rehearsals that have no focus irritate the mess out of me especially these days!
And members showing up to rehearsal without having listened to, learned, or otherwise not having prepared is my peeve. That's what practice is for. Practice is what you do on your own in your own time. Rehearsal is making it work with the band.

Our worship team just started doing rehearsals and we go over 8 songs in a couple hours- 2 services worth. A lot better than going over songs the morning of the service 🙂
This happened to me this past Sunday. I EXTREMELY despise Sunday morning rehearsal
The worst rehearsals for me have been in church. Band members that get away with not learning the material.
This jives with what Rick Beato & others talk about. No one practices, at home alone, to learn songs cold. Making good music takes countless hours woodshedding. When you read about famous musicians, you generally learn that most of them have a terrific work ethic. Did you ever notice that every video clip of Jimi Hendrix… he’s got a guitar in his hands, even if he’s just sitting in a group of friends socializing. I once spent a few days in the studio with Todd Rundgren and Mickey Thomas- the sidemen were from Starship, the Tubes, and Tower of Power and all day, in between takes, all the sidemen were constantly noodling on there instruments. Unfortunately, as a society, we glamorize those few musicians with a reckless approach… but those are the ones who generally burn out. Prince, MJ, Steely Dan, Beyoncé, Taylor, you name it, they are all perfectionists who work work work at it.

This is timely. Mine is not in a band+songs context but a lot of this applies. I've been doing improvisational synth jams with another musician and we're really not making enough progress at getting interesting transitions going in order for the jams to tell a story. Our preparation needs to be like a standup comedian preparing for a heckle gig - rehearsing our ad-libs.

I like 'secret' face book page. I don't have time to talk to 6 people 4 times to agree on a rehearsal, or availability for a show. Organized rehearsal one or two cooks, Yep 4 or 5 new songs at most. Beginnings/endings. Three hours tops. the problem section that s what needs to be ironed. Vocal only is good. I Like the debrief concept,

Good tips! Just found your channel off this video. I would add, don’t be afraid to ask for help from your band mates if you are struggling with a part or transition. I think this tip fits within constructive critique but asking for help is difficult for some people.
I was invited to a rehearsal that played out just as you've said. No focus, no attention to detail, no communication, no one there except for the singer knew the material yet, she wanted to do a 2 minute run through of each song. I left. I later found out that the show did happen but the artist and manager skipped town without paying the musicians.
Once again today was rehearsal and the ones who said this day was best for them including our minister of music can't make it. But he has his own group rehearsal tomorrow. # Trying no to be discouraged
Thanks for this video. Its nice to get away from recording production now and then. How do you feel about running through all of the songs once before focusing so they all remain fresh in people's minds?
The band I was in was supposed to record some material for posterity. Then after a couple of years of working to that goal, we asked when to book recording. The guitarist suddenly decided that he refused to record unless we played gigs first. So then I tried to explain that we needed to rehearse the set, but he insisted that we know all the tracks already. I said that's not the same as practicing for a gig and he looked at me like I was crazy. I'm not crazy, he just doesnt know how to run a band properly. You don't just turn up to a gig and play some tracks in a random order with no thought for making the set flow - getting the right songs in the right order and making sure there are no long silences. I once played a gig with him where he took so long between songs I literally started half-shouting "Dude, play something for fucks sake!" I swear it was like 5 minutes of nothing happening on stage. I think he's too busy drinking in the attention of being the main man and he just forgets he actually needs to entertain people.

So true about having too many cooks. I don’t mind being the leader or part of the back up, but I cannot stand the confusion when the supposed band leader is late, totally all over the place etc and everyone is jumping in .. or when I’m organised band leader and then everyone still jumps in because of the culture of chaos that’s grown up in the church.
ive tried and failed to start many a band and the reason i stop is because i run out of patience waiting on people who cant remember shit. they dont now the material on a cerebral level, its a sequence of strings, frets and shapes and luck whether they actually repeat them in the right order more than once. you know for sure that the last time they looked at the material was at last weeks rehearsal. its tiresome trying to find people, and you wont know if it will work out until your third rehearsal. if its spent relearning the material after nailing it the week before then its time to stop and move on
Last band I was in they started practicing at 6 an finished around 11::00 that was in sane I'm doing that no more

My band members refuse to learn the material at home, then they only want to play the songs once or twice. They think its party time, too, drinking the whole time. Really awful.

So your choir does that too. How about the guy who was in the marching band but no choir who thinks he knows it all.
1. If they are expressing their view, recognize 1st that means they care about it. They may also be terrible at communication, arrogant, or just negative and picky - but at least they care enough to say something. If they are trying to help, reward and train the behavior you want.
2. You are there to serve, but you can't please everyone. It's right to consider and weight the concerns of the people you are leading.
But would it be reasonable for a McDonalds to go out of their way to make Creme Brule - just because a consumer asked for it?
3. Generally: Call up vs call out (some will call this "identity" vs accountability). People behave in relation to culture and expectation. Have you ever seen that children's ministry where the same kids misbehave with one leader but respect another? You are bucking an established non-serious culture. I would start with taking a few individuals that you think would get on the same page. Build relationship with them, then talk to them / inspire them by your vision, _then ask them to join_ as an active part of your team with the goal of creating that.
If you can get 2-3 people on board with getting serious, it will be much easier to change the culture. If you convert most of the team, them those that want to hold the group back start to stand out. Ultimately, the team will challenge them to get on board or leave. Even if you are the one who has to do that ultimatum, imagine the difference between what it is now vs when the team is actively feeling frustrated by being held back by that person.
4. (overlapping comments) it may be much easier to create a new culture, rather than renovate the existing culture. If you get those couple serious people on board, you can create a separate serious group. You can start with a song with only the serious people, then have the rest/old culture join for the second song on. This allows the serious group to excel. It also creates a distinction that the old culture, non-serious people see and have a desire to be a part of the serious group.
5. Realize negative feedback is communicated way more often that positive feedback. One thing that can help balance that is to actually ask people what they like. Not only does that make them feel respected and cared for, but it also encourages you and tells you what you should try to keep.
6. Make sure it isn't also you with a problem. It is good to do well. Is your goal to lead the congregation in worship?
Or is your goal to try to impress some person?
Is someone who can barely speak using what they have to praise God beautiful to you? Could you handle that, or would you need them to dress it up?
Do you need it to look like a megachurch _that is focused on image?_
Is the choir just really unserious about praising God? Or are they very genuine about praising God and completely unfocused on making a presentation? The 1st is hard to work with, the 2nd should respond to a call to doing our utmost to praise God - but will react negatively to you if they feel like you are looking to paste on a presentation.
An absolute boss way of cutting down rehearsal time is LEARN TO READ MUSIC!!! Easy!!
This doesnt apply to all especially for band. Not all music are writed down. For me best way is to hear it and reproduce it.
A lot of people can't read music so they have to go with the talent that they have and that is playing by ear 🎶🎶🎸🎹🎙️

About letting people give you critique I’ve had a non musicians tell me how to play or that I was off. How do I handle that?
I've been playing guitar for about 7 years our bass player 20. I try to tell him something nicely he gets offended. I'm not his boss but when he corrects me I take it and learn. Not everyone is easy to work with all the time.
Set the boundaries BEFORE rehearsal starts.
Hand them your instrument and ask them play it....

Rehearsal is for rehearsing what you already have learned. I hate it when people come to rehearsal and want to try to learn their parts or practice their parts on my time when I've already done my homework at home and learned everything and came prepared to rehearse not to learn.
