I just want to add a comment because someone commenting below said lead singer Charlie Wilson had died. As of February 8 2024 he is alive and well, having just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Jan 29, his 71st birthday. If you see this in the future, he and any of us could be gone, but as of right now he's still here for us to love and appreciate.
that person was probably referring to the fact that Gap band producer/writer Lonnie Simmons AND 2 of the Gap band Wilson brothers have passed away, leaving only Charlie.

'74 Just graduated highschool, all this great Funk music was everywhere. Ohio Players, Kool and the Gang, Parliament Funkadelics. James Brown and the JBs, There will never be another time like that, in my opinion. A suggested Funk song, " Slippery When Wet" by the Commadores.
Wow 74 Robert Wilson graduated from that year and THE GAP BAND made their debut in Tulsa Oklahoma on a very Amateur album called MAGICIAN'S HOLIDAY before Hit big time in 1977 coincidences are real
One of there biggest hits that went Platinum and was #1 on the charts and is one of the top 20 love songs and still in rotation is “YEARNING FOR YOUR LOVE”
This is your through GAP song, and there's so much more to go. You can do "Oops Up Side Your Head" or "Outstanding" or the legendary "Party Train". Any of these would be great to react to!
This takes me back to the early 80's and seeing my mom getting down in the living room to this song while she and I danced and cleaned. She passed away way too young and this song puts a smile on my face remembering her. Thank you for that Rob Squad. ❤❤
I remember asking the DJ to play the Gap band, then standing near the prettiest girl in the place. As soon as you heard the famous gap band sound effects, ask her to dance!
This is the JAM, I LOVE this song. It's funky as hell and still fire over forty years later, my favorite Gap Band song. Wish the two of you had gotten the chance to see them live, they were great in concert. Sadly, only Charlie Wilson, the lead singer, is still with us, both his brothers passed away.
You guys can't imagine how much I danced to this song in the '70s and '80s. In fact, I was a DJ, and Gap Band, Jimmy Bo Horne, and others were a must on the dancefloor. Greetings from Brazil
The GAP band were already popular when they released Gap Band III (technically their 5th album) in 1980. This song made them superstars. The core of the band were brother Robert, Ronnie, and Charlie Wilson. All three sang and played multiple instruments. Charlie was the primary lead singer and keyboardist. Robert and Ronnie typically had one lead or co-lead per album. Bassist Robert passed in 2010. Trumpeter/Keyboardist Ronnie died in 2021. As far as I know he live in Texas at the time of his passing. Charlie now in his early 70’s is still recording and touring to large crowds.
Please react to Outstanding and Yearning for Your Love both by The Gap Band! Charlie Wilson (Uncle Charlie) is the lead singer and is now a solo artist that has many songs out there for you both to check out like There Goes My Baby which was written for Snoop Dogg and his wife when they renewed their vows I know that you both enjoy it!
Lol! Jay looked like he was having a religious experience! Never seen him so animated and chair dance so hard. This song, and The GAP Band in general, should always be played REALLY LOUD to get the most out of the experience. Definitely a song that will get everyone on to the dance floor! Charlie Wilson is the lead singer and he is still performing as a solo artist, and sounding great!
The lead singer is Charlie Wilson and he is still going strong and releasing solo music. Affectionately nickname "Uncle Charlie". Saw him in concert recently and he was still awesome.
The lead singer is named Charlie Wilson, everyone calls him "Uncle Charlie" his last solo albums were put out in 2009 "There Goes My Baby" & 2010 "You are" He was really hot. Nominated for 13 Grammy Awards and 11 NAACP Awards.. The other 2 guys are his Brothers.. I believe one of his brothers just passed not too long ago.
Omg, my FAVE Gap Band song!!! Tried REALLY hard to watch, but literally could not sit still enough to watch without the screen bouncing around-- didn't stop me from watching, just made it kinda hard!!! Freakin' FIIIIIIIRE!!! 💃🔥🔥🔥
The 80’s had the best funk bands…Parliament (Flashlight), Lakeside (Fantastic Voyage), Morris Day and the Time (Jungle Love), Mother’s Finest (Baby Love) and many more! And yes, we tore it up and then tore it back down in the clubs to this music 😂. Fantastic Voyage by Lakeside & Jungle Love by MD & the Time should definitely be on y’all’s to-do list if you wanna move!
Love The Gap Band! So happy you reacted to Burn Rubber. "Party Train" is another good one. Would be great to hear it back-to-back with Heatwave's "The Groove Line."
The Gap band is my mother’s favorite. I remember her playing this and others growing up. I live in Louisiana and they came out here a few years ago and played a free show. I asked her if she’d ever seen them live. My mom never was one to go to concerts and such, so no. But, she was visibly excited to hear they’d be around. She is always the person making sure everyone else is taken care of but, doesn’t do a whole lot for herself. So we dragged her out to the show. Now, I know that this woman was once a teenager, it’s basic human biology. However, I had never met that teenager. But, when Charlie walked out on that stage…my mom disappeared and the screaming, dancing, fun loving teen came out! It was amazing! She sang and danced and screamed! The show was amazing! But, that’s one of my favorite memories now. So glad we didn’t let her stay home and she was too.
Greenwood Archer & Pine. YES! The Gap Band's music is timeless. This was the JAM at parties and at the club! Charlie Wilson just received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 29, 2024, (which was his 71st birthday). He still tours and sounds EXACTLY the same as he did in 1980 (44 years ago) when "Burn Rubber on Me" was released. At his concerts, he does perform some of the Gap Band hits..
I am a 53 year old refugee from the 70s, an 80s Rocker / thrashing headbanger, and grungy in my 20s ,. Currently been exploring everything. I have to thank you guys for trying out different genres or styles. I am sure I've heard the Gap somewhere but would have never listened to it. They got me boogying in my living room as my family was sleeping. I've never boogied before. I'm glad no one woke up and saw that. But it makes me want to bug out and seek out the Funk. Hey you want to hear some rocking funk check out the Red Hot Chili Peppers covering Stevie Wonder's " Higher Ground" it funking rocks!
This one never gets old, and I usually have to play it at least twice in a row. It's just one of the best songs from the time period, if not EVER. Such a groove. I loved both of your reactions to it. Play it again!!
Oh man this is taking me waaay back! Gap Band was the jam back then. If you haven’t already check out Party Train. Talk about wanting to get up and dance. 💃🏽🕺🏻 The official video is so cool. 😎 I think it was filmed I their old neighborhood, maybe?? 🤷🏽♀️ Edit: Ok, I think this was filmed in LA.
When this Masterpiece original came out I was in tears !!! I couldnt believe what I was hearing !!!! With Stevies 'Superstition ' Burn Rubber is one of the Greatest Soul Funk records EVER made !!!!! Genius !!!!! Still get a goosebumps everytime I play it !!!!!!
I can’t tell y’all how much joy I just got from watching this reaction. This grandma from Mississippi danced her butt off to this in high school- favorite song! Been waiting for hall to do this one! Love y’all!
Charlie Wilson did an interview years ago and he said he got the "burn rubber" idea from the movie "Smokey And The Bandit", because the line "put the pedal to the metal" was said in the movie. During the mid 1970s to early 1980s, car chase & CB radio trucker movies/TV shows were very popular (in the USA). You have "The Blues Brothers" on your other channel and that is one of the car chase films. The Gap Band usually wore cowboy outfits when a lot of funk bands of that era were wearing outer space costumes or in the case of Funkadelic, a diaper, lol.
Love the Gap Band!! The lead singer Charlie Wilson had a resurgence in his career later in his life as a solo artist. Often called Uncle Charlie because his new generation of fans were so much younger than him. Anyways. He is still singing today he still sounds amazing. I saw him live a few years ago and he can blow most male singers out if the water. Check out his solo "You Are" You will hear his true vocal talent.
Charlie Wilson the lead singer is still living. He sings solo now. Saw him this summer in Concert 2nd headline to New Edition. He was a power horse on stage. Uncle Charlie performed as if he was still in the 70s. Such a great performance .
Lead singer Charlie Wilson is still recording and performing nonstop with more #1 love songs as a solo artist. The group broke because they had the topical old school contract and had multiple gold/platinum albums and sold out shows. And no money at the end of tour because everyone above was eating
Like many of their Funk contemporaries, the Gap Band’s early music showed a strong influence by Parliament. Eventually, they developed a sound of their own based around the Bass synthesizer. For more funk check out: Parliament, Funkadelic, the Bar-Kay’s, Cameo, Lakeside, Brick and Zapp.
This song reminds me of my childhood. My mom would be in the kitchen with the radio on, just having her own personal dance party. And every time I’d walk through there she would grab me and make me dance with her. I’d be like, “no mom” and she would grab my hands and swing me around! I appreciate it so much more now. 😊
Yes ! This was my Jam back in 1980 ! Their style was a combination of Funk, and Rock. Could not have a Party in Brooklyn NY without their music. They roared thru the early 80s with this jam and others like You dropped a Bomb on Me, Party Train, Early in the Morning, Outstanding, Shake, and others. My 2nd favorite Funk Band next to Earth, Win#& Fire.
I grew up listening to these guys! This song in particular was sort of a theme song for me for a year or so, too (long story). They were the epitome of funk in the '70's & '80's - and yeah that bass was everything. I later on played in a few small bands & groups, and came to realize how unique this band was. They basically pioneered using instruments other than guitar and piano to carry the melody - in this case, the bass guitar not only carried the beat, but outlined the melody and drove the song. Much later in life while teaching at a high school, I met a family member of these guys, and ended up meeting Charlie Wilson, the youngest of the three brothers. Cool dude, and very kind (at least to me). Sadly, the two older brothers (Ronnie and Robert) have passed away. The band's music is alive and well, though, continuing to be sampled on songs and generally influencing a new generation of musicians today.
They were huge in the first part of the 80's. I remember dorm mates cranking this. They are unusual in that they are from Tulsa. They have done gigs with Leon Russell, the late legendary pianist who is also from Tulsa. There music was great for dancing and slow jams also. GAP stands for Greenwood, Archer, and Pine, the main streets in the African American district of Tulsa. This area was ground zero for the Tulsa riots of about 100 years ago.
Ya’ll are ABSOLUTELY right about this type of music and the freedom of dance it inspires. Man, I’ve added moves here and there, but I still dance the way the Gap Band moved me whenI was sixteen…and I’m 57!
The GAP Band! Greenwood, Archer and Pine streets. Tulsa Native, Leon Russell collaborated and helped produce The GAP Band at his recording studio in Tulsa, OK. Check out Leon Russell’s gigantic piano tomb stone at Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 51st and Memorial in Tulsa. I absolutely LOVE the GAP Band.
Wife here...My Dad's Favorite Party Band.., Sooo glad I grew up Jamming to these guys!!!..They are PURE 🔥!!!...The Energy is sooo Fun and Electric for sure!!!
Now we're talking!! Used to walk around a small cow town with a huge boom box jamming these badasses!! Got to see them live with my gorgeous girlfriend in the mid 90s and they tore it up!! That gorgeous Woman is now my Wife, we've been together now 28 years!! Thanks for the amazing memories you two! Bless you and your family 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼!!!
Two of the three brothers have passed away. Charlie Wilson had several solo hits in the early 2000s. He is still touring at the age of 69!!! He actually just finished up a big tour with New Edition.
Party Train, Early In The Morning & Oops Upside Your Head. I can’t remember which ones you guys have reacted to so whichever ones of those you haven’t done already should definitely be on you list!
I'm a child of the 70's/80's and anytime we heard the revving of the engine, we all made a bee line to the dance floor. That was back in the day when people actually went to dance clubs and engaged with others! lol. Love your reactions, true music lovers.
You're right about the dancing back then. Yes, there were specific dances we did, but there was also this kind of music that you felt in your soul, and you hurried to the dance floor to dance it out of your system. For a better example, check out "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey, the video with the Soul Train Dancers getting down.
Now you guys are cooking with gas ! Love the Gap band ! I got to see the Gap Band perform live at Madison square Garden at the Kiss Cares Concert with Isaac Hays as the MC and Barry White with Love Unlimited Orchestra ! Please do more reviews like this ! You got to cover the Gap Bands other songs …. Party Train and Beep A Freak ! You will love there music . Also there song Disrespect !
So glad that this was the music of my youth! Real entertaining without copying everyone else. If you close your eyes today, you don't know who you're listening to!
The Gap Band had many hits in the 70s and 80s, but their first major hit was a song called "Shake". It doesn't seem to get the respect it deserves, but it's one of those funk in a stick songs. I hope you get a chance to react to it.
Great reaction!! From Broken Arrow here. BTW its Greenwood, Archer, and Pine :) GAP Band was often cranked in our dorm at OSU back in the early 80's. Just can't sit still when these guys are killin it!!
Charlie Wilson, the lead singer, is still touring. His last album was released in 2017. Some of his singles from his solo career are: "I'm Blessed", "Charlie, Last Name, Wilson", "No Stoppin' Us", "You Are". You should react to some of these.
Yearning for Your Love, Shake, and Going in Circles are other Gap Band songs y'all should check out. Also, the lead singer Charlie Wilson also sings solo. Among his songs are There goes my Baby and Charlie, last name Wilson. Thanks again Rob Squad.
They were a powerhouse in the early eighties. Great part of my days on my twenties. My sister wrecked the car while we listening to early in the morning. Went off the road and into a cornfield in Pennsylvania. Couldn't even drive straight listening to them. Unfortunately two brothers are gone. Only the lead singer is still alive
Yessss, I am instantly transported to the toller rink!!! 🛼 I've grooved out of my head to this song my whole life, but now I can't stop thinking about how Dave Grohl ripped off the drums for Smells Like Teen Spirit off of this song!! He tells the story of it in this video (from Cradle to the Stage, and PHENOMENAL series of Dave Grohl and his beloved mom hanging out with other musicians and their moms!!!) I've watched this clip a million times, and it blows my mind and makes me smile SOOOO big every time!!! 🥰 ruclips.net/video/syLeLR9KdME/видео.html
Greenwood, ARCHER, & Pine! Not Aspen... is in BA.... Charlie Wilson - the lead singer is AKA "Uncle Charlie" is still alive. There are still members of their family that live in Tulsa.
The Gap Band had many dance songs. I hope you will come next with some Whispers " And the Beat Goes On" "Rock Steady" "Olivia Lost and Turned Out" or some Brick with "Dazz" or LTD with "Back in Love Again" Kool and the Gang with "Funky Stuff" and "Jungle Boogie" and the Dazz Band with "Let it Whip"
Rob I Used To Ride The Highway In My Big 1979 Lincoln Town Car With This Song Turned Up Loud Stareing Across That 7 Foot Long Hood In Front Of Me. Man What A Feeling. I Miss Those Days So Much
This was 🔥 back in the 80s I remember hearing this in North Carolina in the clubs had EVERYBODY on the floor just rockin till u were drenched in sweat!!!
Definitely "Party Train" by the GAP band. They toured with SOS band in 1984, saw them in concert together, by far the best concert I've ever been to. SOS band , "Take your time" is one to watch
"You Dropped A Bomb On Me." That's what plays in my head when I think of the Gap Band.
I worked as a DJ in a country bar, and we had to play that 3 times a night!
🛼 Skate rink for sure!!
Same here. Love that song.
Yes yes yes!!
That song is pure funk undiluted.
Love this song! It’s physically impossible not to move while listening. The funk, the soul, the vocals….🔥🔥🔥

I always thought it sounded like Burn Rubber On Me but couldn't say it was for sure. Thanks for the confirmation.

I was a 90s baby and my parents played this growing up. Brings back so many memories!! I may be a 90’s baby, but those 80s songs are my favorite!!!!!!
The lead sing is Charlie Wilson. He has a great solo career now. He's known in the community as Uncle Charlie
Check out Charlie's solo music. He still performs to this day. He's awesome!!
OMG. Haven’t heard that song in decades. Came out when I was a kid. Loved that song.
Love this. Played it back in the 80's during gymnastics practice! Got us moving!
Wife here...My Dad's Favorite Party Band.., Sooo glad I grew up Jamming to these guys!!!..They are PURE 🔥!!!...The Energy is sooo Fun and Electric for sure!!!
An iconic song back in the 80's. Brings back memories of college bar hopping.
Bought this "cassette tape" right before leaving for the Air Force in the late 80s. Wore that tape out!!! Best of the Gap Band is a great album.
Two of the three brothers have passed away. Charlie Wilson had several solo hits in the early 2000s. He is still touring at the age of 69!!! He actually just finished up a big tour with New Edition.
Can't get enough of that funky stuff - how can a song about being rejected be so joyful?!
Yessssss! Can’t wait to watch!LOVE the Gap Band and this is my favorite song of theirs- although I love many of their songs! 💜💙✨
Love this song. Danced my you-know-what off in the clubs back in the day!!!!
Gap Band - play "You Dropped a Bomb on Me"! Yes! It's one of those tunes that will stick in your head all day.
I grew up listening to all those groups Gap Band, Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire, all the Disco music. I came up with Everything.
One of the greatest songs ever. Charlie kills this in his live show
You're right about the dancing back then. Yes, there were specific dances we did, but there was also this kind of music that you felt in your soul, and you hurried to the dance floor to dance it out of your system. For a better example, check out "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey, the video with the Soul Train Dancers getting down.
My very 1st dance at 12yo in 1983 was to the Gap band and every DJ even today has the GAP band on their playlist
One of The Gap Bands biggest hits and most iconic songs is " Outstanding "...You both will love it.
Also us at NSU in Tahlequah back in the 80's.
@@Timoeltejano Heck Yeah!! Love The Quah!!
i am ro years 60 year old and you can't deny true dance music !
8track tapes in the console rocking the gap band. The original boys of funk.
These family groups are so special.Like the Isley Bros. and the Gap band.
“Party train” should definitely be the next song you do from The GAP Band
Charlie Wilson, the lead singer, is still touring. His last album was released in 2017. Some of his singles from his solo career are: "I'm Blessed", "Charlie, Last Name, Wilson", "No Stoppin' Us", "You Are". You should react to some of these.
Yearning for Your Love, Shake, and Going in Circles are other Gap Band songs y'all should check out. Also, the lead singer Charlie Wilson also sings solo. Among his songs are
There goes my Baby and Charlie, last name Wilson. Thanks again Rob Squad.
Uncle Charlie...that voice still is tearing it up! Keep it up Rob Squad!
Oh my gosh how I LOVE this band! My fav song in 9th grade! Still is a banger!!
We stayed on the dance 💃🏽 floor never gained weight 🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️❤️
Wow! I have the album (Gap Band III) this is on and just played it this morning. Great track.
This tune was guaranteed to fill the dance floor at Jacobs Ladder and on 15 Landsdown St (Boston area in the 70’s)
Greenwood, ARCHER, & Pine! Not Aspen... is in BA.... Charlie Wilson - the lead singer is AKA "Uncle Charlie" is still alive. There are still members of their family that live in Tulsa.
This is one of my favorite reactions of yours because you’re feeling this song the way you should be and I’m here for it
Gap Band are the masters of funk it's not a party without them!
Can you imagine being at the club and not dancing when the Gap band comes on.
We used to tear the dance floor up when this song came on. 🎶💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽🔥🔥🔥
So of them are still alive. Charlie Wilson, the lead singer, is still active today as a soloist. He's featured on a bunch of songs with Snoop as well.
