Pikes Peak Ascent, 13 miles of grit and glory up the side of a 14,000-foot mountain here in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Pikes Peak sits at the base of the front range just outside of Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. In today's running vlog I give you some ideas and tips for training for the Pikes Peak Ascent. I will be curious to read the comments for past veterans of the Pikes Peak Ascent race. The Pikes Peak Ascent course can be tricky to master, but I do believe this vlog will help outline some of the unique characteristics of the Pikes Peak Ascent course. And yes, I can't wait to toe the line for the Pikes Peak Ascent 2019 edition of this classic American high altitude running race.

So nice to see you really getting back out and up there! Mountain running vids should come with a "Trails on RUclips may be steeper then they appear" warning. That trail looks so beautiful, and on screen it doesn't look all that bad except the above treeline section that you can get a clear shot of how it snakes itself up the mountain. But the numbers tell a different story, I would probably need a full day and a picknick up that mountain!

I've done the ascent three times and I would really recommend it! Your advice is Right On Target. The first three or four miles are really tough so go easy at the beginning or you'll regret it later on.

I don’t know how long I’ve been watching the vids here but I really enjoy them here at 7am on the east coast... such an enjoyable way to start my happy birthday day! Better than nat geo! Turning 22 is awesome! Course this is like my 24th time turning 22 but thanks to running and quitting marbie lights I’m feeling great! Thank you Seth for the motivation and inspiration! Bless you all!

In 2017, I did the Ascent for the first time. Great experience. In 2018, I did the Pikes Peak Double. The Ascent was cut short this year for weather. I did better on the ascent portion of the Marathon. Key advice I have is to keep moving. Even if it's baby steps. Don't stop. It's hard to get moving again. And best advice is don't look up. Once you hit tree line, yes the views are amazing, but it does something mentally to you. Possibly the "I have to go all the way up there to finish" hitting you like a freight train. Smile and have fun people! Know that those last miles can take a long time. Throw pace out the window at that point. Some take 30-45 minutes to get through. Have a great time Seth!! Maybe I'll see you at the top if I get a chance to volunteer again.

Running the ascent this year. I’d kind of lost the love of running after a D1 collegiate track career but after a few years away from it and moving to Colorado Springs last fall these trails have reignited the fire. BTMR here in less than two weeks as a tune up. Enjoy all your videos. Keep up the good work!

Seth James DeMoor I was a sprints and LJ guy at Purdue. Definitely genetically fast twitch but really enjoying longer efforts in the mountains and seeing the aerobic gains keep rolling in. Goal is to dip under 3 at the ascent. Save some donuts for me at the top 👍

Super helpful!!! I loved the mile by mile updates, as far as the grades go and land marks to look for. Definitely taking lots of mental notes. I’ve done 16 14ers and have plans to do Pikes this week but running it is a different beast. I plan to run at least 70-80 percent of this race. I’m well adjusted to altitude but new to this kind of racing and I know what your body feels like at 12,000 plus feet. It can be brutal. Luckily I’m in Castle Rock so it’s right up the road.
Super pumped to be running this year! I’ve been dreaming about this run for a couple years now and we are only about a month out!!!!!!!

    Ascent
Team Jefferson’s man Zebulon attempted an ascent, though caught without the appropriate Salomon footware failed to reach the peak, settling for something smaller and more suitable to his Peg 36 Trails. If it was in Australia it may have been named Piker’s Peak. Peace out.

That handful of ground cover is called granite exfoliation, and an earlier start might avoid the quotidian Rocky mountain afternoon thunderstorm.
Anyway, thanks for that. I’m stuck here in Connecticut where the trail runs are more like swimming through heated, oxygenated moisture and mosquito squadrons. It all works though.

Live in Illinois at 565’ el. Have run the PPM 2017 and 2018. (Have to skip this year so ran PP ultra last weekend) . Fell 2017 on descent on that loose gravel you point out around 4.5 and took 7 stitches in left knee. 1. Be careful on the easy parts too 2. Bring your own drink mix - the Gatorade particularly above tree line AS was awful 🤪😂🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Would love to do the pikes peak but I live in the UK in a county that is predominately flood plains so it is basically sea level most of it. However there isn't any high vertical challenges in the UK apart from Ben nevis and snowdon. Both of which are too far to travel and run in a day, as the closest is 3 hours drive away. But in the future I will be running marathons/half marathons across the world so the more interesting the better. Love the vids keep it going.

Hey Seth, could you make a video on hydration during a run? Not shure if I want to put in all the money for a vest, or try to get my hands on a handheld (not easy to get in Norway).

    • @praisethesun9005
      @praisethesun9005 5 лет назад +1

A 10$ silicone nozzle water bottle with a buff wrapped around it to stick ur hand in makes a great handheld.
A vest is great if u need to carry more than one bottle water and a bunch of crap (food, warm clothes cause ur up in the mountains)
They also make waist belts for like 20-40 bucks.
Soft flasks are my preference for vests. They're worth the dough. I don't like the bladders. To me it makes my pack feel too big back there.
